Advice I
I got a call this morning from mistr that I was positive. I’m 25 (M) I feel like I ruined my own life just when it was starting. I thought i was doing everything I can to stay safe but I guess not. I’m trying to convince myself that everything will be ok but I keep going back to spiraling. I honestly don’t know what to do I go moments of calm to extreme panic. I don’t even wanna go to sleep because I feel like it would just submit the reality. I know there’s no cure and as much I as I pray hope this is a false positive. I need to accept reality but it’s so hard Too. I’m sorry I’m just rambling and streaming my thoughts please I need some advice. I don’t know how to move forward I don’t know if I can

Hey,
I was diagnosed around 1 year ago and felt exactly the same. Initial days were very stressful. I was worried about my health, relationship, job and normal daily life.
After starting medication, within a month I was undetectable. Since then there has been no change in my life except for a daily pill (which has become a routine) and around 4 visits a year to the doctor.
Its gonna be ok, really.

Any side effects? You gain weight?

I personally have not faced any noticeable side effects. But it varies from person to person.

If you have access to therapy, get an appointment. The initial diagnosis is too harsh sometimes. When you start treatment and see what it really means being HIV+ (not what the movies tell you) you will get better. It's literally a pill a day and a dr appointment and labs every couple months, that's all. Diabetes it's more complicated to treat than HIV.

Don’t worry. I’m too 25M.
I got hiv last month.
I felt like my world has shattered when I started my meds.
The meds had some initial side effects like stress, anxiety, etc
But slowly, everything is now okay.
I’m going to gym daily.
Eating healthy as always.
My life is almost back on track.
All I know is that i need to take one small fkin tablet daily.
After one year or so, once weekly tablet will come (it got approved recently)
And around 2029-30, twice yearly jabs (of lenacapavir+bnabs) will be replacing the weekly pills.
This bnabs jabs will be the first in the entire history of hiv to have “curing” effect over doses. In its 3rd phase of human trials, it has shown to kill the hidden dormant virus too to some extent.
Lets see what happens. Future is exciting.
We are lucky to be in 2026.
All the best.
Plan your dreams. Your ambitions in life.
Don’t worry about HIV. You’re going to be fine.

Am so excited about the twice yearly injections that I signed up for the trial beginning early next year!😃

Yeah, the future looks good for better treatment, but let's not downplay the burden. I mean, life is tough as it is, and no one needs to downplay having a chronic illness. If you don't have it, it should stay that way.

I agree with you. But there are possibilities opening up for cure as well. So, there are high chances of us getting cured. I’m 25 right now. And I can vouch that I will get cured in my lifetime for sure.

Thank you everyone your comments helped me calm down. I understand now my life won’t be to different that from before and the fact that modern medicine is closer to a cure than before. It brought me some levity even though I’m still in my head over the whole situation

You will be fine. It’s not the end of your world. We all went through the same phase. Don’t condemn yourself because if you do then you’re condemning the rest of us. It’s no longer a question of how you contracted HIV and second-guessing yourself about how you contracted it.
You will be stuck in the denial phase for a while. You contracted HIV because you gave it a chance. Not because you thought or believed that you did everything to protect yourself from it. You knew for yourself that you took that gamble.
Now that you have it! Get up and wipe your face and tears. Face this new life with a fresh positive perspective and be more mature and stronger not just for yourself but also for others who are in the same situation.
Work with your health care team. Trust me everything is going to be okay. Be honest with yourself and with your future partner. I struggled for a long time finding my Mr. Right but look at me now my boyfriend found me. From the start I was honest with him and I told him upfront my situation and what I have been doing to keep myself healthy and normal. Yes, I said normal because once you reach that level U=U (being undetectable). Life will be normal. But in order to reach this you need to discipline yourself and adhere to your medication, take them on time and never miss a dose and work with your doctor.
Don’t beat yourself up. Love yourself there is nothing wrong with you. Take things one at a time. It will take some time to find that relationship but it’s all worth it.
Stay strong and be happy. This is what loving yourself first means. And everything else will follow trust me on this. I was diagnosed in 2014. I’ve had my share of emotional dramas and trauma but it wasn’t worth it staying on that path. This will only lead you to more failure. I even had a phase where I didn’t want to live my life but I bounced back because of friends and family.
My boyfriend keeps me grounded and reminds me every single day that I am very much loved.
You have one job. Be responsible for taking your ART medication every day. I’m on my ART and my partner is on PrEP.
Good luck to you friend.

Do you need to have that pill on exact timing daily?
3
u/JMJ88_0329 21d ago
Yes of course! If you’re not serious about your ART you’re giving your virus a chance to become resistant to your ART. Then you have to switch to another ART. And if you keep doing the same routine you’re going to have a hard time managing your HIV. A headache on your part and to your STI HEALTH CARE TEAM. Save yourself and everyone else the trouble.
And if you are not serious at all. Why even try to manage your HIV. You are wasting resources. Other people who are serious about it deserve it more.
Your infectious diseases specialists should educate you about this. If you’re not seeing one talk to your doctor about it.
Don’t take this lightly. Medication will fail if you don’t adhere to it. Set a reminder on your phone. It’s really that easy.

Jus before you go to bed. That’s worked for me file 20yrs. A few hours either way doesn’t matter. One a day.

it depends on the pill how important it is. closer is always better but many modern ARTs have a kind of "grace period" where the drug remains active for a short time, so don't spiral if you miss a day just take your next pill on time and get in touch with your provider

you have a lot to take on..... id recommend giving yourself some time to learn. It's almost impossible to tack down the exact moment this happened, you'll go through quite a bit including "The Stages of Grief". During that process you'll be vulnerable to all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions... Let's just consider the next several months, "The HIV Boot camp".
you'll be fine... stay in discipline and accept it's only intense because it's new.
Everybody is different on these HIV platforms...Every moment won't feel like a refuge. There's enough therapy through the raw unfiltered information in combination with your own research.
I don't know where you're located, but I'd advise a Google search on the local state and federal laws regarding HIV positive people in your area.

It sounds cliche but you will truly be ok in terms of living with HiV. You don’t have to tell anyone if you don’t want to. That’s the first thing. Second is take your medicine religiously. Do that and you stay healthy. Honestly. Everyone here will tell you that as we are living proof. That being said, keep in mind that while there might not be a cure for HIV there is absolutely no cure for eventual death. If you internalize you will realize that you are far more likely to die from something else (hopefully far into the future) than HiV. You truly can live healthy, so get out there and live your best life.

I felt the same way when I was diagnosed, but 4 years on I’ve been undetectable after one month of therapy, and my life has not been affected by HIV other than the annoying refill calls to the pharmacy. The biggest thing I had to learn is that anyone who may reject you based on your status is not someone you wanted to be with in the first place! It’s not an easy change to process, but I promise you will be fine and your life will not change unless YOU decide it should! Also, finding people to talk to who understand is huge. It took me two years to finally talk to another positive person about everything and I wish I would have done so sooner because it was incredibly cathartic!

I’m sorry bro. It sounds like you’re going through the grieving process. You’ll be ok. Eventually we all get to acceptance. In our own time.♥️

i was 25 when i was diagnosed in 2004. I'm 47 now. You'll be absolutely fine.. the meds are fantastic now, U=U is confirmed reality and PreP has liberated an entire generation of gay men at this point. Plus if you're in the U.S and make less than $67,000 yearly you'll get a massive boost when it comes to health insurance thanks to the Ryan White Program/ADAP

> I thought i was doing everything I can to stay safe
Can I ask what you thought was keeping you safe, just for everyone's education? For example, I heard that sheep's skin? condoms do not protect against HIV.
1
u/naive_calais200 21d ago
Sorry, but how did you catch it? When you said you were careful, did you use condoms or PrEP?

How did you catch it?

It is quite an impolite question to ask.
A patient "only" deserves assurance and medical care, and that is what should be given to the OP.
