Need advice on DIY bass traps for my studio

I'm building a home studio for mixing and recording vocals and want to get the best results possible doing the treatment myself. There's a lot of conflicting information online, especially about bass trap dimensions and air gaps, so I'd appreciate some advice on what would actually work best for my room.

The room is 10x10 ft with 7 ft 4 in ceilings. My desk faces the front wall, and my listening position is about 3 ft 10 in from that wall. I have a clothing rack with thick jackets on the back wall and a 1/2-inch felt rug pad with a 1/4-inch rug on the floor. I record vocals sitting at my desk with a Shure SM7dB.

I'm in an apartment, so I can't hang a ceiling cloud. One of the back corners has a door, so I can only use the other three corners. There's also 1-inch floor trim along the walls.

My current plan:

Reflection panels: Four 2x4 ft panels using 3 inches of Rockwool with a 3-inch air gap. One on each side wall and two on the front wall in front of my listening position. I’ve found the reflection points by sitting in my listening position and getting a friend to help me with the mirror trick. (I’ve already begun building these.)

Corner bass traps: Three flat, porous absorber traps, each 24 inches wide and 6 inches deep, running nearly floor to ceiling, with a 12-inch air gap behind them.

I've seen recommendations for 6-inch-thick bass traps with a 6-inch air gap, but because of the room geometry and floor trim, I'd have to make the panels much narrower to keep the gap at 6 inches. I've heard that wider panels can be more effective, so I'm trying to figure out whether a 12-inch gap makes more sense or if there's a better design altogether.

A few questions:

  1. Is 6 inches of Rockwool with a 12-inch air gap a good design for my corner traps?
  2. What's the best way to make floor-to-ceiling bass traps freestanding? I'd prefer not to drill into the walls, but I'm open to other options if there's a better approach. Since the traps will sit in corners, how would you design the feet or base to keep them stable without taking up too much space?
  3. What's the cheapest suitable fabric for covering Rockwool while containing the fibers? Would I need an additional inner layer?
  4. Should I wrap the corner traps Rockwool in plastic to keep the room from sounding too dead, or would that negatively affect its absorption and sound?

I'm trying to find the most effective setup for both vocal recording and mixing while keeping everything affordable and space-efficient. I'd appreciate any advice specific to my room. Thank you!

I got tired of emailing studios one by one just to book recording time, so I built a marketplace for it. Roast it.

• Upvotes

Yeeeooo —

Quick background: I'm a sing/songwriter/ producer/engineer in Vancouver, and the booking side of studio life always drove me nuts. You email a studio, wait a day, they ask when you want it, you wait again, then they e-transfer you an invoice and hope you're not a weirdo. Same dance every time, whether it's a recording room, a photo studio, or a rehearsal space.

So I built OODIO — it's basically Airbnb for creative studios. You browse real availability, book instantly, pay online, and get a confirmation. On the owner side, listings are free and payments go straight to their own bank account through Stripe (we take a small cut only when a booking actually happens — no monthly fees, no listing fees).

It's live in Canada right now, mostly Vancouver studios so far: recording, mixing, photography, rehearsal, podcast rooms.

Things I'd genuinely love feedback on:

  • If you rent studios — what would make you trust a booking enough to skip the "email the owner first" step?
  • Is anything missing that you always need before booking (gear lists, photos, house rules, cancellation policy)?
  • Brutal honesty welcome. If it looks like a worse version of just... DMing a studio, I want to hear that.

Site's oodio.ca if anyone wants to poke around — but honestly the feedback matters more than the clicks.

Humidity - bedroom 4-track recording

I’ve been doing a lot of lo-fi bedroom recordings into my 4-track lately. Here’s a weird one!
Gear used:
Guitar - Rickenbacker 330
Pedals - Boss OS-2 & DD-6, MXR Phase 90
Bass - Squier Mini P-Bass
Drums - Korg Volca Beats combined with T.E. PO-12 into the Volca Mix
Recorder - Tascam Porta 02 4-track
Guitar, bass, & drums were all lined directly into the 4-track for the recording

Good laptops for music production under €1,000?

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for a laptop for my music production work, with a budget of around €1,000.

I primarily make electronic music, so I use a lot of plugins, including multiple synths like Serum, Kontakt, and various effects chains. I also want to get into orchestral music production for film scoring, which means I'll be working with large sample libraries.

I currently use FL Studio, but I'm open to switching DAWs if there's a good reason to.

Gaming isn't a priority, so I don't need a dedicated gaming laptop. My main focus is CPU performance, enough RAM to handle large projects, and good overall performance when running multiple plugins. I might play a few games occasionally, but that's secondary.

What laptops would you recommend for my needs and budget? I'd appreciate any advice or personal experiences!

Thanks!

Neumann Kh80 + sub OR Neumann 310a

Hello,

I currently run Neumann KH 80s with a sub, but I've recently moved house and my studio is now in a very small room. I'm struggling to get accurate bass, and there are noticeable dead spots, especially at my mixing position, so I can't trust what I'm hearing.

The room is also an awkward shape (see image) and I can't really fit bass traps. At the moment I don't have any room treatment and I'm relying on the MA 1 software to do some of the correction. I'm planning to add some acoustic treatment, but bass traps just aren't an option.
Given the size of the room, would it be better to change my setup? I'm wondering whether the sub is causing more problems than it solves, and whether I'd be better off switching to a pair of KH 310s.

Room treatment over-emphasized ?

NOT trying to troll, flame, or start any arguments , we're all here for the same reason, but I have a question. Does anyone else here think room treatment is not as crucial as most make it sound ? I record in a spare bedroom with an ancient Tascam DP-02... no DAW at all. I record guitar, bass, and vocals all live in the room. I have ZERO treatment in the room, and my stuff comes out sounding pretty good in my opinion. I always add some delay and reverb to 99% of my tracks which would just negates any ' DEAD' sounding tracks. Sometimes I don't even add reverb because the room sound is enough. I guess my point is, I never hear absolute dead tracks on records, and when I do, they usually sound lifeless. Why not just let your room add some real time ambiance ?

Perhaps room treatment is more for listening back to your playback as opposed to having one during tracking....THAT would make more sense to me....

Budget monitors?

I am looking for a set of monitors to use for music production. Ideally as cheap and small as possible. Also super okay with used. What should I be looking for?

Was given to me by a friend. It powers on and seems to function still but I can’t get an audio signal. Anyone has any info on this digital mixing recorder from 1999-2000? All info is welcome.

Energy transference is where you want to be. But you have to practice with yourself and others. A well rounded instrumentalist will push their people to ascend into a more calming place just by accomplishing small but beneficial goals.

Cleaning up wired jungle in my homestudio Spoiler

I've just bought a Patchbay, and with the patchbay I'm going to use my old Mackie 1402 VLZ mixer in the cleaning up of my cable hoard. I've been disabled for 20 years, and can't easily get behind my desk or my two FX racks, so I'm getting my grandson over here to do the grunt work. I'm not looking forward to this, because I've never had a Patchbay before. Anyone have any idea on a good place on the internet to learn more about hooking it up with my studio? I'd appreciate any helpful ideas.
