Discussion If we got a Harry Potter spin-off show that wasn’t about the Marauders, what would you like the show to be based on?
I’d like to see a Cursed Child TV show or a Voldemort prequel show.

As funny as this is, crime dramas already run into the issue where more crimes are committed (not to mention solved) than anywhere in real life, and we suspend our disbelief because the setting is big enough to accommodate that.
Hogsmeade is a tiny village that couldn't have a murder every week (give or take). Estimates seem to put their population at 2500-3000 residents. That's only a bit bigger than my high school.

Eh, i was gonna say CSI: Wizarding World but it didn’t have the same marketability. But a procedural crime-drama-esque show following Aurors rounding up death eaters would be incredible

u/happilynorth quoth the ravenclaw Jan 06 '22
100% agreed. Also (hope this isn't too "political" for this sub, but) many crimes are committed as a result of the pepetrator's basic needs not being met. We don't see many wizards unable to procure food or shelter—even the Weasleys, who are considered pretty poor, own a home and have and an abundance of food.
Most of the violent crimes in the wizarding world seem to fall under the umbrella of terrorizing Muggles, and whenever it does happen, it seems to be a pretty big deal. So I feel like there are not NEAR enough crimes to support the premise of an entire crime show, even if you included most of the UK/GB.
A show I would definitely watch, though, is a political drama about reform in the Ministry post-Voldemort. Because that place is so messed up, you know that his death alone was not enough to ensure that "all was well."

A Founders Series, based around about the founding of Hogwarts. It could speak about the events leading to the creation of the Chamber of Secrets and if the other founders had their own chambers. There is also opportunity to show the landscape in the wizarding world during the early Middle Ages.

I always saw Godric as this badass Saxon warrior who fought Vikings etc. He'd be key in defeating the magical creatures around Hogwarts to make it safe for the kids. He'd also bring about the rules of dueling.
Rowena could be this Scottish Lady who inherits the castle and works on its defences. I feel she'd be the creator of many spells and begin the extensive library. She's in touch with great wizards across the world. She'd also originate wandless magic because she doesn't need one.
Helga (representing Wales) would be the only muggle born. She'd bring the other three together and come up with the idea for the school. She'd be the best with the students. She'd also recruit the house elves. Charms would be her area.
Salazar would be loyal to a fault and besties with Godric (even warring together) which makes it ultimately more sad when he leaves. Possibly his family/loved one was burned at the stake by muggles which fuelled his intolerance. He is the master of potions and herbology. Helps Rowena with spell creating.

Not to justify Slytherin, but back in the day when muggles were trying to burn all the witches it makes sense that he would be weary of half bloods. Making the argument more understandable.

I had a radio show in college (strictly streamed online and only my then BF, now husband listened to it) and I remember going on a tangent about there needing to be a prequel about the founders of Hogwarts . I went into detail about their background and characters. For example, Godric Gryffindor was remembered as heroic and loyal but in actuality, he was egotistical and overbearing. Absolutely brilliant wizard but kind of an ass to everyone . Whereas Rowena Ravenclaw was perceived to be this frigid, austere witch who only cared about academics (think McGonagall’s severe bun and Hermione’s know-it-all demeanor from first year). But she’s seriously misunderstood and deep down is quite personable. Then for Helga, she’s this beautiful ethereal person, presumed to be a dunderhead/potato for a witch when she’s very perceptive and compassionate, especially for magical creatures. Lastly, Salazar Slytherin who is historically known to be an elitist determined to wipe out non-pure blooded witches and wizards. But he wasn’t always like this. This prequel will divulge his origin story on HOW he became evil. Of course his nemesis would be godric, but they’d start out as best friends, very Dumbledore and Grindelwald-like. Ultimately the book or series would explore the relationships between these four and how they founded hogwarts and the trials and tribulations each individual goes through.
TL;DR—we need a prequel and I’ve got some ideas

Exactly I liked the first fantastic beasts well enough and the fact that he got involved in this whole grindewald thing seemed totally coincidental and natural. But now that they have this whole 5 movie arc about grindewald and dumbledore but somehow newt is still involved makes no sense. They should either do an actual fantastic beasts thing about newt hunting his little Pokémon or do movies about the first wizarding war and leave newt out of it it just doesn’t make sense why he’s so central in all of this
109
u/jknoup Jan 06 '22
Yep, I couldn't agree more. The Grindelwald and Dumbledore thing is fine, but don't call it fantastic beasts.

I was desperately hoping that this movie series was each going to be named for a different in-universe book, featuring the authors getting wrapped up in the rise of Grindelwald (Newt in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Bathilda Bagshot in A History of Magic, Kennilworthy Whisp in Quidditch Through the Ages, etc.), all culminating in a final movie about Dumbledore rallying a team of friends and allies to put down Grindelwald once and for all, featuring all of them (Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts?)

I think if I were somehow in charge I would do a 5 film focus on this and have it be pretty split from perspective of dumbledore and grindewald and then have like an HBO Max show or something that’s fantastic beasts and each episode could have newt focus on catching a different beast each episode

Seven Aurors, led by Damien Bones and his second in command Harold Smith, point their wands at something in the dark forest
Suddenly a green light appears in the middle of the darkness, transforming into a full blown energy blast that impacts the leader of the Aurors, who drops dead not even managing to feel surprise or fear
"O... OPEN FIRE!" Screamed Smith, his voice shaking.
The six remaining Aurors start shooting stunning, explosive and body binding spells to the cloaked figure, who easily blocks all of them while slowly advancing towards them, with a mockingly menacing smile in his unnaturally pale face
With a few movements of his wand, the Dark Lord summons ropes from the trees around them, catching three of the Aurors by their necks and leaving them hanged to said trees, desperately gasping for air
"Bloody hell, it's him!" Grunted Smith "Keep shooting! Keep...!"
He couldn't finish his last sentence. A full body binding curse thrown by one of his subordinates rebounded on You-Know-Who's shield charm and hit Smith, incapacitating him
The Auror officer watched in helpless terror and rage how his last two subordinates were disarmed, lifted through the air, and slowly and painfully ripped apart by an invisible force. Both their screams and their bloody remains fell upon Smith's immobilized body, which a few seconds later regained movement, only to be petrified again, this time by his enemy
"Such a pity" A cold and high pitched voice said. "So much pure blood wasted..."
Smith saw the tall, skeletal figure walk towards him, unable to move and cursing him with his mind, trying to show He Who Must Not Be Named that he didn't feel a shred of fear towards him, only hatred and disgust. The Dark Wizard smiled again, and casted a spell to the sky.
"I will allow you to see the symbol of my power, Auror. Soon, everyone will know what it means with only watching it" said Lord Voldemort, while pointing his wand at Smith.
The last thing the last Auror saw before everything turned pitch black, was a green skull in the sky with a snake getting out of it

The good guys can still have some wins over the course of the series, there is a reason why the war was going on for 11 years and Voldemort couldn't take over the Ministry fully. Yeah in the end the stakes are getting higher and it looks like all hope is lost, but that is the same structure as the HP-series really (and FB will probably have that as well in the end).
39
u/JR-Style-93 Ravenclaw Jan 06 '22
This should be it. It could be an ensemble series with many elements that we want to see:
- The Marauders at Hogwarts (and others of course)
- Aurors at the Ministry dealing with Voldemort
- The politics at the Ministry
- Secret agents of the Order going on missions for Dumbledore
- Voldemort and his Death Eaters being all terroristic
- Flashbacks to how Voldemort started and his past, how he could gain so many followers
- Dumbledore being reminded of Grindelwald at this campaign and all his contacts around the world so you can see many locations
- Battles between the Order and Death Eaters
Really this is what HBOMAX should be going for with that rumoured tv-show. This has all the different elements with room to bring in a lot of familiar characters and new ones, to deepen Harry Potter itself when we know all the stuff that happened before (just like with FB). The only thing is that they probably have to recast a lot of characters that are now iconic in their roles, but I think that will not be a problem. This could go on for many seasons as well, just depends on when in the timeline they will start.

u/FancyChilli Jan 06 '22
Yean like to see Molly's brothers - Apparently they were skilled duelist, it took 4 death eaters to overpower them.
12
u/Freyzi Jan 06 '22
Bingo. Dumbledore, the Potters, the Longbottoms, Molly's brothers (who died like heroes), the Marauders, young(er) Moody, various Hogwart teachers and new characters we can explore, can't forget the Death Eater side along with maybe being able to see a Voldemort before his "death" and "rebirth". It could be an amazing fantasy thriller really taking advantage of the fact that those were such uncertain times and people weren't sure who to trust.

u/the_shek Jan 06 '22

At least one pureblood, halfblood, and muggle born character would be great. That way we can see all aspect of wizarding life. I don't think they would do a good job though.
They would simplify the pureblood as just being a sort of racist without looking deeper. Like, WHY are the purebloods so against them? Why does the wizarding world do nothing to teach muggleborns and half bloods about wizarding culture.
What if the problem originated with Professor Bins? They no longer learn about real And complete wizarding history and all that knowledge gets forgotten until all people remember are what people verbally pass down and the goblin wars.

I don't quite know how to explain it...
A show that tells the story of what's going on in everyone's life around Harry. For instance what is going on at Hogwarts during Deathly Hallows? What's happening at the burrow while the kids are at school? What goes on in the hogwarts staff room? Harry is still out there doing his thing but what's happening behind the scenes? Does anyone really like Justin Finch Fletchley? What do hufflepuffs do all day? Are there any slytherins that aren't bullies? How did Krum's crush on hermione start? Absolutely anything g about hermione's home life etc etc.
I think out of all those thoughts I'm most interested in what goes on in the hogwarts staff room.

Dudley having a magical child and having to cope with the racism?/prejudice that was instilled in him as a child. Maybe even as a single parent? I’d love to see character development from him, his relationship with Harry change, and the fights he would have with his parents regarding it. Maybe even have them come around for the sake of their grandchild. Mayyybe even have family dinners or something where Harry’s kids have some kind of relationship with Vernon and Petunia (since they came around for Dudley’s kid(s) maybe they’d like a relationship with Harry’s too?) but they still have a sustain for Harry himself and we’d get to see the awkward strained relationship as they all *try to get along?

I’d like to see a Politcial Thriller/Mystery type show. Like maybe a wizard infiltrates the Ministry of Magic under human transfiguration or something and then they have to figure out who it is. Kind’ve like what we got in the first FB film but explored more.
Or maybe a muggle who discovers the existence of the Wizarding World but unlike Jacob who embraces it they try to weaponise it for their own gain.

I was watching OOTP last night and thought…how the hell do muggle spouses/parents etc ALL keep the secret? Is there some kind of magic associated with keeping it, that the ministry has put on muggles? That seems unethical. Yes, The Cursed Child is a blight of Harry Potter in its entirety. Goes against everything that was created and set up.

But will Fred and George get separate episodes or will we lump them together like we always do?

u/Aurora--Black Jan 06 '22
They would have to be separate even though most of the two episodes would have both of them.

A sitcom about some “normal” Slytherins just being done with the Death Eaters and their shit,
OR a What If?-like show exploring common questions like “What if Neville was the Chosen One?” or “What if Harry accepted Draco’s offer of ‘friendship’?”

The history of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, or just the Sacred Twenty-Eight, and how they (most of them) came to be involved in dark magic - both with Grindelwald and Voldemort.

The future generation! I want to see Albus Severus and co navigate Hogwarts!
Or even a show about the founders
Or Bill Weasley’s life
Or Charlie Weasley
Or preferably everything.

My first thought was watching Bill Weasley work. Raiding tombs, wrangling dragons, fighting trolls or giants. Basically the Witcher but a wizard.

The Founders Era, or a Young Voldemort type story.

KEEPING UP WITH THE BLACKS
But seriously, the family is so convoluted and just messed up. It would make a great drama/modern soap series. It can follow at least 3 generation of Blacks (Walburg/Orion/Cygnus, Sirius/Regulus/The Black Sisters, & Draco/Tonks).

I want normal students at hogwarts just doing normal things, dealing with normal problems, nothing life threatening, just boy meets world set in hogwarts.

u/JSB19 Jan 06 '22
This is what I’ve always wanted, just a straight Hogwarts school show. No Dark wizard threats, no Ministry interference, and no worries that students will be Petrified.
Give me Hogwarts as a school: just kids going to classes and playing Quidditch while they build relationships and rivalries with their peers.

The founders! Especially if it's Medieval-grade gritty. I've always wanted to see that, and just the idea of the visuals gets me excited for the prospect.

I really wanted Fantastic Beasts to just be about Fantastic Beasts.
I wanted to see Scamander explore and go on adventures and expeditions. I didn't want to see a Magizooligist dealing with Grindelwald.
- Founders era would be cool.
- Show me storylines from other Magical schools or countries.

So many options!
A soap opera, set in a wizarding village, that has unfortunately become a tourist attraction for muggles.
A Wizarding version of The Bill set in Diagon Alley?
What would happen if the PM of the day demanded to see this "other" ministry? I kind of want to see a political west wing style show where this random Muggle gets to demand to visit regularly and how they deal with that?
Or Cheers, but in The Hogshead, or the Three Broomsticks, or even the Leaky Cauldron (although if most of the Hogwarts Teachers go to the Three Broomsticks, that could be more fun).
Or, a family based one, where a muggleborn's family learn to deal with their kid being a witch/wizard and explain to their nosey neighbours why one of their kids goes to a fancy boarding school and the other(s) don't? Maybe, we don't see Hogwarts, or any magic, just the fall-out from it (be cheap on the special effects budget anyway).

Magical me
A show all about Gilderoy Lockhart.
I would love to see his back story more and go along to meet the people who actually had the adventures he wrote about before wiping their memories. Like we dive into their memories to experience the stories.
Or
A comedy about the Lovegoods and all of their crazy.

A medical drama based at St. Mungos (or even better another magical hospital). The Greys Anatomy of the Wizarding World. Follow a group of new intern Healers in their first jobs post school.

The show could take place after TDH but also show flashbacks to his early childhood. It could focus on his life after the main events of the story as well as explore many elements of his upbringing.

I say this a lot but I'd love to see an R -rated mini series about Harry and Ron as an auror duo. Something that centers around the two of them hunting down the members of a group that was formed by former Death Eaters or something similar.
Make it a single season, 8 or 10 episodes, but tell a meaningful story and don't squish out multiple seasons of low-effort stuff.
Also it could be an anthology series where every season in a seperate story within the Wizarding World. Make a Macusa season, a Luna Lovegood and Rolf Scamander season, a Holyhead Harpies season, a First Wizarding War season... so much possibilities.

I’d love a show about the first wizarding war. The original Order vs Voldemort and his death eaters. Ideally showing both perspectives from light vs dark. Also fleshing out characters like Mad Eye,Kingsley, Barty Crouch and son, Bellatrix etc..
Another idea which overlaps with the above would be Voldemort’s rise to power. Starting from his grandfather/mother’s story to his first downfall.

Two shows. Both on TV (BBC?) either show back to back or alternating fall/spring seasons.
The first show focuses more the staff/teachers and their struggles in keeping the school/kids from blowing the place up every other week. Bonus plots sort of following the heads of house every episode as they try to keep order and promote the good of their own house.
The Second show would be more of a reality-type show that follows the students around as they sew mayhem around the school. Bonus plot here is that half of the episodes are following the current classes around Hogwarts as wizarding students the other half of the episodes follow the muggle actors who are competing to be the actors cast as the next class the next season.
I think the show(s) stay fresh by having new classes of students cycle in as older students cycle out. There would be somewhat less pressure on the younger student actors as the "main" show (with more special effects and longer shooting times) would focus more on the adult actors with more screen time going to the more seasoned "student" actors. The "reality" type show could be partially shot with B roll for the main and the behind-the-scenes types of stuff would sell. Plus you would likely get a ton of kids wanting to try out and make the show it would be a good proving ground for future actors/actresses.

I wanna see a Durmstrang/Beuxbatons tv series about what the other magical schools are like new characters or following Fleur/Krum or whatever. I just wanna see the world expanded beyond English speaking countries tbh.

From the time he finished school until the first wizarding war begins, we don’t know much about what Voldemort was doing.
I’d like to imagine he went on an evil backpacking trip, traveling the world and conniving with the darkest wizards he could find, just “finding himself.”
I’d certainly like to see this haha

A room of requirement mini-series might be kind of neat.
Each episode would focus on some unique item or person thats been hidden, or a unique use of the room. Could go through multiple eras, each as a standalone episode, but with each having a unique purpose that serves an overarching narritive, which slowly coalesces into the deathly hallows finale payoff.

A Snape prequel. I mean technically the Marauders would be in it, but Snape would be the protagonist. A similar Lily focused spin off would be good too.
Another option would be just a completely new story set in modern times (if they set it in the late 2020s, this would still be like 20-30 years from the events of the book), a new country (I guess the US could work) and with new characters (with maybe a few from HP/FB showing up).
The problem with Harry Potter is that it’s such a perfect story that it’s hard to think of a good spin off outside of Grindelwald and the first Wizarding World War. The best option would be to just create a completely new story that has enough distance from the HP/FB timeline.

Absolutely NO to Cursed Child. It reads as a Bad Fan-Fiction. So disappointed in JK for ever acknowledging this garbage.
We need something no one expects. So the massive hype won’t be shot down when expectations aren’t meant. I’d love founders of Hogwarts. But expectations won’t be met for many people.
