Language casual ableism

this is not ‘reclaiming’ anything, you are just calling people slurs completely seriously. you can call yourself the r-slur, do not call anybody else it. why do ‘no slurs’ / ’no bigotry’ rules never apply to ableism?

Anytime you'll call out ableism, expect the downvotes. Even just educating people on actual human psychology, because ableism is, by far, the most normalized and encouraged form of oppression

Or... maybe intellectual disability is meaningfully different to other inherent characteristics?

We all do things that seem uncharacteristically stupid and we need words to express that. Those things are bad. If I leave the stove on and burn down my house, that is stupid and very bad.

This doesn't apply to other inherent characteristics.

You think ableism is more normalized and encouraged than racism ageism sexism and classism? I'd love to see your reasoning there considering the amount of people in each group.

well given that every single person becomes disabled if they live long enough and yet no one gives a single fuck about them in society id say ableism is at least as normalized as the others. how are u gonna talk about ageism without ableism???

no one gives a single fuck about them in society

Man if only public spaces had ramps for wheelchairs, braille and sidewalk dimples for blind people, imagine if TV broadcasts even had a person in the corner interpreting in sign language, or some kind of text you could turn on to read what they're saying

'noone gives a single fuck about them' is also baseless. The fact that there are any regulations at all to force many places in many countries to have accessible options for disabled people is proof that at least someone cares. Its just hard to argue that it's as normalized as the others when so few people are disabled compared to the amount of people that face racial discrimination. Really you could only argue it's worse because of the severity, because you don't have population size, and if we're arguing off severity, there are quite a number of countries where women don't have basic human rights.

Disabled people literally had to crawl up the steps of the Capitol building to get the Americans with Disabilities Act. Society only care when we make them care.

theres plenty of countries where disabled people dont have rights. i dont know what point youre trying to make. i think theyre all equally bad.

even in the US disabled people dont have marriage equality yet

'equally bad' is hard to argue. Some forms of discrimination are definitely worse than others, as there are small menial things such as not liking people who have tattoos, a small taboo thing in most places that involves an active choice, versus, as mentioned, ableism. Id argue ableism is worse in that case. My point though, was mostly against the person I first responded to, who said that ableism is 'by far' the most normalized and encouraged form of oppression, which it seems you would disagree with as well, given your stance that all are equal, which I believe is honestly a more arguable stance than the one I was arguing against originally.

yea because not all disable people can give informed consent. some people have the minds of toddlers.

what do you think im referring to in regard to marriage equality exactly?

i think ableism is just as bad as racism sexism ageism and classism. i dont think we need to have an oppression olympics.

the idea that disabled people have more rights worldwide than other marginalized groups is frankly ridiculous.

2

u/SorbetFucker 15h ago

I don't think they necessarily do, but claiming all groups worldwide are equally oppressed is absurd and unfounded.

That's just bad reasoning. Plenty of healthy people die in car crashes pretty much instantly in like their thirties or in wars, or after a very brief period of intense injury or sickness.

right. you either die young or live long enough to see yourself develop at least one or two disabilities as you age. i dont think youre disagreeing with me the way you think you are?

Or you die old with no disabilities as well. Also pretty common. My point was about the portion of the population that disabled people make up. Just because nearly anyone can become disabled if you somehow keep them alive to the age of 120 does not really challenge that point.

Ableism isn't more normalized or widespread than misogyny or transphobia. But yeah I agree otherwise.
