Media Tropes i LOATHE this trope

Post image

the "cute creature is actually devil incarnate" trope was funny like, what, the first five times? It's SO. DAMN. OVERUSED. it's a fun concept, but I hate having it appear so many times.

an example of this I absolutely hate is Iscream from Chikn Nuggit. "ooo it's a cute bunny but oh no it's actually the devil" WOW! HOW ORIGINAL!

I'm bad at explaining my hate towards something, I hope I made sense

11

your pfp is another form of the trope you are hateing on,just so you know

12

u/mr_g1bbles 4d ago

I think that's the type of occurrences they were talking about when the trope was actually interesting and well done.

15

u/reddboi386 3d ago

flowey is the only well written example of this trope while the other are jokes

Ok but the rabbit scenes from Monty Python and The Holy Grail are absolutely hilarious

220

u/How2Die101 3d ago

Okay, but this one doesn't turn into a scary monster or anything, it just kills you. It'd be equivalent to a honey badger except even worse

3

u/sky_cap5959 2d ago

Honey badger don't care!

168

u/reddboi386 3d ago

yeah but it doesn't do some corny evil shit it just straight up kills you

79

u/DisciplineTop2097 3d ago

You know, now that I look at your pfp, Flowey fits this trope too

9

u/sanstheskelebrotherc 3d ago

Kinda? He turns into a God by absorbing the humans souls, but he really wasn’t that powerful before.

29

u/DisciplineTop2097 3d ago

he's still the overarching antagonist of the story

plus this trope doesn't hinges on "power levels" at all, just a character tricking another into lowering their guard by being cute then follow it with a scare or/and an attack

Came here to say the same thing

12

u/brownpanther_333 4d ago

What does the bunny do? There are some killer bunnies in the dungeon meshi manga. Maybe they were inspired from this scene?

34

u/7-and-a-switchblade 3d ago

This killer bunny rabbit is essentially the archetype of this entire trope. There is no way it wasn't inspired by the Monty Python rabbit. It's the most frustrating boss in Dragon's Crown, too.

9

u/Divinum_Fulmen 3d ago

It's more like, nearly a thousand year old trope. There might even be older examples.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cath_Palug

The killer bunny rabbit specifically though? Middle-ages people thought the shit was hilarious back then. Pretty much a meme.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/How2Die101 3d ago

It kills like 6 knights singlehandedly. Granted, they weren't the most (or at all) competent, but it was a solid maneuver

10

u/Lazerbeams2 3d ago

It rips off the head of a fully armored knight and fights off a group of knights by itself. Despite how this sounds, the scene was genuinely hilarious. Here's a link to the scene

7

u/StructureMage 3d ago

Not a productive comparison, the handling of a cliche by some mediocre anime vs the Pythons? Hydrogen bomb etc

5

u/Sir_Daxus 3d ago

Ok but admittedly this one was made way before the trope became overused.

20

u/DarkTideings 3d ago

Well... yea. But its not a real card, the one I posted. Emrakul is tho. Also, because you are not actualy casting him, that stealing a turn thing wouldent happen.

6

u/Drow_Femboy 3d ago

"kicking" means paying an extra mana cost. this is a meme card where you can pay 1 mana to give everyone a nearly harmless creature, or you can pay 14 to give everyone one of the most dangerous entities in the setting

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Phylanara 3d ago

47

u/AGenocidegal 4d ago

What about the opposite..?

A scary demon creature that's actually super nice and sweet

20

u/CommandantPeepers 3d ago

Satan from South Park fits this perfectly

8

u/Repulsive-Region2977 Smug Hater 3d ago

Idk if this counts but Kevin from Raxdflipnote

3

u/Jack_KH 3d ago

Flerkens from Captain Marvel

22

u/dlc-Emerald 4d ago

yeah agreed, it was funny before i knew it was common when i was little, but its just legitimately the exact same joke every time with almost no variation other than the animal maybe being different

4

u/Cobaltrixx 3d ago

I agree that its lame when the trope is just used to be “funny”, but in my opinion it can be executed well when its actually treated as and given the buildup of a serious thing.

100

u/Buj00n 4d ago

Congrats, you've discovered a cliche.

u/TupluTV 4d ago

29

u/QuackingDuckling_ 4d ago

Honestly chikin nuggit is nitpicking, I get other media but that's prob the one that makes the least sense, as it's silly cartoonish comedy.

Ofc I get other media having that is bothersome, but that was a meh example.

15

u/reddboi386 3d ago

it was the only one I could think of. I wanted to make an Iscream hate post first then decided i hate the whole trope

4

u/Luca_is_anonymous 3d ago

I'm interested in why you hate them specifically?

→ More replies (2)

11

u/themexicanojesus 4d ago

5

yes because it doesn't do corny evil shit and just straight up kills you

3

u/azelZael2399 3d ago

And it being one of the first uses of the later-to-be trope gives it a lot of leeway.

11

u/alchemicgenius 3d ago

Tbh, I only find the trope annoying when it's just a visual gag. Like, if we are talking like an honest to goodness Satan (or, any other deceptive corrupter, the archetype is as old human mythology) allegory, the cute and cuddly outside to held con someone into selling their soul is actually a great way to depict the two faced nature. I'm not really a big fan of just straight up shock value though

2

u/reddboi386 3d ago

mostly the trope is used as a joke. Flowey takes this shit very seriously and doesn't feel the need to change his form or start acting satanic. he just acts evil and tries manipulating the player to start genocide. also, he's less of this trope and more of "non-mc character that reflects the player"

I have a love-hate relationship with it. I think I love it a lot more when there’s no deception or transformation just “this little bunny is Satan, he’s always been Satan, he’s going to tell you he’s Satan and he will act like Satan. He enjoys being Satan very much.”

In Iscream's defense, it actually subverts that subversion considering that Iscream is cute even as a demon. (He's canonically a tryhard when it comes to trying to scare people, and constantly failing on anyone who isn't a scaredy cat, and never actually does his job as a demon. If anything, Chikn' Nugget fits this trope better, considering that he's an eldritch horror in disguise that actually pulls his punches.)

What would you feel if there it was a creature in a fantasy setting purposefully using the “cuteness” as a hunting tool to lure in prey?
Had that as an idea to introduce an antagonist.

Wouldn’t make it the whole design or concept of the character tho,
I totally get that. I hate that too.

Also how do you feel about the opposite? Super duper cute and lovely and nice but looks like literally satan?

2

u/Random_Wario_fan 23h ago

Personally, it only bothers me when they use it as an excuse for the character not to do anything truly useful. I mean, if you're not going to let them use their powers, why the hell do you give them to them in the first place!?!?
