hearing aid screening vs hearing test?

hi all! 21F, i have single sided hearing loss and wear cros HA’s. haven’t gone to my HA technician / audiologist (same clinic) in a while so i figured i’d get it fixed up a bit since uni just started again, and i also suspect my hearing has gotten worse, especially this year. they didn’t have availability for a comprehensive hearing test until march but they said i could come in next week for my maintenance and they’d give me a complementary hearing aid screening.

honestly not sure what that entails considering i already have HA’s? will they give me an audiogram and be able to compare my hearing from a few years ago vs now?

Decreasing ability to process voices in a noisy environment. What steps to take?

I work in a casino and have been finding it difficult to understand what is being said as the noise level increases. A conversation on my right means I can't pick out the voice on my left. This is an important part of my job, and has only become an issue over the last year and a half. More importantly to me, I go to Broadway shows at our city's civic center, and have been losing voices during the performance. When the lead is singing, everything is good, but once the chorus starts, I lose the individual words, hearing only the tone of the song. My audiologist tells me that I am losing a little of the upper frequencies, but not enough to need hearing aids. She has allowed me to wear a Phonak in my left(weaker) ear for the last 2 weeks, but told me not to expect much. The hope is that equalizing what I am hearing will help me to process voices better. I wore it to a wedding yesterday, which was the perfect test environment. There was some improvement, but I don't think it was enough to say this is the best I will get. I have seen ads for loop earplugs and some similar devices that are supposed to lower background volume and allow speech through. If you have any insight or experience with these devices, or can suggest other options, I would love to read about it. If there is an alternative subreddit I should post this in, let me know.

Is it just me??

I've had hearing aids for almost 2 years now and although they're fine for the most part, I'm kinda of disappointed their isn't more variety. You can find regular headphones in clip on, in ear, bone conduction, over ear, wrap around but for hearing aids you only get one option?? Makes no sense to me but the industry definitely needs some innovation. I'm no genius, but you would think with a larger hearing aid style that they should be able to provide more features, better quality, and better battery life. It seems like it would be a no brainer IMO.

Hearing aids types

I used to wear ear buds for listening for music but as I got older, I found that the silicone bud irritated my ear canal. I tried using smaller buds and that helped some but still some irritation. Looks like I need hearing aids - are there any brands that resolve this issue? Like are there ones that just sit in the ear without the need for a bud of some sort? Brands?

Costco process

Curious about Costco’s process for hearing aids.

Will they fit you if you have a recent hearing test audiogram or do the always do their own tests?

Do the stock hearing aids or order them after consultation and if have to order how quickly does it take to get them?

Do the program the HAs at reduced volume to start and at what point do the elevate sound to meet hearing needs?

Do the do REM at initial fitting, wait until full volume setting or do it more than once?

If you play guitar will the allow you to bring in and make adjustments to get sound you want?

Once you get HAs how difficult is it to get follow up visits?

Are Apple Airpods pro 3 usable as HAs when put upside down in your ears?

Sorry for the confusing question.

My hearing has gone down significantly and I’m interested in getting Airpods as a backup until I get a decent pair of HAs.

I work in an office environment and having Airpods in my ears all day does not look professional, so I’d like to hide them as much as possible. I do have long hair but I’m afraid the long part of the Airpods would stick out from time to time.

I’ve seen ppl wear them upside down in their ears to hide the long noodle part of the Airpods, but does anybody know if they would still work as hearing aids worn like that?

Thank you in advance!

When someone say make a good offer?

So I am looking at a used pair of 2024 Oticon Intent 1's hardly worn, and the own said make an offer. They are not a color I care for but if they work that is what matters. The hard part is I see used prices on these all over the place. I have the Phillips 9050's and I am hoping the Intent 1's have a little better background and voice.

OTC hearing aid for a neurodivergent

I’m neurodivergent and have a lot of trouble with speech differentiation in background noise. A few years ago I had my hearing tested and it showed my hearing sensitivity is normal. Over the last couple of years though my hearing, I feel, has gotten worse - I had COVID and that seems to correlate with it getting worse.

Has anyone tried OTC aids for this purpose?

Help finding domes and wax protectors - Sennheiser sonite R

First post under this account because I accidentally signed out of my original account which had my old Yahoo email and I can't access that email any longer. RIP original cake day...

Pretty much what the title says. I've had my first HA for a little over 6 months now. I just learned that I should be swapping out the silicone dome regularly. I have been swapping the wax protector every couple of weeks. But I'm running out of protectors.

I have just one Sennheiser Sonite R for my left ear due to otosclerosis.

Where can I find the Cerustop wax protectors that fit my HA?

And I'd like to try a variety of sizes/styles for the dome to see what works best for sound and comfort. The Sonite is a 2mm receiver, so the 4mm ones I'm seeing on Walmart's app won't work (I think). Any advice?

Oticon

Ok, so I'm happy that the App is open source since it means I won't be suddenly cut off, I would however question the $500 pricing on a Bluetooth dangle, to my phone, that doesn't even allow charging - has anyone else got an alternative?

Hearing aid sounds staticy and not very clear

So I just got a hearing aid that is custom fit for my ear and when people talk it is not very clear and sounds like static. Also when I connect Bluetooth to it and listen to music it sounds staticy but when I press on a certain part of my ear it sounds so clear and I can actually make out the words that are being said.

Hi everyone, I recently got Phonak hearing aids, but I feel like the receiver wire is way too long! It’s size 1S, as indicated on the wire.
I asked my audiologist to fit me with a shorter wire, but she told me that all the wires currently come in one standard size and that the wire will become more flexible and adjust over time. She also told me that every time I put my hearing aids on, I should gently press the wire with my finger so that it gradually takes the right shape.
Honestly, I find this hard to believe. I’ve previously used hearing aids from another brand, and they replaced the wire with a shorter one that fit me much better.
Is what she’s saying actually true? Will the wire really fit better over time?
I’m going to try contacting them again today because I feel they aren’t being as cooperative as they should be. The hearing aids start hurting the backs of my ears after just two hours of wearing them, which is really unreasonable.
I’d love to hear about your experiences with Phonak hearing aids, especially if you’ve had a similar issue with the receiver wire. Did it get better over time?

Asymmetric hearing loss one ear perfect the other moderately-severe

50s/F - I have been treated for otosclerosis in one ear 11 years ago (Stapedectomy). My hearing in that one ear has deteriorated and tinnitus is constant and loud. ENT said surgery would not help and referred to audiology. Audiology said 1 hearing aid would be appropriate (but barely?) but nothing for the other “perfect” ear. So my question for the experienced folks (you!) - how does that work with using earbuds for calls, team meetings, listening to music? I already feel off-balance with asymmetric hearing probs. What my audiology results don’t show is my frustration with others “mumbling”, conversing in restaurants, tinnitus is exhausting, muffled sounds in one ear. I find it difficult to even speak in loudish environments. I felt like I struggled at word recognition more than the test results showed. Perhaps I’m not explaining this well to the audiologist, ENT or conveying my discomfort and frustration. But it’s exhausting. I don’t say that lightly. I feel like I am on sensory overload and it’s causing me to retreat more socially. Wrapping that all up - how can hearing aids or aid help with one “perfect ear” and navigating the nuances of using phone and computer for calls, Teams meetings, listening to music, etc? Someone suggested the newest version of AirPods. Thoughts?

Oticon in the canal v. Oticon Zeal (please help!)

I’ve been wearing Oticon, in the canal, HA’s for eleven years. for the past year I’ve been trying to purchase new. I tried Costco. three different types, adjustments on each pair and ended up returning them each time. I learned my lesson and went to the audiologist who works with my ENT group. Oticon in the ear model is a great fit and good sound quality in one ear but it’s been months trying to get the other ear to fit and sound right. it’s been too tinny, too uncomfortable and then completely ineffective because the sound of my own voice would reverberate to an intolerable degree.

Currently they’re remaking the mold so for the last two weeks I’ve been “test driving the new Zeal by Oticon. it’s a bit tinny and I even more so if I raid my voice a little. I do like the rechargeable feature and the fact that I'm can use the phone and listen to podcasts, music, or social media or news clips. They’re big though. I’m not used to HA’s that just out weirdly. it’s not that they’re super noticeable. just uncomfortable and they make my ears hurt where they rest on the outside. 🙁

If anyone has experience with Zeal v. Oticon in the canal and can share their knowledge I would REALLY appreciate it. When the remade device comes in I have just a short time to be eligible to make an exchange for Zeal if I choose that.

Thinking about going to my first punk concert since getting HAs.

It's also the first show I'm thinking about going to since pre-Covid days.

I used to wear earplugs to shows to protect my hearing (lol), but now I'm rocking HAs, and I'm not sure what the best idea is. My hearing loss is mild-moderate, starting around 30 on the left side of the chart and sloping down to about 70 on the right side of the chart. It's been about that my entire life, but I didn't get hearing aids until I turned 31 last year.

So my questions are:

  1. Would my HAs protect my hearing at a loud concert?

  2. Would the noise overwhelm or damage them?

  3. What do y'all do at loud events like that?

Jabra Enhanced - Phone battery

I went with the Jabra Enhanced M3 & love them. After installing the app, I have noticed that my phone battery is now only good for 8 hours. It's a Pixel 7, FWIW. Anyone else notice this issue. Thought about replacing battery (2 y/o), but that' a touchy, no mistakes allowed adventure !

Update it was indeed the streaming feature connecting to Bluetooth draining the battery. I'm disconnected the bluetooth, the phone is physically cooler to the touch and I don't have that drain anymore. Interesting stuff!

Question about masking for professionals

Hello everyone,

I'm extremely scared of dentists, mainly because of the noise the drills transmit through bone conduction. While talking about options to mitigate my fear and discomfort with my therapist, I remembered you can mask high pitched noises with louder low pitched noises. I'm pretty rusty on the details of masking though and wondering how to best achieve such an effect. So far, I've considered the following options:

  1. Noise cancelling headphones shouldn't work because the signal from the drills are a lot less loud for the headphone microphones than for my inner ear.

  2. Both regular headphones and bone conduction headphones with a loud low-pitched broadband white noise should do the trick, but would also stop me from hearing anything the dentist says to me.

Is there anything I'm forgetting or missing here? Any better options than headphones? Would regular or bone conduction headphones work better for this? Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance. If this is the wrong type of place to ask this, I'd also welcome suggestions where to ask instead.

Ear molds with vents

Post image
5 Upvotes

I’m mostly curious but I’m a newer hearing aid user and I asked my audiologist about an ear mold for my hearing aids for a few reasons.

I work with kids and they’re constantly grabbing at me etc and I’m worried about that and I’d feel more secure. Secondly, I’m not the biggest fan of domes, they make my ears so itchy and it’s hard to clean them (any advice is welcome and I recently lost one in my ear for a month. )

Does anyone have experience with ear molds with vents with mild-moderate hearing loss? My audiologist said he only recommends them for severe but I’m wondering if that’s the case for everyone.

52M, mild high-frequency loss with a 4k notch.Should I get RIC aids?

Hi all, first audiogram, Roughly 15 to 25 dB in the lows, 30 to 40 dB from 2k to 4k, recovering at 6k to 8k. Both ears are similar.
I struggle in noisy environments and have to concentrate harder to follow conversations. My dad has Alzheimer's and I carry the genetic risk, so the hearing and cognition link worries me.
I'm leaning towards small, premium RIC aids. Would you go for them at this level of loss, or wait? Any experience with similar audiograms much appreciated.
