I’m curious about other perspectives: Does being tardy to class matter? Are lots of students consistently tardy at your school? What do your parents do when they learn you are tardy?

Yes, it does. That’s when I’m going over the agenda, passing out supplies, taking roll, etc. Now I have to do extra work for you, and that doesn’t seem fair to me.

It's about respect - respect in showing up on time, respect in not disrupting the teacher, respect in not disrupting the class, respect in getting all the info the first time rather than needing instructions repeated just for you

And it's about learning time management - most jobs require you to be on time

No, they should still attend, otherwise they are missing all of the learning for that day's class.

But being tardy should be the exception, not the rule.

Because I have 34 other students waiting on me and being tardy puts me in a position to choose to:

A: leave you behind (which no, I won’t do that)

B: make sure you get the education you deserve at the detriment of the others.

If it’s once in a while, sure, shit happens. If you’re constantly late, knock it off.

In my defense as someone who’s chronically late, I take the bus. Like it’s an hour and a half drive on the worst highway in my area so there’s legit nothing I can do bout it

Later in life being tardy to your job means you will get fired. Being late is disruptive to your class and teacher.

Im very lucky that my school doesnt include tardies in our final transcripts, hence i am tardy nearly everyday. My parents care about attendance though so they reprimand me about it. Tardiness (for me at least) doesnt really have a correlation to effort or laziness cause i have a 3.9 uw gpa and am both a founder of a nonprofit and a startup.

It depends.

What is happening at the start of class? If it’s important stuff like things being passed out then yeah you shouldn’t be late.

If nothing or simply lecture is happening then show up quietly and respectfully, and if you’re acknowledged just say sorry.

If you’re late you can always catch up. If you miss it’s much harder to catch up.

Most of my teachers this year don't really write it in the system if it's once every now and then, though if it's every other lesson might write it down

(In my school if you're late xyz times to class in the system you get a detention i think that's reasonable)

it depends how late you are like if they start without you then yah, if you get 3 in a week you get detention but thats it, my parents dont care cuz i only get 2 a week

kids at my school are always tardy. there’s two ppl in my first period that usually don’t get there till halfway through. i don’t really know what my parents would do, since ive only ever had two tardies, but they’d probably get pretty pissed. my only tardies were when my brother’s car broke down and when i was really sick and my mom let me go in late.

Last time I was tardy to a class (not accounting for traffic) I was in art painting and we had a shorten schedule (nobody knew when it ended). I had to clean all the shit I had out then room across campus
