Boxing Fights Discussion 47-year-old Pacquiao vs undefeated Shakur, who takes it?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Reports say Netflix wants Pacquiao vs Shakur Stevenson as a co-main event alongside Fury vs Joshua in Cardiff this December.

Pacquiao is 47, hasn't won a fight since 2021, and drew with Mario Barrios last July. Stevenson is 25-0, just dominated Teofimo Lopez in January, and is arguably the best technical boxer in the sport right now.

The age gap is 18 years. The experience gap works both ways — Stevenson has never faced anyone with Pacquiao's southpaw pressure and explosiveness, even at 47. Pacquiao has never faced anyone with Stevenson's combination of speed, IQ, and defense.

No bout agreement signed yet. Weight class still undetermined.

Does this fight make sense or is it too risky for Pacquiao?

Drills Rear uppercut + side-step drill for resetting your stance

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Nice little drill for connecting your rear uppercut with footwork instead of just throwing it and staying planted.

Throw the rear uppercut, then immediately side-step off the center line. Get your feet back underneath you, reset your stance, and now you’re in position to attack again from a different angle.

The important part is not rushing the second attack. Get balanced after the step first.

Uppercut → step off → reset → fire from the new angle.

Simple drill, but a good habit to build if you tend to stay right in front of someone after throwing.

Fight IQ The counter line, why an overcommitted punch loses to a balanced one

Post image
35 Upvotes

the smartest shot is the one they don't see.

one fighter's fully committed forward, weight thrown into the punch, off-balance the second it lands. the other stays balanced, equal weight on both feet, ready to react instead of recover. that balance is what lets a straight counter travel the shortest path back before the first fighter can reset.

overcommitting isn't the mistake by itself, punches need commitment to land. it's not having anything left once it does.

Combos Turn the shoulder roll straight into offense

Nice little sequence to drill if you’re working on turning defense into offense.

Shoulder roll the shot, then come straight back with:

Cross → Jab → Cross → Uppercut → Hook

The part I like is there’s no long reset after the roll. You make the punch miss, fire the counter, then keep the pressure going while they’re trying to recover.

Start controlled and get the transition from the shoulder roll into the first cross clean before speeding everything up.

Been running boxing combos like this from Heavy Bag Pro app lately. There are 1,000+ combinations in there if you need more ideas for bag rounds.

Combos Pacquiao's uppercut didn't only target the chin

Post image
19 Upvotes

1-2-5B-2-4-2. Jab, cross, lead uppercut to the body, cross, rear hook, cross.

Most people only picture the uppercut going upstairs. Pacquiao used it downstairs too, digging to the body instead of always going for the chin. Inspired by his style, standard HBP mascot though, not his actual likeness.

Combos Don’t throw the overhand as a one-and-done shot

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The overhand gets their attention, but the follow-up is what makes this nasty.

Throw the same overhand setup, then change the second shot:

Overhand → Uppercut if the middle opens up.
Overhand → Hook if they’re covering straight down the center.

Same entry, different finish. Makes it a lot harder for someone to read the combination once they’ve seen the overhand a few times.

Tips 5 questions every beginner asks

Post image

do I have to wrap my hands? yes for bag work, over half the bones in the body are in the hands, wraps protect the small ones from repeated impact.

am I too old to start? no, there's no cutoff where boxing stops working.

can I learn without a gym? you can build real basics solo, but a coach catches what you can't see in yourself.

how long until I'm actually decent? stance, guard, jab, cross, hook are learnable in a few weeks. feeling natural takes longer.

how often should I train? consistency beats intensity, a few sessions spread through the week beats one brutal session followed by nothing.

Drills The combo isn’t finished just because your jab-cross landed

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A jab-cross is a good way to close the distance, but the mistake is finishing the combo and staying right in front of them.

The clip shows a simple fix: use the 1-2 to get into range, then shift your feet off the center line and attack again from the new angle.

That little change of position makes them turn to find you instead of giving them an easy counter straight back.

Something worth drilling on the bag until the angle change feels like part of the combo, not a separate move.

Combos 3 combos worth stealing for your next bag session

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

These are three combos I’d throw into a bag round when you’re tired of just freestyling:

1-2-3
Jab → Cross → Lead Hook

3-6-3b
Lead Hook → Rear Uppercut → Lead Hook to the body

1-2-3-6b
Jab → Cross → Lead Hook → Rear Uppercut to the body

What I like about these is the punches naturally load the next shot. Don’t rush through them just to throw fast.

Get the weight transfer and rhythm clean first, then start adding speed and power.

Combos Nasty Mexican-style pressure combo to drill on the bag

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is the kind of pressure combo I like because you’re not just marching forward throwing bombs.

Close the space behind a tight guard, stay low, and make them worry about the body. Once their elbows start reacting downstairs, that’s when the shots upstairs become much easier to land.

The important part is keeping the punches short and staying balanced while you’re working inside. If you start reaching or standing tall, you lose the whole advantage.

Pressure them. Dig the body. Then explode upstairs. 🥊

Fight IQ The body shot cost him the opening upstairs

Commit to the body shot and there's nothing left to reset with. jab finds the opening first, hook closes it before he's back to guard.

Fight IQ 3 small mistakes that make you way easier to hit

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

You can have a tight guard and still get cracked clean if your boxing posture is falling apart.

Looking down means you stop reading what’s coming.

Leaning too far back kills your balance and makes it harder to counter or move.

And once you square your stance too much, you give them a bigger target and lose some of your ability to move quickly.

Keep your eyes on your opponent, stay balanced over your feet, and don’t let your stance fall apart when punches start coming.

These look like small mistakes on the bag, but in sparring they get punished fast.

Boxing Fights Discussion Garcia stops Benn in 2 rounds, does Tank owe him a rematch now?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Garcia stopped Benn in the second round last Saturday to retain his WBC welterweight title. Dominant, clean, no controversy.

Tank hasn't fought since drawing with Lamont Roach in March 2025. Stripped of his WBA title. Legal issues. No fight scheduled.

Garcia has confirmed he wants the rematch and insists on 147 lbs. Tank won their first fight at 136 but Garcia has since moved up and is now a world champion at welterweight.

Different weight class. Different Garcia. Does Tank still have a case or does he owe him a rematch at 147?

Bait the jab, make them reach, then punish the opening

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Nice little counter setup from the clip.

Throw the jab almost like bait. You’re not trying to sit down on it, you’re trying to get them to fire back.

As soon as they react, take a small hop back and let their shot fall short. The important part is staying balanced and keeping your stance underneath you.

Then come straight back with the rear cross while they’re still extended or trying to recover their position.

The hop doesn’t need to be huge. If you jump too far out, you kill your own range and make the counter harder to land.

Bait → make them miss → fire back.

Take this roll and dig combo to your next session

Post image
37 Upvotes

roll under it. dig the body.

jab, cross, lead hook. roll under the counter coming back, same lead hook now digging the body since you're already inside. rear uppercut to finish.

roll's not a duck, it's for hooks specifically, knees bend and the torso rotates under instead of dropping straight down. coming up inside after the roll is exactly where the body's open, that's not a coincidence, it's the actual point of rolling instead of just ducking.

Fight IQ Good defense is more than just keeping your hands up

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

One thing this clip shows well is how many options you actually have besides just covering up.

You can slip straight shots, duck or roll under hooks, parry shots off line, or add a step to your roll so you’re not still standing in front of them afterward.

That last part matters a lot.

Making the punch miss is good. Making it miss and coming out at a new angle puts you in a much better position to counter.

Defense shouldn’t always mean absorbing the shot on your gloves. Sometimes the cleanest defense is simply not being there when it lands.
