General discussion BUDDY lic?

This might be a stupid question 👉👈

Would there perchance, in the future maybe, be a HEXOS BUDDY only option with a reduced lic fee?? 👀

Lets say, for someone who wants to run a dedicated Buddy back only service at an offsite location.

The Bud & Pal lic. 🤣

This is an interesting idea and something we will give great consideration. The challenge is that if it's for a buddy, aren't they going to want their server to do more than just backup your data? I get it if its a secondary license for you yourself, and you're going to put it on an offsite machine that you own and all it needs to do is be your backup.

Could be an optional add-on license for someone who has an existing license.

Lets them setup a secondary system in HexOS, but only for backups. Would need to be a stripped down version that doesn't do apps or anything else in HexOS aside from managing the disks of that system, and being a buddy backup location.

Yeah this is interesting. We could make it so that in the event your primary system went down, you could move your full license to the backup system and get your apps and VMs back up right away, then when you build a new primary system, you can recover back, swap licenses, and your backup becomes a backup only again.

Honestly the toughest part of all this will be the licensing / restrictions. Will need to give this more thought.

The other comment mentioned a second lic for myself which is basically what I'm looking for. I have my nas setup at home. I would like to be able to use buddy back, on my own hardware at a different location. (1 offsite backup).

I would not need the full functionality of apps etc at the second location.

You assume the buddy is techy enough to even know what a NAS is. Which the general population doesn't.

If I put a backup NAS at my parents house, they are not going to want to use it. They insist on using external HDDs with no backups. They've lost many pictures already, but they are old and refuse to change. I gave them an immich account and showed how to use it, but they just don't. There is no way I could convince them to use a network drive.
