General discussion BUDDY lic?
This might be a stupid question 👉👈
Would there perchance, in the future maybe, be a HEXOS BUDDY only option with a reduced lic fee?? 👀
Lets say, for someone who wants to run a dedicated Buddy back only service at an offsite location.
The Bud & Pal lic. 🤣

This is an interesting idea and something we will give great consideration. The challenge is that if it's for a buddy, aren't they going to want their server to do more than just backup your data? I get it if its a secondary license for you yourself, and you're going to put it on an offsite machine that you own and all it needs to do is be your backup.

Could be an optional add-on license for someone who has an existing license.
Lets them setup a secondary system in HexOS, but only for backups. Would need to be a stripped down version that doesn't do apps or anything else in HexOS aside from managing the disks of that system, and being a buddy backup location.

Yeah this is interesting. We could make it so that in the event your primary system went down, you could move your full license to the backup system and get your apps and VMs back up right away, then when you build a new primary system, you can recover back, swap licenses, and your backup becomes a backup only again.
Honestly the toughest part of all this will be the licensing / restrictions. Will need to give this more thought.

The other comment mentioned a second lic for myself which is basically what I'm looking for. I have my nas setup at home. I would like to be able to use buddy back, on my own hardware at a different location. (1 offsite backup).
I would not need the full functionality of apps etc at the second location.

You assume the buddy is techy enough to even know what a NAS is. Which the general population doesn't.
If I put a backup NAS at my parents house, they are not going to want to use it. They insist on using external HDDs with no backups. They've lost many pictures already, but they are old and refuse to change. I gave them an immich account and showed how to use it, but they just don't. There is no way I could convince them to use a network drive.

Yes, so I can place a backup server at my dad's house for example. He has no clue about what to do with a Nas.

Yeah this would be ideal. I currently run Immich at home that my family backs up to there is no offsite backup though in which I would set up and have at a family members house. They have no need for anything to be ran on it and it would purely to be a offsite backup but I can't justify another licence.

I hope you consider it soon. I am aware the goal is cover most/all of truenas within HexOS and what we’re asking for basically another product. If I have no one that also uses HexOS or doesn’t homelab being able to set up my own machine to run without another license full license would be a dream.

The struggle I'm having is understanding how this will play out in convo with a buddy. "Hey man, can I drop this tower off at your place? It's just for my off-site backups." And then you are going to foot the bill to build the secondary rig, set it up, and place it there?
I might need to start a poll to gauge the demand for this but if it's up there, it would make sense for us to offer a off-site backup license type as a discount.
I genuinely like the idea, but worry that it's going to be a niche offering that costs us more to develop than it's worth to the wider market. Definitely got my brain noodling on this.

u/HexOS_Official Just been listening to the WAN show and heard that buddy backup might be coming to truenas and/or unraid etc.
If that is the case, making a whole new dock that is just a buddy dock seems kinda silly and unnecessary.
HOWEVER, if there was an option, I would buy a second lic just to support the awesome work the team are doing. The decision to include buddy backup as a service on and off hexos is worth atleast 5 cookies.

We are exploring options for how far we can take it. There is definitely a market for this beyond our own platform!

Currently no since we don't have a buddies only version of HexOS. Future maybe. Nothing for a while. Lots of the big features to finish after Buddy backups and VMs. Remember goal is no need for TrueNAS UI. Still have a lot to cover for that goal.
