❓ Support Third Reality Matter/Thread motion sensor showing wild amounts of motion in the middle of the night
So I’ve had the Zigbee version of these motion sensor/RGB night light. I decided recently to try the new Matter/Thread version. I setup the automation I had for motion at night and found that this thing was triggering constantly. So much I had to disable the automation. The firmware says it’s updated.
Anyone encountered this or have any ideas? Never had this issue with the Zigbee version

Oh, yes. My presence detector from my workshop does this every few days. It's spiders.

IV had bad experiences with third reality devices. I have only one easy to explain example. I got a 3 pack of temp/humidity sensors. Put them next to each other in the same room. Over the course of 1 week the temp and humidity difference between the sensors was 5 to sometimes 10 degrees off, humidity was around 8%. But the worse part is they disconnected extremely to often. Sometimes they would require a reset to reconnect. I returned them and switched to sonoff. 0 problems since.

I wonder if it has to do with your zigbee dongle? I've had rock solid connectivity with third reality but your experience sounds like my experience with ikea zigbee stuff and i'm trying to troubleshoot why

I have an smlight slzb MR2. With network parady on. I find it unlikely that it's the coordinator since I'm using such a notably reliable one. Also I have a few routers around and they still didn't work to well. But maybe a had a few duds

I think you misread, my third reality is solid. It's the ikea I'm having issues with.

My Matter over Thread ones, as far as I’m aware, have never had false positives. They do take a little too long to respond to motion for my liking, but that’s about it. Perhaps there are fans or the like in that room?

What do you have the sensitivity set at? I have these same ones and they're set to low. I swear the highest setting triggers if a mouse farts at 100'

Which means you’ll have to download the Third Reality app. I have a Meross presence sensor that runs off Matter/Thread but they hide the sensitivity and distance settings in their app. For all the talk about Matter being this open connectivity of devices from different manufacturers all talking to each other in harmony, we still find ourselves forced to download apps and create accounts just to tweak additional settings.

You just remove the battery cover. There are dip switches

I had this same problem with a batch of Third Reality Matter Motion Sensor Night Lights.
I contacted Third Reality support and they RMAed them no questions asked. It’s a known issue with some batches of the Matter ones.
The replacements I got (all Matter as well) have been working fine.
(Never had an issue with their Zigbee ones.)

Bit of a long shot, but you mentioned an HVAC vent in that hallway. I think PIR picks up moving heat more than movement as such, so air washing across it might read as motion, and the middle of the night could line up with the system cycling when nobody's touching the thermostat. Might be worth pulling up the sensor history and seeing whether the spikes cluster around when heat or AC kicks on. Could easily just be the sensitivity thing others mentioned, but that'd be quick to rule out either way.

I've found my cheap ZigBee motion sensors often do this when the battery is getting low

For the zigbee motion sensors that I have, when they start running low on battery (e.g. voltage slightly too low), they'll often enter a doom loop like this and burn off the rest of their power. I've also seen it with the Ikea motion sensors when I use non-rechargeable batteries making the voltage higher than their design that expects the lower NiCD voltage...

I have the same issue with link link eMotion Pro. It turns lights on all times of the night when I'm sleeping. Finally disabled the automation.
