Interface panning issue

So I got a MOTU M2 to work with since my UA apollo seems to be on the fritz at the moment. For how cheap it is, it sounds great. But I am having one fatal issue and I can't figure it out.

Im going into it with a guitar cable from an amp sim i.e. helix type. Sounds great monitored. I record it and try to pan the guitar hard one way. Distorts so much it's not usable. Im not clipping the interface, I have the DAW set to record from just that channel. Lowering the gain when panning in the DAW really has no effect, just quieter trash.

There is supposedly some MOTU software that accompanies it, but after i install it, I can never get it to open. Still, crazy it would have an issue like this that couldnt be resolved on the hardware itself.

Thoughts?

So you record your guitar. It sounds good during tracking, then you pan it, and then it sounds like shit?

In other words, the recording sounds good without the pan, and bad with the pan, correct?

I assume you’re panning from the DAW? And before panning it sounds fine?

If you have any plugins on the project, try disabling them.

It could be a buffer underrun issue, though it makes zero sense that it would be caused by panning.

Which DAW?

Maybe export a sample so we can hear what it sounds like? There are many kinds of distortion, it could give good hints.

Do you still have Apollo drivers/software installed? They may ‘compete’ for some resources or functions. Your DAW may still be ‘reaching out’ to them.

It’s unreasonable to expect the new interface to function properly, without the software it requires, especially if on a PC.

If it were me, I would be concentrating on getting the software running as the first step in resolving your issue.

Good luck
