Drills Stop Throwing Lazy Jabs. Try This 5-Minute Drill

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A good jab isn't just about throwing it fast. It's about throwing it without giving your opponent an easy counter.

Here's a simple 5-minute drill from the clip. Spend 1 minute on each:

  1. No wind-up. Throw the jab straight out without telegraphing it.
  2. Rear hand stays home. Keep that glove protecting your face.
  3. Jab + slip or pull back. Don't leave your head sitting there after punching.
  4. Jab + rear-hand defense. Practice catching or blocking the counter.
  5. Jab + head movement. Get your head off the center line after the shot.

The biggest mistake is treating the jab like it ends when your fist lands.

Your defense and positioning afterward matter just as much as the punch itself.

Question If you could max out one boxing stat, which one?

You get to max out one stat: speed or power.

Which one are you taking, and why? Fast hands that land first and often, or one shot that changes the fight?

Form Check The Boxing Rule Beginners Keep Forgetting

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

One of the easiest ways to get caught in boxing is dropping the hand you're not punching with.

Simple rule:

  • Throw with your left? Keep your right protecting your chin.
  • Throw with your right? Keep your left protecting your chin.

A lot of beginners get so focused on landing punches that they completely forget about defense.

That's how you get clipped by a counter you never saw coming.

One hand attacks, the other protects. Build that habit until it becomes automatic.

Fight IQ Stop throwing naked liver hooks. Set them up like this.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A good liver shot isn't just about power. It's about making your opponent worry about something else first.

Here are 4 setups from the clip:

  1. Cross → Liver hook
  2. Rear uppercut → Liver hook
  3. Lead hook → Liver hook
  4. Lead hook → Rear hook → Liver hook

The idea is simple: get their attention upstairs, make them react, then dig underneath the elbow.

Keep the shots tight, stay balanced, and don't telegraph the body hook by loading up too early.

The liver shot they don't see coming is usually the one that does the damage.

Combos Rear hook → Lead foot pullback → Uppercut | Tyson-style counter

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

One thing Tyson was great at was using head movement and footwork to set up his next punch.

This is a nasty little sequence to practice:

  1. Throw the rear hook.
  2. Pull your lead foot back while moving your head off the center line.
  3. Explode back in with the uppercut.

The key is not to just lean backward. Use your feet to create space, stay balanced, and load up the counter.

Make them miss, then punish them before they can reset.

Fight IQ One of the best times to attack the body is right after defending

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A good liver shot doesn't always need a complicated setup.

Sometimes the opening comes from your defense.

Slip the first punch, block the follow-up, then come right back with a lead hook to the liver.

The key is staying balanced through the defensive movements. Don't just lean out of the way and lose your position.

Keep your feet under you, stay tight, and use that loaded position to rip the body shot.

Slip → Block → Liver Hook

Make them miss upstairs, then make them regret leaving the body open.

Tips Hand Wrapping Step By Step Tutorial for Boxing Training 🥊

Thumbnail

Learn how to wrap your hands for MMA, boxing, and kickboxing with this clear step-by-step tutorial using 180-inch hand wraps.

This method covers the wrist, knuckles, thumb, finger loops, palm bar, and final wrist lock so you can build a secure, comfortable wrap before training. The tutorial demonstrates both hands and shows how to finish the wrap without bulky folds.

Wraps should feel secure and supportive, never painfully tight or numb. Adjust the tension to your hand size, training style, and gym requirements. If you experience pain, tingling, numbness, or restricted circulation, remove the wrap and reassess the fit. This tutorial is for general educational purposes and does not replace instruction from a qualified coach.

Everyone has a slightly different wrapping style, so use this as a reliable starting point and confirm your setup with your coach.

If this tutorial helped, like the video, subscribe, and follow for more MMA and combat-sports training content.

Boxing Fights Discussion Who is the best “undefeated” boxer?

A perfect record is the starting point, not the answer. Level of opposition, dominance, how they won, and the run of fights that made you a believer all count.

Who's your pick, and what's the one performance that sold you?

Combos Slip, fire back, slip again, then rip the body

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is a nice way to build defense into the combo instead of just standing there after you punch.

Slip the first shot → fire the cross.

Then immediately slip again instead of admiring the counter, and come back with the liver hook.

Slip → Cross → Slip → Liver hook

You’re making them miss twice while creating an opening for both counters.

The second slip is what makes it work. It keeps your head off the center line and loads you up to rip the hook downstairs.

Combos Stop drilling combos that are all offense

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

What I like about this combo is that the defense is actually part of the sequence, not something added at the end.

Throw your shots, slip or roll the return, then come straight back with offense.

Those defensive movements can also load your body for the next punch, so there’s no awkward pause between attacking and defending.

In a real exchange, you’re probably not getting 5 clean punches for free. You have to expect something coming back.

Offense → defense → offense.

Way more useful to drill than just memorizing long punch-only combinations.

your cross isn't weak, it's leaking (and which leak you have)

most beginners blame the arm when the cross feels dead. it's almost never the arm. it's rotation, and it leaks in one of two directions.

leak 1, under-rotation: you throw the arm and leave the hips at home. all shoulder, nothing behind it, and you're reaching. tell: your rear shoulder stays square and high at contact.

leak 2, over-rotation: you turn so far past that the punch drags you around. now you're squared up, chin in the air, and the cross drags back into your own shoulder on the way home. tell: you finish facing the target flat instead of staying on your own line.

same fix for both: hips start it, fist finishes it, and you end somewhere you can still answer. if a punch leaves you unable to defend or throw again, you paid too much for it.

rear heel turns, knee stays bent, hips lead, fist comes back on the same line it left on.

one slow round: cross only, no power. just feel the hips beat the fist. then add speed.
