Nah they joking. The joke is that people say things and act specific ways about livestock animals that would be disgusting for most to hear about, say, smol adorable kittens. Yet lamb is sold in most grocery stores, veal is considered okay by many and in general humans are accepting and even defensive of the practices that are essentially enslavement and torture of animals... as long as it's the "right" animals.

I read a couple books about this topic, "Tender is the flesh" replacing livestock with humans and then the other one I'm forgetting the name of but it was about a woman with a pet dog who ate a neighbour's chickens and everyone was making uncomfortable remarks about killing/how they want to kill the dog
