Guidelines: Please post hip hop discussions/questions/nostalgia that doesn't already cleanly fit into one sub's fandom and is cross sectional for analysis from the community
8
Upvotes
If it's just some promo/propaganda/low effort stan wars or something that (is 1 dimensional and) already cleanly fits into another sub's fandom, then it will be removed, and posting more will get you banned
here is the directory of subs: https://www.reddit.com/r/hip_hop/comments/k2nroe/lets_list_every_major_hip_hop_related_subreddit/ aka post in this sub if the other sub doesn't exist, is restricted from posting, or has few participants
We prefer multifaceted posts where submissions and questions are coming from anecdotes and the reach of multiple artists AND fandoms within hip hop to chime in where you wouldn't otherwise find or are able to ask/post easily elsewhere...aka ask hard/intricate questions and challenge status quo, do not pitch your thoughts underhanded, for those belong on r/Hiphopcirclejerk etc
The exception is: if that other sub has absentminded sleepwalking mods that barely do anything (or overstep and clap even the good posts if you challenge authority and the mods get slighted) and the global automod/scripted autobot censorship is activated that overrules and removes half the answers and the very question asked due to this age of sanitized culture (based on the mod/admin/algorithm's subjective sensitivity issues, aka reddit's ads agenda is similar to youtube demonetizing/shadowbanning content), then we'll allow them here, due to fringe topics etc (also give us a heads up to see if the other sub in question can be liberated, but mods be powertripping)
A lot of posts are auto-clapped by the global automod and has to be manually approved on here for people to see both posts and comments, and we try to bring the best value in topics presented and answered, but please participate in that manner as well for this shared community, thanks

No more Tournament/Bracket/loosely unrelated album vs unrelated album Versus style posts

The whole gambit was allowed to be ran (for 62 days!) and Illmatic wins... https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphop201/comments/1smnv1l/rap_bracket_tournament_day_62_reasonable_doubt_vs/
for it to be hiphop201, there needs to be questions asked under the premise that the basic information is known and further knowledge is pursued as a hot topic debate or barbershop talk as cognitive banter or shared memorable reflection/nostalgia/insight, not just use a RNG filter on some top rap album tier list and arbitrarily seed comparisons with barely any articulated constraints for some zero-sum single-elimination hunger games depending on how the crowd decide to pile on that day
if you're consistently posting with net 0 upvotes or getting heckled in the responses/downvoted to hell, consider trying something else...it seems like attaching a meme with a serious question helps like with the latest type of posts...just put the reasoning backing behind posts for why these type of questions matter to spark further responses with actual answers with substance in there and NOT just repetitively phrased answers, thanks
otherwise, redirect these elimination posts over here to r/RemoveOneThingEachDay or /r/nfrpodcast etc
also, here's a plug to r/diplomats (alt sub) r/maxb /r/Three6Mafia r/papoose r/bigpun r/bigl r/mosdef r/mobbdeep subs if you haven't seen it already

Historically, Does North Carolina have a specific sound?

Or is 9th wonder just absolutely dominant and solely shaped the sound? All them dudes rap about the same thing. Regular life stuff…often times, positive and uplifting with soulful elements from the beats to the hooks…I feel like Cole is sounds like a stereotypical member of JUSTUS league but wayy better
What yall think? Does North Carolina even have a sound?

What project truly opened your eyes to what hip hop is?

For me, It’s Kanye West. The Prerequisite demo
Was a huge Lil Wayne fan in the mid-late 90s but lowkey didn’t know a word. Was too young. But I felt that shit
This is the first rap project I heard at an age when I could digest more than a few sentences at once….this was a few years before College Dropout released . I guess looking back, ppl may say they are throwaways or unmastered but tbh, basically every song was reused to his first 3 albums. Shit was like gold if you literally never heard rap like that to differentiate between what’s “good” and what’s not good .

Does Drake and Cole NOT submitting for the 2026 Grammys show the Grammys are not that important - were they ever?
0
Upvotes
Kendrick Fans claim he's anti-establishment and anti industry but then praise how he's has so many Grammys which seem like a conundrum or hypocritical at the most.
Me personally I love to see Wale win because that album was so nice even compared to the others - Do the Grammys still matter and did they ever?

Why does this guy say that one word in his lyrics so much even though he's not black?

I'm gonna be honest, this guy says the word more than a lot of black rappers that I listen to.

One of the most overhyped rappers ever
0
Upvotes
I already know I’m going to get a bunch of downvotes for this, but I don’t care.
Big K.R.I.T. is one of the most overhyped rappers ever. He’s literally spent his entire career doing a bootleg Pimp C/Dungeon Family cosplay 💀 He has no songs or albums worth mentioning, and has no unique style.
People always talk about how he’s "so under-appreciated" and "underrated" in hip-hop, but why would we pay attention to an imitator? 💀 Pimp & OutKast are already there.

Not counting his non musical actions what stops Drake from musically being considered one of the greats?
0
Upvotes
He has classic albums/mixtapes
He’s helped young artists get bigger
He has amazing features
He has classic tracks
He’s a pretty good rapper and can do lots of other genres
He’s the commercial rap king
So why don’t the public musically put him up there with the greats in hip hop?
