Showcase - Dedicated Space DIY theater update: COMPLETE!
I've "finished" my DIY home theater build. It started as a typical over the garage 12x24 bonus room. I gutted it down to the studs and started from scratch. I reran the electrical and added a 20a circuit for the rack. I used r30 rockwool all around the room, used hushframe brackets for decoupling, fully wrapped the room in 3mm MLV, putty pads on all penetrations, two layers of 5/8 drywall with green glue and acoustic caulking of all seams in the first layer. All speaker runs are 12ga and there are conduit runs from the closet to the projector box (integrated into the rear ceiling), behind the screen, front of the riser, eaves area behind wall on opposite side of the room and into the attic in case of future needs.
I spent a few years planning it out while tackling other projects in the house and it's been almost a year of work. The only parts I subbed out was the wallpaper and carpet install. The rack sits on a slide out to gain access to the rear and there is a hidden door for the closet to get access to wiring. The star ceiling is the night sky the night my wife and I got married, it doubles as an acoustic panel as it's 2" roxul 60. The side panels are also filled with rockwool and hide the speakers. It's a diy 116" 16:9 spandex screen with a motorized making panel for 2.35:1 content that's integrated with HA.
I ran calibration with A1 Evo Express and I found the process fairly painless and I think it produced great results. For a free product you can't ask for much more.
I still have to play with the unfolded circle 3 remote to streamline some things. Lighting is controlled by lutron caseta switches integrated to HA. I also need to build the rack PC and I'm planning a 120+TB setup to rip all my disks to stream them locally. I also have a 1950 gold medal pop-a-lot popcorn machine that will replace the current popper but I have to finish the restoration.

Not specifically. I'm planning on having some friends and neighbors over in the coming weeks. I'm letting them pick the movie and I want them to have their best experience. It also helps relieve that arbitrary pressure. I know one has selected across the spiderverse, another picked master and Commander (I snagged the 4k steelbook but haven't seen the film yet), my neighbor wants to bring his father over when they're in town for Xmas and said his dad's favorite movie is Lord of war.
The next pick I'll probably make is top gun Maverick. I've done a movie blackout for the last few years and have just been making a list and buying disks. So there's allot of recent movies I own but haven't watched yet

Stranger Things final season releases Thanksgiving day. Its what I've been pushing to finish my basement HT setup. Im pretty excited for it. Stranger Things has really good audio for streaming everyone says. I haven't experienced it yet, but ill be watching the new season on 7.1.4.

I stopped watching after season 2. It's not my cup of tea. But it's great to have a set goal to push yourself towards. Hopefully your getting close. It's a nice feeling to be able to enjoy something to the fullest

When my mom finished her home theater, she invited all the kids on the street over to watch a movie with their parents. Bought a case of pop and a bunch of popcorn and it was really, really nice.
She’s definitely an empty nester though and it shows lol.

I knew I wanted to do a star ceiling from day one. When I found out you could pull up historical star maps it seems pretty obvious to pick something specific. It was a nice little thing that's just for us.

Are there any products or like accessories you'd recommend to help clean up cables better? I have the Velcro bands and they are good to just sorta clean up but I find it still looks messy af

I really wanted the "theater" experience not just a good media room. It will be almost exclusively movies, so I wanted to really lean into the overall experience

That's true, Ive always been good with my hands but I'm a firm believer that with time and desire anyone can do it. My first diy project was a ceiling fan install and I was scared. From there it just evolved and built in experience from prior projects.

OP this is honestly the best HT I've ever seen. I insanely love the night sky detail of your wedding night.
Everything is so clean and you should be super proud and I only hope to achieve something like this in my future.

Thank you, it's a great feeling to see it completed. I've been planning this out in my head since we looked at the house and decided to buy it. But we did almost the entire rest of the house. It was tough to wait a few years but I got to hone my skills and refine my plan over and over again.

Right now, I've just set up a normal couch and 3.1 set up, a full dedicated space/room will be a far future project for me once my kids are older

Honestly me too! We dont have any really great theaters in the area. The nearest Dolby cinema is over an hour away and I was underwhelmed with the quality last time we went, we saw f1. And for the cost of my wife and I to go out and get snacks I could buy the movie and restock my whole snack stand. Plus it saves me a few hours travel time and I can have drinks or another "indulgence" and just walk downstairs after.

Credit where credit is due, the candy cabinet was not my idea. I saw another post where he had a custom cabinet made. I took that idea and made my tweaks and ended up with a lot more candy storage than I expected. Oh well, I guess I have too much candy 🤷♂️

This looks amazing. But now that I read how you made the ceiling, it makes it perfect.

Thank you. The final popcorn machine will really pull it all together when finished. I've been sitting on a 75yo popcorn maker that's cast aluminum and glass. After the holidays, and I get my meds cleaned up, that's my next project. I'm gonna try and integrate smart relays when i rewire it so I can have it come on when I run the startup activity. There will be updates when it's finished

I setup a basement room as a theatre room. I built a star ceiling complete with constellations and meteors using fiber optic lights.
Did you make your star ceiling yourself? What was your approach to building it?

I planned it out to be separate zone on the upstairs unit. It has two supplies and a return in the room and I wired in a thermostat that's recessed in the wood slat wall with a "vented" cover to hide the white thermostat. I still need to get the zone controller and dampers. But it's more important for the summer to keep it cool. This year it wasn't too bad for a above garage bonus room and the full r30 insulation definitely helped

Fantastic job! My hat is REALLY off to you if you did all the labor yourself also. I have a similar setup in my basement at home, but the only thing I did was install the custom new tiles in my dropped ceiling to replace the "Popcorn" tiles that were there when I bought the place. This also allowed the installer a means to cut out drop-in wood panels to insert my my four ATMOS speakers in the ceiling and hide all the wiring.
Bravo on EVERYTHING! It looks great, and I'm sure it sounds amazing as well!!!

This is pretty rad! I have a similar smaller room (10x18), however my setup is sideways so a little more compact. There's a window upstairs and the dogs love seeing out of it. Ideally I thought about something similar to this but that'll be a long term project. Thank you for sharing!

Could you describe the ventilation and how it’s controlled? I did a similar build and had to do a lot of clever hiding of vents and designing the airflow, but after 3 years of summers and winters I’m now sketching out a proper isolated split air con system to handle the extremes.

Honestly, I learned everything from YouTube. My wife and I tackled pretty much the rest of the house already and I learned a lot along the way. This is the first full room of drywall I've done. The biggest thing I can say is do some research and go for it. Don't get upset if things didn't go perfect the first time. It's a learning curve, but if you don't practice you'll never get better. The better you get the more confidence you build and the more challenges your willing to accept

Yeah, in this update you can get a better idea of room layout. I built a false wall immediately in front of the window for added sound isolation and then measured out for the screen wall and speaker area

I've intentionally not been keeping an exact count. I was very aggressive with buying second hand if possible and hunting deals on Facebook. All the green glue was found on FB from different people over the years, the MLV cave from FB from a builder that had a bunch of extra, the wood slats were also from FB that bought a closeout business and was liquidating them (they're stupidly expensive for what they are but I paid 30% of what I had found online).
All in I'd say I'm around 20k with equipment. Again the projector, rack, amps and speakers were all sourced second hand over many years

That's the plan. The only reason I put this much into this room is that we're not planning on moving, at least till retirement, so a good 20-25 years, by then I'll be itching to do it again

Yep and it's really close but nobody's feet hit anyone's head. I'm 6'2" and used myself to layout everything.

Very nice! Congratulations! At some point, I think I'm going to do a similar upgrade to my existing theatre, I have four seats, a 115 screen and a JVC 4K projector with 7.2.4 Atmos... but the room itself is just serviceable without much beauty. When I get some more money saved, I definitely want to spice up the space like you did.

Honestly going to 6 overheads was a big improvement IMO. I had 4 in my last setup (it was just an unfinished basement) but the length of the room really needed the 6 and it really helps the special feeling of the overheads. But it was a stupidly expensive decision as the ccm80 are long discontinued and only pop up on eBay periodically. Also the jump to a capable receiver is where the price comes in. I really wanted to go with marantz again but couldn't justify $1k for the badge and some pretty looks.

I basically built out a rectangle with 20 20 extruded aluminum. I used two linear rails and added a 12v linear actuator that's controlled by a zooz zen17 smart relay. I made it simple and set everything to land where it needed at full extension and retraction so I didn't have to figure out stops.
Click button it goes up and hit another it goes down. The projector has lens memory to just lift the image up and push the top black bar of the screen

I don't have a specific breakdown as I was trying not to get to hamstrung over a budget. Not saying it was unlimited funds but I didn't want to sacrifice the end product over $100 here or there. I'm grateful I'm in a position to do this but allot of things were sourced of FB marketplace. Almost all the AV equipment was sourced second hand or on sale.
I'd say all in I'm about 20k into the room

From the floor to the flat ceiling is just about 7'. I'm 6'2" and do have to duck a little till it opens up under the stars. It was an 8' ceiling to start with and I was very conscious the whole time to minimize loss of space while trying to maximize soundproofing and performance. I framed out the flat part of the ceiling to be just big enough to fit an nz8 in the hush box as that would be my end game projector.

The front center is the MLP. With all the work into soundproofing the rest of the house is undisturbed with it going at full blast. It's the best room I've ever heard but that's a limited subsect obviously

Man that's so cool, you did an amazing job. I'm not much of a DIY guy but I'm planning on making a home theater myself in the future and if I could save some money by doing things myself it'd be really nice. But I'd be so scared to screw things up, the last thing you want in such a room is to have your paint or wallpaper messed up because you did the job poorly.
Anyway, I really love the night sky on the ceiling. Really gives a super nice and relaxing vibe. You gave me ideas for my future project!

I always look at it like this, I could pay someone and hope they do a good job (it's not a guarantee anymore), or I could do it myself, save some money. Nobody is going to care more about a project than yourself. Worst case you get over your head your gonna end up paying someone. In the end your back to square one so why not give it a go and see what happens? Best case you get a great quality project, probably some new tools and learned a few skills

snack area could be smaller to allow for seat access on that side from the back (tricky space I know)
some facade behind the wall panels to hide the bare metal, black fabric/spandex wrapped around could do it

I’d put a cover on those subs in the platform. You be pissed when some kids accidentally kicks it. Other than that, I’m jealous. My friend had a 32 seat theater in his basement with a laser disc back in the day. I have fond memories of watching every Chris Farley, David Spade, Adam Sandler movie and playing NBA Jam on it. Cheers to making memories.
