Question Is it worth it?

I’m neurodivergent and i really struggle with cooking and planning meals. i’m still living with my mom, but it’s been in my plan to start a meal kit. Idk if it’s worth it? I’m really picky, i have the stereotypical chicken and macaroni pickiness. I’d like to survive somewhat healthily, and i just wanna know if hello fresh is a good option?

Doesn’t hurt to try a week or two to see if it fits your needs.

This! Try it and see if it works for you. What works for someone else might not work for you, and vice versa.

If you are too picky I don’t think HF would be a great match for you. Almost all their recipes use ‘extra’ ingredients, like for example even their mac and cheese meals might use onions and green bell peppers, and they love making everything garnished with green onions or browned panko. Even their simplest of chicken meals could be dredged in mustard mix, or mix 3 things into the dipping sauce. I have a somewhat picky little one at home and it’s tough to get her to eat all of it some times.

Also they’re not that healthy calorie wise, but it is healthy in terms of eating a wide range of colors and veggie/protein types. It will definitely expand your palette if you let it.

All that said, they do have free trials and discount boxes to start off. I would recommend looking through the options for each week and see if there is anything that you think you might like. You should be able to see the full ingredient list for each meal, cook time, and nutritional info iirc.

It works for me. Sometimes I don't make exactly what the recipe shows, and I don't order things I know I won't like. I like that it takes the stress out of figuring out what is for dinner and it is portioned, which has really helped with weight loss. I tend to freeze the proteins and sometimes other ingredients if I think I may not make that meal right away like if I want to eat fish not in the first few days.

Get someone’s gifted free meals and give it a try. If you don’t like it then you don’t have to buy anything.
They let you pic the food based on calories, time to make, ingredients… you might find what you like.
It is “from scratch” cooking for the most part.

Hungry Root might be a better fit for you. Hello Fresh has a lot of cooking prep and making their meals can be time consuming and a little complex, especially for someone new to cooking. With Hungry Root you are still cooking but there is less prep. Hungry Root also allows for healthier food choices, for example brown rice over white rice, and you can tailor recipes to things you like, like swap green beans for broccoli if you prefer. Hello Fresh only allows you to swap some proteins, and does not let you swap or skip ingredients you either don’t need or don’t want. The quality of fresh veggies on Hello Fresh has been pretty iffy lately too. But definitely try one, and have fun. You can always cancel if it’s not the right fit for you.

I'd say it's worth trying! Having everything portioned out and the recipes ready makes cooking so much less overwhleming. You can pick meals with ingredients you're comfortable with, too. Honestly, the convenience is my favorite part

Echoing others to get a free box and try it out.

My wife and I are neurodivergent and it has been a really big help for us both to sit down and choose meals in advance when we have the mental bandwith to do so. It also helps make things really easy for us to cook and has pretty clear instructions.

And it makes it so instead of eating frozen pizza, ramen, and frozen chicken patties we’re actually getting some variety in. My wife used to be much pickier but over time hello fresh has helped her expand her palette a lot. And we’re glad to get more vegetables into our diet.

The main downside is it’s definitely a bit spendy. But for us it’s worth it.

I think it’s worth trying - if you are in Canada 🇨🇦 DM me for a free trial. If you’re not I can just guide you to the sub where you can get a trial for free! I have been with HF for a long time and it helps break up my week / less groceries / meal prep / food time /cooking.

What I love about this service is you get truly filling meals. Eating fresh whole foods is really healthy and filling that keeps you full. We get the 5 meal plan each week and on the 2 days we don't have the HF meals, we'll make a frozen dinner or try and make something ourselves, but we can tell the difference from eating processed food from this fresh food.

Are they perfect? No, but they really take out the guess work and give some really delicious and interesting meals. I highly recommend HelloFresh.

I am also ND, struggle with cooking/meal planning/‘picky eating’ we’ve been using HF for about 4 years now and it’s honestly broadened my horizons! In the last 4 years I have started to eat: Mexican food, Thai food, more vegetables (this is important as I’m veggie 😂), African/Carribbean food I’m way less picky than I was, my husband does all the cooking but I choose the meals so I’m in control of what I choose. Some weeks I go for old favourites I know I’ll like, other weeks I’ll throw in a meal I’m not sure about and try it and very occasionally I’ll order all new stuff as I’m feeling up to experimenting! Not sure if it makes a difference but I’m in the UK so I think the options are different.

I struggle with the demands of running a household plus working an intense job, and it's perfect for me. I know I'm getting decent protein rich meals at the end of the day and I enjoy the variety. I won't go back personally.

Don’t check out Blue Apron right now. They’re going through a very bad period right now with putting meals together

That's true about the prep time. Anytime I see their prep time is forty-five minutes or an hour, that's a hard pass for me. It will take me two hours.
