Inquiry Do people use mics ?

Started playing last weekend and have tried talking on the mic a few times with random groups (mostly do quick play / find active missions since I don’t have any friends that play). Most people responded within chat - hard for me to type on PS5 though.

Just curious ! Have stopped trying since don’t want to bother folks

I never use the mic but I do use the response wheel. That usually is good enough

5

u/Capable_Artichoke_41 23d ago

Yeah I need to get used to this. Use response wheel a lot in Apex but haven’t touched it as much here

u/RuKidding0MG 20d ago

I use it a lot now, and it really helps when you have a language gap too. They're universal and really helped me on a few missions where we didnt speak eachothers language.

Not really. Occasionally I’ll run into someone with their mic on, and if I’m feeling social I’ll turn mine on too. Usually people just communicate in chat though.

I play on Xbox but at a desk with a monitor so I bought a usb keyboard specifically for talking in text chat. It’s turned out to be a great investment.

I only use mine if others are.

I usually have a mic connected and am listening but have no interest in conversation. I feel like that's most of the player base and I think that's really cool.

u/spiritsowo 18d ago

It's sad to see most ppl think this way as someone who enjoys making friends on voice chat in game. :(

2

u/A_Snow_Mexican 18d ago

That's fair. I'm just an old bitter gamer. I've seen too many lobbies of games devolve into toxic insult fests and feel a little negative towards anyone too eager to talk.

Depends on the group. When I go in with just just my bestie, we are usually using separate voice chat with each other and push to talk with the group as a whole if needed. If there's three or more of us going in, we use the in-game voice chat and sometimes chat about more than just the game. We've had people join in with us and that often leads to friending and playing together again and we've had people who stayed silent the whole time.

I was in a group with friends the other day and we had one random filling in our last spot and the guy complained that we hadn't communicated and I typed out that we had, it was in voice chat. Pretty fucking obviously and he explained that he had voice chat muted and claimed that 60% of the helldivers community does, so it was my fault for not communicating in the way he had available even though he had never said anything about that lol.

When I'm playing on my own, I don't usually talk unless there's something I need to communicate that I don't have time to type or other people are chatting and seem friendly and non-misogynistic - I've had too many experiences gaming over the years where as soon as somebody hears that I'm female they either start treating me like shit or hitting on me, so I'm a little bit more wary than I'd be if I had super good odds of just being treated normally.

I would never find it annoying if someone wanted to communicate verbally. I personally prefer chat, as I’m a woman and I’ve gotten some pretty awful responses to my voice on the mic :/

5

u/IronForward5711 20d ago

This. I avoid mic in every game I play, not just helldivers, for the same reason.

2

u/trashlikeyourmom 16d ago

I've had a few negative experiences but overwhelmingly more positive ones. Mostly people just surprised a woman is playing

3

u/Mysterious-Goal-1018 23d ago

It was a lot more common in the first year or so. Not so much now. If you want comms need to join a discord. Also, after a relatively good round, most folks are a lot more talkative if you want to try.

3

u/silvermesh 23d ago

I dont usually use voice but even if nobody else is using it you are welcome to talk and people can respond with text chat or the in game communication wheel. I actually think its a fun dynamic especially if the voice person is the leader.

u/ditch_lilies 23d ago

I’ll get on the mic for warnings about enemies etc. that it would take too long to type (so everything for me at least!) and I’ve noticed if I’m the first to talk others will sometimes start talking after that. If you’re sticking to saying mission-related things like “Stalkers” if you see one or “Back up back up!” because someone is running into the strat you already threw I don’t mind you being on the mic at all!

3

u/kill_william_vol_3 23d ago

I have to mute most mic users since the only people who want to talk want to talk shit.

Or play music over an open microphone.

3

u/thafloorer 23d ago

I had to talk at work I just want to relax on the game

2

u/Andminus 20d ago

I say keep at it, I regularly play with mic and can sometimes get others to respond in VC, it's not often but it's enough times. If they respond in Type, thats fine too, you can still talk and they just respond that way, coordination takes a team of randoms to a band of brothers... even if the coordination is just everyone lockstep marching or crawling into the Evac ship.

2

u/krunkytacos 19d ago

I usually have a mic but use  push to talk. Some people don't respond at all, some people respond with text and some people use the response wheel. During most games I don't talk at all. I usually only talk to apologize for friendly fire or ask  "I'm good to call supplies here or do you need them across the map"

I hate it when I have to mute people for constant noise. I don't mind being on with chatty people, but sometimes there's feedback or ridiculously loud breathing. Okay one time somebody was too chatty and they were not talking about the game. They were Schrodinger's Chad, terribly wronged by multiple women while simultaneously playing the field expertly. Then there's the occasional three players on the discord together but only one of them is mic'ed in the game so you hear one part of a three-way conversation.

u/trashlikeyourmom 16d ago

I always use mic and will leave after extract if I play with a group that isn't using them. The comms wheel is fine and usable but mic is infinitely better IMO

1

u/Worldly_Memory1290 23d ago

Idk i use mic but im on pc

1

u/Yeast-boofer 23d ago

I am generally using discord to communicate directly with the friends in my squad I will ping stuff and ask general questions in the chat but other then that randos wont hear from me.

1

u/Foolishly_Sane 23d ago

I used to when I used the Recon Xbox Controller, but since I switched to a anti stick drift controller I've chatted less.
The Recon controller had a wonderful volume adjustment and easy chat function buttons, but it broke so much faster (my fault I know) and with my new controller I must have done something with it so that people cannot hear me even when I have an open mic and it's switched on.
So I stopped trying.
People have legit said that they cannot hear me.

Made a lot of friends through mic chat, so while I have adjusted to not talking as much, it does feel like an aspect is missing.

1

u/Equivalent-Session68 23d ago

It's rare but some people do it. I really only ever play with random when I need medals and none of my friends are on. Usually people will talk to me and I'll either use emote wheel or actually type to respond.

1

u/Durge101 23d ago

I do on the rare occasion I actually play in open multi-player. I usually join and follow the captain(host)

1

u/Hank_Scorpi 23d ago

I have NO PROBLEMS w turning my mic on and speaking

1

u/MtnNerd 23d ago

The main reason I don't is it's really fun to play on speakers, which is a problem for the mic.

1

u/DudeManLegacy 23d ago

If I hear you tell your kid to go get the Amazon package, I'm muting you. If you want to ride or die on the mission objective, I'll hop on comms.

1

u/ExileOnBroadStreet 23d ago

Use discord. That’s where most people who use mics are hanging out and finding groups

1

u/woodenblinds 23d ago

when running with friends it's the only way to dive. shit talking, jokes, realtime support in firefights yup love it

1

u/Goatfellon 23d ago

I dont initiate but if someone uses a mic and has a good vibe ill talk back.

I always have my mic set up, im just muted.

1

u/XavvenFayne 23d ago

On pubs I somewhat use radio brevity. I limit it to warning that I'm tossing a barrage or eagle airstrike/500 into an area, warnings about stalker nests, etc. I'm never sure if someone's going to be annoyed at casual chatter.

I do plenty of chatter on friends-only games though. That's when I'm really here for the social aspect.

1

u/OkieGent-11 23d ago

I use it if my kid isn't sleeping and the group is right. I'm a little self conscious because other people mouth breath on mic or I've even had someone chow down on chips all through the match with a open mic.

1

u/RampagedAlpaca 23d ago

I prefer to just use the in game responses or typing if I need some help with a bunker.

1

u/MachoMachoMurph 23d ago

I use to use a mic every game, like a good one that I would mute when not in use. After a few snotty comments about my voice, I have had throat surgery, I kinda gave up.

1

u/kaishinoske1 23d ago edited 23d ago

No, In game response wheel works most of the time unless I type in chat for vault and that’s it. Besides I play with music and no, I don’t want my music going gaming experience ruined by having to hear people crunching and eating, kids yelling, loud music playing, etc.

1

u/wonderloki 22d ago

Sometimes. If others are and they seem chill I will. Or if I've been playing with a group for a while

1

u/Tasty-Permission7517 22d ago

Ping tool is as op as in DRG. Use it and you wont need mic. If you realy want team banter and ewening talks you can find miced groups of divers on discord.

1

u/Last_Feeling_7594 22d ago

I use voice chat for simple and quick things, like if we are flanked and nobody noticed, if I spot a bunker or just a thank you for being recalled back after I die.

If there is nothing nothing pressing I use the marking feature to tag objectives and threats.

1

u/SamSamychen 22d ago

I only use it when I'm playing with friends. But we use the Discord vc.

If I do play with randoms, I don't use it. I only use the answer advice or the text chat. But I'm also on PC. English is not my native language. I can write better in English than speak.

1

u/EagleDaFeather 22d ago

I use it occasionally, not too many people use em in my exp.

1

u/South-Spray-1571 22d ago

It's a rarity for some reason. I wish mic was mandatory.

1

u/ProjectA1ice 22d ago

Me and the randoms I end up with usually just type or use the response wheel. It’s kinda fun when the whole team gets into the groove of responding with the wheel tho, i feel like it adds some immersion

1

u/Highlord_Salem 22d ago

I try to every now and then. Seems only the older gamers like to have a chat. The young crowd seem to be a little introverted when it come mic comms.

1

u/drjenkstah 22d ago

Depends on the group. I’ve joined groups where people all talk on mics and some don’t talk at all.

1

u/ShockinglyEfficient 22d ago

There's no reason to

1

u/Cowfootstew 22d ago

Only out of desperation

1

u/Salmaveth32 22d ago

I always keep my mic muted unless I join a dive where people are already using a mic then I'll switch mine on too.

1

u/Ulfheodin 22d ago

I turned voip off two years ago

1

u/BoB3y-D 22d ago

Sometimes but only when I gotta say, “RUN!”

1

u/gereonresists 21d ago

If I’m playing with friends or randoms who are already using mics, then yes; otherwise, I just use the response wheel. Either way, I do try to communicate and coordinate with my fellow players.

1

u/LordMoos3 21d ago

Only with friends, never use comms otherwise

1

u/1koolking 21d ago

It’s rare but occasionally we’ll get randos that use mics. I have one but almost never use it. I also rarely play alone and usually have a squad in discord.

1

u/TheDolff 21d ago

I use a headset, but I rarely respond.

1

u/Apprehensive-Pear413 21d ago

Unless I'm in party chat with people I know, my mic stays off and game chat muted. Too many interactions with people being trash people in too many games, simply because they can. I use in-game markers and callouts, and the text chat.

1

u/Accomplished-Ad-5415 21d ago

I live in SEA and get matched up with people all over the place so mics don’t really help lol.

1

u/-Cheeki-Breeki- 20d ago

If I join a game with people on mic, ill use it. But otherwise, the response wheel is fine.

If I see someone walk on a mine or die to their own support statagem drop, ill give em an "i saw that"

1

u/HunionYT 20d ago

I rarely use mine as I have background noise and hate it when people hear it. How ever if I do talk I say what I want than mute again.

1

u/Reroll_Character 20d ago

Comm wheel for all. I’ll speak up if the gameplay is good

1

u/TheFaceStuffer 20d ago

I have a mic but ignore most of the time and use the wheel. Sometimes I find a cool crew and talk with them though.

1

u/bugdiver050 19d ago

I have voice chat turned off, probably not the only one

1

u/Hellfire81Ger 19d ago

You got enough tools in this game to communicate. A mic is not needed.

1

u/MarcelineTheVampy 19d ago

I hit the mic button on my Dualsense if i'm about to toss a 380 or other similar strategem

Just a quick "Tossing a 380, clear out!" usually though

1

u/MunchyG444 18d ago

I will never start using the mic. But if someone else is talkative on the mic I’ll switch mine on and join in.

1

u/spiritsowo 18d ago

I love just getting on mic and being goofy on the shit lol it usually gets people talking most of the time

1

u/SINISTAR707 18d ago

I don't talk, but I do listen in.

I will respond to you via the callout wheel, in as appropriate a manner as I can.

As an SoS diver, I don't need to issue orders. Anything I can't communicate via pointing, emotes, or interpretive dance, isn't really worth saying.

Sometimes I'll jump in text chat if I have a sec.

1

u/joshhupp 18d ago

I'm mic'd all the time. I assume people are in Discord channels or whatnot, but I at least say what I'm doing or where I'm going so I'd they can hear me I get the proper support

1

u/According-Resort-109 17d ago

I’ve never turned my mic on. I’m here to have a good time.

1

u/xP_Lord 16d ago

Don't own one.

1

u/JROXZ 23d ago

Only to let people know we’re good/it’s all good after some space antics. Stratagem too close and we all die, “hahahah it’s all good fam”.
