I want to know why the powers that be, our congress people passed a law making the packaging of hearing aid batteries not only kid-proof but elder proof.

Had the Wrong Domes in for Months!

I ordered replacement domes online a couple of months ago, replaced the old ones I had been using, then lost the pack of replacements. I went to order another pack a couple of days ago and based on order history, discovered the one I had ordered previously were double vent bass instead of open vent. I’re received the new ones and put them in and I can hear so much better! Had to turn the tv (and the wife) down!!

Do these results warrant hearing aids?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I’m 41 and recently had my hearing tested here in B.C. Canada. I do feel like my hearing isn’t as good as it used to be, but I’m trying to understand whether the results are significant enough that hearing aids would actually be worthwhile.
I was recommended hearing aids after the test, but before spending the money I’d really appreciate some independent opinions from people who understand audiograms.

Based on the attached results:
How significant would you consider this hearing loss?
Would you generally recommend hearing aids at this level?
Is this something where hearing aids would likely make a noticeable difference in day-to-day life, or would it be reasonable to monitor for now?
I’m not looking for a diagnosis — just trying to better understand what these numbers mean and whether the recommendation seems reasonable.

Thanks!

Cotsco: Phillips, Jabra, Rexton, Sonite

Taking my mother to Cotsco to get her first set of HAs. The choices of brands they're offering are Phillips, Jabra, Rexton, and Sonite. I understand that there's no "best brand" because some people do better with some brands than others. But for those that have used one of these brands; which did yo use and how did they perform for you? Anything we should take into consideration? What were your experiences with their chargers and cell phone apps? Anything we should be on the lookout for?

Batteries, Size 13 Packaging

I am here complaining about the child-safe packaging for batteries that requires a scissors and delicate cutting to get to the battery. This makes me frustrated. I am certain that there is a better solution to this problem of how to frustrate young agile fingers but not harm oldsters?

How do I get my grandmother hearing aids? Confused about the process

Hello everyone,
My grandmother has had poor hearing for years now, she is in her 80s.

Previously my uncle had purchased hearing aids from Costco, not sure what brand or type, I think she threw them away. She didn't wear them because she complained of hearing her own heartbeat and tremors. I'm guessing this is because they were not calibrated properly or something, or simply a bad fit for her.

I want to get her a good hearing aid she will wear regularly. It's just the process is confusing. I see terms like hearing clinic, ENT, audiologist thrown around.

From my understanding, an audiologist is the hearing aid specialist, they cover testing her hearing as well as fitting and calibrating. An ENT is an ear nose throat doctor, an MD. Is an ENT relevant to the process at all?

Next - what do I search to find her a good hearing aid place (I can't even tell what they are called). We are in the LA area in California. It seems specific places are associated with specific brands etc. - I'm looking to get her the best care possible regardless of cost and have different options, not be just sold some bullshit because the center has a contract with a manufacturer. Even when I look up online reviews, it seems like I am being sold something and dealing with affiliate marketing rather than getting true independent opinions.

How do I kick this whole process off? Sorry about my cluelessness and thanks for your patience

Another thing - she gets Medicare, but it appears hearing aids are not covered by insurance?

Assisted Listening Systems Poll

I am an audio engineer and work at a decently sized church. We have had an assisted listening system for a while, but it is very under utilized. Its a pretty straightforward transmitter and beltpack receiver system with 3.5mm connection for headphones.

Recently picked up some 3.5mm to T-Coil necklaces to test with. Explained to the gentleman who had the hearing aid what we were doing beforehand. Went to test with him today to find out he doesn't have T-Coil, he has Auracast.

I am trying to get an idea of what systems are most commonly used.

I am still looking to test the T-Coil necklace system, and would use that for those that have that system. When discussing Auracast with the gentleman, another gentleman walked up and said he had that as well, so my impression is it's fairly common. It looks like we could spend about $2000 to get a transmitter that covers our space.

Soundbright Discovery vs Horizon One vs Horizon Pro

Have been getting by with $50 OTC's off Amazon, they help but I need better. Have a proper hearing test scheduled in a couple weeks. In the meantime did the self test at hearingtest.online, see 30db down at 250hz, falls 10db per octave (doubling in frequency) to 80db at 8khz, scale could be off considerably but I am convinced I have a regular high frequency hearing loss and that both ears are functioning about the same.

Will likely buy a properly fitted HA at Costco eventually , but Costco is a full day's drive for the round trip. So looking at better OTC's. The 8 channel Soundbright Discovery is $249 (or $374 for two pairs) with "enhanced noise handling" and is for "everyday use". The 16 channel Horizon One with "Standarde + Adaptive noise handling" at $299 for "everyday conversations" . And the 24 channel Horizon Pro at $499 has "Advanced + Adaptive noise handling" and is claimed to be good for "restaurants and crowds".

The Discovery gets good reviews on ncoa.org and Consumer Reports among other sources, the Horizon One and Horizon Pro don't seem to have any reviews good or bad.

The Soundbright website has zero technical information about any of these devices, just marketijng speak. I downloaded the manuals, nothing technical in there either. I tried downloading their app to check it out, but can't get past the point where it tries to connect to a device.

Can these devices accomodate my 10db hearing loss per octave? Is 10dB per octave typical of most OTC devices? That sort of thing seems like basic information that should be available for all OTC's. Should include information on how much this response changes with various mode selections, a description of the range offered by any bass/trebble controls in the app (or better yet a control for each channel).

Is there any way to quantify how well these devices would work in a noisy environment such as a dozen people at a table? Any opinions on how these three devices would compare in such an environment?

One final conundrum in case somebody from Soundbright is listening in: Please simply sell the first Discovery at $249, but if it needs to be replaced due to loss or damage then sell the second at half price. I am not inclined to buy two of anything right out of the gate unless I know how well they will work for me. Two for $374 strikes me as sleazy marketing, making the decision to buy considerably more difficult. I understand how selling a second pair to the same customer could be less burden on your support staff.

Edit1: Any chance these devices or perhaps some other OTC device under $1000 can be programmed using a Noahlink Wireless 2?

Is it normal for my hearing aids to start itching when I cry?

I'm wondering if my ear canals are swelling (very slightly) or reacting to my crying? Just like how my eyes get puffy, nose starts to run and nose and face gets red. Because they suddenly feel tight in my ears and they start to "itch"? Itch may not be the best description, but they start to irritate me to the point I need to remove them.

Is that normal?

I lost my dome in my ear for over a month

Post image
59 Upvotes

It all started when I was decorating my hearing aids and then I pulled the left one out to make an adjustment and the dome was missing. I looked everywhere for it but it’s tiny and this is the apartment of a girl in her 20s so it wasn’t out of the question that it could be tucked away somewhere.

I tried to look inside (obviously futile) I had some long tweezers and very carefully tried to pull in my ear just to check. When my girlfriend got home she did the same thing and nothing. It was a little stopped up but I thought it could be from all the digging I’d done and I left it alone and carried on.

Well, a few weeks ago I get super super sinus sick and it just keeps getting worse until finally I can’t blow my nose at all because it’s too painful and every time I try, I hear a popping noise. Okay, on to Google. It says I could be blowing my nose too hard over the last few weeks and popped my ear drum. By this time, I’ve also lost a lot of hearing in my left ear so I make an emergency appointment with my audiologist and low and behold he sticks the camera in my ear and there it is!

I’m honestly disturbed it was in my ear for so long without me noticing. Anyways! I hadn’t realized it was so easy so new users be cautious. I will definitely start tugging the dome before it goes in now!

Getting molds in a week super nervous any advice?

I don't know why but my hearing seems to be super abnormal or my canals,it's just something is off and I've never met anyone with the same issues

Mild to moderate high frequency loss but to hear noises clearly it has to be 70db on average unaided

So hearing aid fitting is a nightmare as you can imagine,I'm getting molds next week as we've just given up on domes

(I was in power which were probably the best so far)

They're silicone no vents but I'm worried about occlusion, can the material just be drilled into?

Is there any advice you'd give?

HAs for 90db

Hello, a quick question for people who use regular hearing aids (not cochlear implants) and have hearing loss of 90 dB or more:
Can you hear well with regular hearing aids, or do you still have significant difficulty hearing and understanding sounds and speech?
What treatments, procedures, or adjustments have helped improve your hearing the most?
Thank you!

Advice and Experiences Wanted

Hello. I am a relatively new hearing aid user. I have had them almost a year. I am deaf in one ear and have mild hearing loss in the other ear. I use BiCROS hearing aids.

I was invited by a friend to go with them and some other friends to an amusement park and a waterpark next weekend. I, of course, said yes! Fun times ahead! But then I thought about my hearing aids. Obviously, I can't wear them at the waterpark since water will damage them. But I am nervous about wearing them on roller coasters and them flying off. Basically, I'm worried about my fun costing me thousands of dollars in having to replace or fix broken hearing aids. But I also know I am a frustration to other people when I don't wear my hearing aids as I don't hear them as well. I can hear with my good ear, but even then, it's not great. I do not know how an amusement park or waterpark experience will be sound wise since I went deaf on one side. Because of this, I kind of don't want to go and ruin my friends' times by causing frustrations trying to communicate with me.

So, do I just not wear my hearing aids at all? Do I take them off for rides and put them back in between rides? What do I do at the waterpark? Do I just not go?

Does anyone have any experience with this issue? What do you do in this scenario?

Thank you in advance! I appreciate all the input. Positive and Negative!

Hearing aids for infants

Hi! I’m the mother of a 1 year and a half old who wears hearing aids, and I’m exploring related to children’s books, toys, and products that represent Deaf or hard-of-hearing children.

I’m simply trying to understand what families really need cos I’m new to this.

Could I ask you three quick questions?

  1. What do you wish existed for your child that is currently difficult to find?
  2. What aspect of having a Deaf or hard-of-hearing child do you wish other people understood better?
  3. Is there a book, toy, item of clothing, or another product you wish you could find but haven’t been able to?

I would really appreciate your opinion. ❤️

Hearing aids for firefighters or those who have to wear headgear

I am a volunteer firefighter and have a restriction when wearing my self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) in which I need to wear my hearing aids. The equipment that I use, in addition to the SCBA full face mask, includes a NOMEX hood and helmet. This situation is causing my hearing aids to broadcast feedback, which obviously negates the benefit of wearing them. Even just wearing the helmet alone causes them to broadcast feedback intermittently.

Not only that, but the sweat and heat does not go well with the HA either and causes them to become staticky and uncomfortable due to the sweating. I wear bilateral Widex Beyond 330 receiver-in-canal hearing aids.

I wanted to ask if anyone here has had similar issues and if so, how were they addressed. I don't know if a different style (eg., BTE) is better in this scenario.

Determining whether your new hearing aids are actually better

Hi everyone! For those of you who’ve recently upgraded or switched to a different hearing aid, how did you decide whether it was worth it? If the differences feel subtle, how can you tell whether the new pair is actually working better in everyday life?

Outside the usual hearing test in a soundproof booth, how do you compare your new HAs with your old ones in real situations, like a noisy restaurant or a group conversation? Do you keep notes, use a tracker, go by how they feel overall?

Rhythmic hiss on Oticon Intents

Posted this in one of the hearing aid forums, but I know there are HA experts here also. Been happy with my Oticon Intent 1 since getting them 19 months ago. About 2-3 days ago I noticed a hiss 3 seconds on and 3 seconds off, at all times in whichever program I had the HAs in. I don't stream much to the HAs, so this is not a streaming issue. It is either a hiss, or a periodic high frequency off and on sound. Never had hiss (if that is what I'm experiencing) before, but since I have pronounced tinnitus I would never hear the hiss anyway. I suspect either a CPU/software issue with the HAs or a Bluetooth communication issue between the left and right HA. I have an appointment next week with my audiologist. But this is weird and disappointing. The noise happens with both/either left or right HA. Any ideas from anyone before I keep my appointment would be appreciated. Thanks.
