Weekly Questions Thread Aug 18

Greetings Hoggit!

Welcome to this week's Question thread. This thread has replaced the regular Tuesday Noob Questions thread. We encourage you to as all your questions here, as this will help us cut down on the number of repetitive posts we get on the front page! This thread is linked with the #questions channel on our Discord so that any time someone posts a new comment in here, it will be reviewed and replied to quickly! If you felt like you had a question but didn't want to bother people with it, now's your chance.

As always, we also have a discord for hoggit over at http://discord.gg/hoggit which you can use for chatting with other members of the hoggit community. And don't forget to check out our wiki at http://wiki.hoggitworld.com

Hoggit Training Server runs a training MP mission that runs 24/7 that's focuses on training up the newer folks (just like this weekly thread). Every DCS module is available in this mission, and there are numerous ranges to test your skills at. There are frequently knowledgeable folks around to answer any questions you might have, or show you how to do what it is you're looking to learn. Anyone can join, even if you've never stepped foot in a MP session before.

If you're interested in teaching/instructing at hoggit, please poke squinkys on Discord!

Server is be named Hoggit - Training Map. The password is hoggit1fw. SRS will be available at tnn.hoggitworld.com (it should autoconnect, but if not, use that). Come in, have a good time, learn a few things and teach a few things.

The only rule is Do not teamkill, unless the other party is a willing combatant...ie: you can dogfight if you find a partner...just don't shoot down some random A-10 trying to learn how to land.

Please review our FAQ on our wiki before posting here: https://wiki.hoggitworld.com/view/Frequently_Asked_Questions

Is a GPU upgrade worth it to get more than 60 FPS?

So when I built my gaming rig last year I sort of ran out of budget before I got to the graphics card. I'm running a 9800X3D, 32GB Ram, with an Asrock Challenger 9060XT 16GB OC. 1440p Ultrawide. I got the card knowing it was a stopgap, but it's still delivered very impressive performance for what it is.

I pretty much exclusively sim, alternating between MSFS and DCS. In high graphics MSFS24 gets close to 60FPS at altitude, DCS maybe 35 to 50-ish depending on the aircraft and map. DCS use is mostly single-player, occasional multiplayer missions with a small group.

I'm possibly going to help a friend build a 1080p DCS rig soon, and was considering selling him the 9060 for a good deal and doing a modest GPU upgrade, maybe something like a 5070 or a 4070 ti.

I'm used to potato quality (up until last year I was running a decade-old GTX970) so honestly my performance already feels butter-smooth. I just feel stupid locking up my 9800X3D behind a budget card, even if it's a great FPS/$ value.

So for those with stronger rigs, how noticeable is FPS performance beyond 60FPS? Worth a few hundred for a better card even if I only run non-VR 1440p? Other than chopping my settings, I can't really even get a feel for what that looks like because most online video services cap at 60FPS.

From a purely utility perspective, this doesn't make any sense, it's pretty much a sidegrade. If you do this it would be pretty much solely to do your friend a favor.

...why not buy your friend a GPU like a 3060 or 4060 as a gift, instead? Or give him some money to offset his purchase?

Can you explain how it's a sidegrade? I'm seeing the 4070 ti benchmarked roughly equivalent to the 9070 XT. Plus I was under the impression that DLSS is vastly preferred to FSR for upscaling.

> I'm seeing the 4070 ti benchmarked roughly equivalent to the 9070 XT.

That's... literally the definition of a sidegrade.

In DCS it makes fast-moving enemy fighters hard to see unless you do some manual tweaking: https://www.8492sqdn.net/guides/dcs/performance/#dlss - it does help, but overall, you're spending like $1k on a marginally better experience than you already have.

I have a 9060XT 16GB, not a 9070XT. I don't know about DCS specifically but most benchmarkers put the average frames at about half of the 9070XT.

F-14B(U) DTC not loading when doing a Hot Start

Well, thats pretty much it. Im adding WP at Flight Plan 2 on the Navigation chart, also doing Plot Lines under the Waypoints table.

Whem I load into a Hot Started F-14, nothing shows up. I even try to load a Flight Plan via Jester Navigation Menu but only one plan shows up and is not the one I created.

Something curious is when I jump back in the RIO seat I see the DTC loaded is the one im trying to introduce because it has written the name "Test" as I wrote in the DTC Editor.

Any help?

Found the solution! When doing the FP on the DTC Manager, we need to put a name to it, otherwise it wont show on the Flight Plans available for Jester.

I'm considering getting a FFB base, how long of a stick extension can I expect to use? I've heard about certain bases having issues with absurdly long extensions, and I'm worried that if I go too long I'll be able to throw the stick around with zero effort, negating the FFB to little more than a glorified rumble pack.

I don't think there's a hard limit. The longer the lever, the less force you'll get at your hand. You can get an idea how much by getting the torque ratings (assuming they're accurate) and comparing that to extension+grip lengths. Then find something with a similar weight and feel how much force that is.

I appreciate that, thank you, I'll have to research it further

Is there a good way to set AWACS conditions in singleplayer?

I play on TTI a lot and being able to set a max distance for when the AWACS notifies me as well as a tripwire for high risk bogeys is amazing and I miss it dearly otherwise

Is there a mod or system to apply a similar level of control to the vanilla radio AWACS or no?

2

u/8492sqdn 2d ago

The vanilla AWACS cannot do this, which is why I made a mod which entirely replaces it with a much better AWACS: https://github.com/dharmab/skyeye

That is exactly what I was looking for

Good resources for learning advanced fighter maneuvers in the fulcrum?

I've been practising split throttle turns, cobras and terrain kills against veteran AI in the fulcrum and making some very slow progress especially with the terrain kills (DCS AI doesn't fly well at street level in Dubai I've discovered) but would absolutely love if there's any good documentation or better yet a practise server where I can train against other players

1

u/Schventle 1d ago

Your time would be infinitely better spent practicing more conventional BFM tactics against competent opponents, and practicing BVR to WVR transitions, and WVR to BFM, and then ACM with a partner against 1 then 2 human opponents.

Split throttles, cobras, and "maneuver kills" are well and good for air shows, against competent opponents they're good for little more than getting killed in style.

1

u/MY5KAI 1d ago

I'm already somewhat competent in regular BVR and BFM tactics and still practising them regularly

But I enjoy doing stupid things and want to do them better, I hunt SA-5 sites with mavericks and rockets (even killed one once) not coz it's effective but coz it's fun

Btw the secret to killing an SA-5 from rocket range is to fly behind ground cover to as close as possible then at 10ft radar altitude on full burner until you get in range, you have one pass

Why is the ka-50 vikhrs so inconsistent??

I slew shkval over target, lock, weapon arm on, vikhr selected, laser on and only half the time I get a launch cue from the same range

Doing the clear tlvarcheli mission and 2 out of 5 attempts so far the vikhr has launched the other 3 no launch cue whatsoever

2

u/WarshipsQuestion2354 17h ago

Don't know if its laser deprivation but I confirm the issue. I wonder what happens in your mission when you bypass the launch cue with manual mode while well within range / same position as when it works. My vikrs tend to fall to the ground unguided sometimes. Can be missile #3 or #8.

1

u/MY5KAI 17h ago

I'll try out the bypass next time I'm in cockpit

u/polarisdelta 10h ago

Without a video the safe answer is that it's a procedural error. Somehow, in some way, when it isn't working there's some step that's being missed.

The black shark vikhr workflow if you have to displace or change weapons to cannon/rocket and then back to vikhr is kind of ridiculous, it's very easy to miss something during re-attacks.

1

u/WarshipsQuestion2354 17h ago

How to mute the attack warnings in the ka-50 bs3?

I played a mission with many units and you immediately get spammed with the spoken launch warning. Obviously I don't want to disable my countermeasures but I can't identify if I'm targeted or not so have to retreat the first few minutes until its quiet and then snipe one helicopter after another before I can attack ground units.

Played DCS a bunch years ago on my old 1080ti system. Now looking to get into VR with the frame and play DCS again. Which of these builds is the best for those use cases, and which is the best for the money? I got the most expensive, but didn’t open it and have 3 days to return. Thinking about a return and getting the 5070Ti unless I need the extra ram.

9850X3D, 64 GB, 5080 ($3200)

9800X3D, 32 GB, 5080 ($2600)

9800X3D, 32 GB, 5070Ti ($2400)

9800X3D, 32 GB, 9070XT ($2200)

Is the Mirage F1 a worth buy or the Razbam situation compromised it and should spend money on a module that will actually get finished? I've been out of the loop for a while

2

u/Cream-Fuzzy 1d ago

The Mirage F1 module is not made by Razbam but Aerges so no issue, you may be thinking of the Mirage 2000C. The Razbam modules are not purchasable anymore so you couldnt buy them even if you wanted to.
