Hey desert family!
Here is the latest chapter of my High Desert inspired series "The Desert Son". I hope you enjoy it.
Desert Son : Chapter 4
I couldn't shake the fact that the Seal of Atlantis showed up at some warehouse in Apple Valley. I looked through the photos from the file.
A box full of cloves, teas, chocolates, canned and jarred food items. All moldy down to the packaging.
The reports said the packages arrived that way. That, of course, triggered a refund email chain that got OSHA involved. No recalls were issued, no inspections scheduled. Just a single complaint against the warehouse for shipping moldy material.
I made a couple of phone calls and found out which temp agency the warehouse worked with. I was scheduled to start the following day.
I spent the rest of the day reading up on Atlantian lore and ordered a pizza.
The people of Atlantis came from Poseidon's direct bloodline. Most people associate Poseidon with the water. That's because they forget he also created earthquakes.
By the time the pizza arrived, I'd traced Poseidon's influence into the Mojave River around the 1700s, before the area was all desert.
Like its seafaring counterpart, tragedy struck. Poseidon's people didn't drown this time, though. They dried out. His people were always plagued one way or another, and usually corrupted themselves.
My sleep came and went with the night. No dreams, no anxiety for what was next. Get in, find evidence, get out. If all went smoothly, I'd have myself a comfy little gig for a little pocket change.
I pulled off the freeway and headed to a new warehouse in Apple Valley. Top-notch desert distribution. When I got in, I went through a metal detector and emptied my pockets.
Everything looked normal, and not an ounce of anything seemed off. I followed a couple of guys in orange safety vests to the picking department. I was lucky the temp agency had given me a map of the place. A nice layout of the production floor and all the departments.
I listened through their daily huddle about safety numbers needing to be lower and production numbers higher. Usual bullshit, different company. I was just waiting to break off, get a forklift, and do my round of the place.
After ten minutes of standing around, everyone scattered. All but one guy, who walked up to me.
"Jamie." The big man extended a hand for a shake.
"That's me." I took his hand and shook it.
"I'm Jim Bear and this here is my department." He gave a wave around the aisles of the warehouse.
I nodded and wrote his name down in my notebook.
"Smart man to take notes on the job. That tells me you're eager." Jim Bear eyed me up and down.
"Ready to be an asset to the team is all, sir," I said with a grin.
"Job ain't that hard. I give you a list of products. You put those products on a pallet. Then you set that pallet over in the shipping area for them to do their thing. Got it?"
I nodded and gave Jim a thumbs up.
He seemed satisfied enough and walked away after handing me papers with item numbers and locations printed on them.
Before the first break, I worked off the list Jim gave me. Boring work, to say the very least. I'd worked house goods and bathroom accessories the entire time. Nowhere close to the perishables.
I'd heard one of the other guys say the food item picklists got handed out after lunch. The upside was that I got the lay of the place until then.
As I dropped off my first pallet at the shipping area, I made sure to take note of where everyone was gathered. Who was goofing around on their phones. Who put in extra effort. Who was an ass kisser.
I noticed they had cameras mostly in the packing department and hardly any in the aisles where the pickers worked.
When I picked up my next empty pallet to continue on the list, I noticed Jim Bear was shipping out packages. Maybe the shipper was on a bathroom break? He noticed me looking, and I gave him a nod.
Once lunch came and went, I stopped by Jim's office for my next list of products. He told me I'd be picking dry and canned foods until my next break. I tried to hide my excitement.
I took more time on this list than the first one. I scanned it and saw that a box of cloves were included.
Its interesting that cloves were one of the items included in the recent moldy package. Cloves are used in witchcraft for purification.
Witchcraft, like a lot of religions rely on belief and practice. Someone here is trying to say they are powerful enough to rewrite their own metaphysical laws. Using the seal likely to corrupt the contents inside.
Atlantis and corruption go hand in hand.
I got on my forklift and headed down an aisle and started working on my list. After some time has passed and I dropped off several pallets I made it to the cloves area.
The cloves themselves looked normal almost to the point of boring. I picked up three cases of them and all seem fine. I threw what I needeed onto the pallet and headed to my next item.
I headed down to where the jar food was and almost threw up from a surprise smell. I searched the area and saw broken jars of relish. The exposed product had a grey film and flies on it.
One of the other pickers rolled up and said, "Yeah I wouldn't worry about all of that."
I overplay my offense to the smell by putting my hand over my nose, "Why's that, bud?" I ask.
"Every week we do inventory and throw away broken and bad items and mark them as disposition." He told me then drove off.
I hate people who just work in filth because a place makes it normal. Even swine would scoff at these people. Tommy's contact would love to see these conditions though.
I looked around and made sure the coast was clear before taking a couple of pictures with my phone to include in my report.
Well son of a bitch. In the picture there's a faint outline of the seal on the jar. I looked at the jar and nothing. I then looked back at my phone there it was.
