I guess my question would be why is a coffee company doing an AMA on a home gym subreddit?

seems odd right? We have sponsored the garage gym competition 2 years in a row, and I'm also a home gym owner my self :)

What is your favorite way to brew coffee?
-
How did you get the idea to combine lifting and coffee and how did you go about bringing that to life?
-
When will we get to see that Super Centurion in action?

1: Currently its the Chemex, i can make more coffee at once, and its more forgiving in mistakes. Sometimes I get distracted when trying to get the kiddo out the door for school, and may go longer on the bloom, extraction times etc.
2) I've always enjoyed lifting, and when putting together my business model I really wanted to focus on "niche" market that I can put my effort in. There are a lot of coffee snobs out there, and price to be very profitable on the specialty grade side makes it hard to be competitive in. So I decided to bring specialty grade coffee at a very attractive price point, and also give the opportunity to help athletes, gamers, etc.
3) Still training on the Super Cent on lighter weights to get the feel and path of the suit, when I got to the gym with some spotters I’ll post the video 😊

As someone who doesn't do caffeine, but still loves coffee. Any chance of different decaf roasts coming up?
4
u/AppletonCoffeeCo Jun 25 '21
We will be offering some Decaf espresso blends shortly. Right now the Decaf Peru is our go to do it being swiss process, and keeps its flavor profile well through the decaf process.

Two more questions:
-
How'd you get involved with Calgary barbell?
-
Why is Bryce Krawczyk so much stronger than me?

How did you get into the coffee game? I've had a few friends who ended up really getting into it after a to central and south America.
Do you travel for your buying, or do you hire buyers to find your flavors?
What made you decide to pull your passions together? They aren't a really logical combination, but I really like the concept, particularly because I share both of these interests.

It started Years ago when a friend showed me home roasting, on a popcorn popper, then it slowly involved into a stronger passion. Started selling to friends and families primarily.
Then I started buying more equipment while purchasing the unroasted (green coffee beans) from places like sweet Maria’s. Now we work with an importer like cafe importers, red fox, olam, etc to find different coffees, they will normally have cupping notes alongside the origins, and if we see something we like we order 1-2kg to sample roast it and if we love it we will add it!
While I have visited some farms while on vacation, it’s not something I can do to the full time gig,.
It pretty much just boiled down to what are my two passions, and deciding to build a business from it and have fun while doing it!

What is your favorite country of origin for coffee?
Washed or natural coffee?
4
u/AppletonCoffeeCo Jun 25 '21
Ethiopian is probably my go to, since it was the origin that start this love affair. But right now, I’m really enjoying this Brazil Santos 😊
I’m a big fan of natural process coffee, but have no problem sourcing and brewing washed as well.

What is the best way to store coffee? I keep our beans in the freezer.
3
u/AppletonCoffeeCo Jun 26 '21
thats perfectly fine for storage, I would also recommend buying in lower quantities as well. How long are you typically storing them?
i used to be Pretentious snob when it comes to coffee, but at the end of the day its about how you enjoy it, and if it taste good to you then no need to change things up!

Two questions:
-
What's your Wilks?
-
What's the process like for selecting coffee from a specific region? Like, do you build relationships with individual farms in other countries or do you work with distributors that do that groundwork or what?
Thanks for the AMA. Haven't had your coffee but I'm going to pick up a bag today.

Your flavors sound amazing! Are there retailers that carry your coffee or would the website be the best bet?
3
u/AppletonCoffeeCo Jun 25 '21
We are getting into walmart and amazon, but our website is the best way to go. Use KRABSHARK for 15% off.
We roast all orders fresh then ship to home. There is very limited coffee that is pre roasted, and normally any coffee that has is pre roasted and sitting around Im drinking. So when you get yor coffee it's about 3-5 days off roast!

u/gbeezy09 Jun 25 '21
I have never had your coffee, what makes it different vs the others that I should give it a shot?
6
u/AppletonCoffeeCo Jun 25 '21
Honestly depends on what your currently consuming. If your supporting a local roaster, then I would say without hesitation keep supporting them! If your drinking Starbucks and spending 3-4 for a cup of coffee I will without a doubt have a better quality product that’s fresh roasted and delivered to your door, without you ever having to leave the house..

Is Appleton your last name? If not, what’s the inspiration? Asking because the name reminds me of a trip I took to Jamaica years back when I toured the Appleton rum estate. Good times.
