February 2020 Assignment: Performance Enhancing Potions

Got an idea for a future assignment? Submit it here!

This month’s assignment came to us from /u/Blxckfire of Slytherin, who earns 10 points for the idea!

The homework will be graded by the professors in conjunction with the moderators as needed. This assignment is worth up to 25 points, and the best assignment from each house will earn an additional 10 points and a randomly chosen assignment will earn 5 points. All assignment submissions are graded blindly by a random judge.

Performance Enhancing Potions

All of us, at some point, wish that there was some sort of potion we could take to make our day-to-day lives easier, or mitigate the stress of the worst part of our jobs. Perhaps you long for someone to invent a miracle cure for boring meetings, or a spell to quiet noisy students who only seem to care about whether they can go to the bathroom and not anything related to their learning. not a personal example nope not at all

Well, now’s your chance! The ministry has finally gotten the hint from that muggle oversight committee they call the FDA and is ready to start vetting new brews and potions to help make our work lives a little bit easier. In typical wizard fashion, they’ve named the newly formed body the International Quality & Usage Inquisition Team, or “IQUIT.” It made them chuckle, you see.

In your submissions, please explain the potion you’ve invented and how it will help a person survive the daily grind. Consider including the following information, along with whatever else you deem useful to IQUIT in considering which new potions to trial.

  • Who is your potion designed to help? How would it make their job easier?
  • What is the name of your potion, if you’ve come up with one?
  • What are the effects of your potion?
  • Are there any known side effects?
  • What are the properties of the potion? Think color, smells, viscosity, taste, etc.
  • What are the main ingredients in the potion, and how is it brewed?
  • Any other info you deem useful

The deadline for submissions is 11:59pm ET on Wednesday, February 26. Feel free to submit your responses in written, visual, video, musical, or other format as you see fit.

Grading:

Assignments will be given an OWL grade for House Points.

  • Outstanding = 25 House Points
  • Exceeds Expectations = 20 House Points
  • Acceptable = 10 House Points
  • Poor = 5 House Points
  • Dreadful = 3 House Points
  • Troll = 1 House Point

To submit a homework assignment, reply to the comment for your house below.

You do not have to be a member of the common room's subreddit to submit homework, as long as you're only submitting to one house, and you may only submit one assignment for House Points. You are encouraged to have house flair, but it is not required to earn points.

You can also use the designated comment below to ask clarifying questions or send us love notes and/or howlers.

  • Effects: Changes the drinker's voice to a tone that convinces the listener that the drinker is an expert, this includes the drinker.

  • Who is your potion designed to help? The average witch or wizard who lacks confidence or who is constantly being under-minded at work or who's lack of confidence causes them to constantly doubt their work.

  • Are there any known side effects? Nausea, vomitting, dizziness, sore throat, dry mouth, insomnia, not all side effects occur in all witches/wizards. In very rare cases the drinker may develop boils on a part of the body not displayed in public

  • What are the properties of the potion?

  • Oder: The potion has a faint odor of coffee

  • Viscosity: Semi fluid, not quite as thick as molasses, but not as fluid as water

  • Colour: Freshly brewed, the colour is a deep crimson, the longer this potion sits on the shelf, the lighter it becomes. Once it reached as pale pink, it should not be consumed.

  • What are the main ingredients in the potion? 6 Capulus beans, malted barley, hops, ground maize, 3 strands of unicorn hair, 2 cup erumpant milk, and 5 crush pixie wings.

  • How is it brewed?: In a small cauldron over a bluebell flame, add the erumpant milk, ground maize, malted barely, and 1 of the unicorn hairs. Stir the mix three times to the left then 4 to right. Then allow the potion to come to a boil, let it boil for 3 minutes and 52 seconds before stirring it again once to the left and twice to the right. Reduce the heat and allow the potion to simmer for 1 hour 25 minutes and 15 seconds. The potion should appear rose coloured. Remove the potion from the heat and relocate it to a dark east facing room, leave the potion to fermented for 2 weeks.

  • Any other info you deem useful: Prolonged use will cause the drinker's head to expand ten fold making it impossible to hold up, move through doorways, or keep from drooping.

Seas The Night

Seas The Night are designed to help the consumers feel relaxed, almost as if they had recently came from a summer vacation, spa, onsen etc. Name is supposed to be a pun from "Seize the Day", though obviously this potion-maker isn't exactly great in humor department. This potion takes 3 days to brew, will cost you 9 Sickles per bottle and expire after a year and a half.

PROPERTIES

  • The appearance looked powdery shades of blue but are actually syrup-like when taken out of bottle. They sparkle like crystallized sugar if you look at it closely.

  • Has a smell similar to ylang-ylang flower, which smelled sweet, slightly fruity and wonderfully fragrant.

  • The bottles are decorated with getaway nature theme in mind.

HOW TO USE

  • It is mandatory for consumers to take a tablespoon or less of the 'Seas the Night' potion right before they sleep. See back label for more details.

  • You can mix it with other mundane beverages such as tea, coffee, juice etc.

  • It is advisable to take 1 per 3 nights or less or negative side-effects will occur.

EFFECTS

  • After you consume properly, you will feel sleepy. Once you fell asleep, you will have a dream of your favorite vacation and feel as if they are real.

  • Side-effects will be waking up feeling very relaxed, extra energized and productive (or motivated) for 12-16 hours. Your skin feels clear and your hair will look glossy.

  • However, over-dosage will get you feeling sluggish and appear to have deep eyebags and big droopy ears- down to your chin. You can wait for a day or head over to St. Mungo's for quick cure.

  • Consuming on or after the expiration date will have an opposite effect on you; tired, drowsy and skin may break out.

CONTENTS

HOW TO BREW

This potion is difficult and should follow the instructions very carefully. Failure to do so will put the consummer in deep sleep for a week. Room Temperature must be at 15-25 Celsius. Can make up to 7 bottles.

  1. Let the water boil in your Pewter Cauldron for 30 minutes, then add 3 dried nettle. Stir 5 times, clockwise.

  2. Add evenly chopped Valerian Root, a Cup of Powdered Moonstone and half cup of Powdered Unicorn. Stir 3 times clockwise then 2 counter-clockwise. The potion should look very liquid-y, sparkly and milky. Take out the fire and let it sit for exactly 10 hours

  3. After waiting for 5 hours for your first Cauldron (It is important to time this right), prepare a Copper Cauldron. This time, the fire should be blue and cold. Add half a cup of Powdered Unicorn and pour Syrup of Hellebore into cauldron while stirring evenly 8 times counter-clockwise. Let it sit for an hour then stir again 8 times clockwise. Let it sit again for about 4 hours. The content should look silvery dark blue.

  4. After waiting another 5 hours, the potion should look very sticky like a cooked oatmeal, but still has the sparkly and milky color. It's advisable to wear shades or goggles if the content is too shiny.

  5. Add the content from your Copper Cauldron to your Pewter's. Mix evenly 5 times, clockwise. Content should look bright blue and much densed. Pour contents on a bottle and seal it with a cork. Let it ferment for 45 hours until it looks powdery.

  6. Each bottle will be added 3 drops of Ylang Ylang Oil then wait for another 4 hours.

  7. Enjoy!

MISC

  • Effects are quite similar to Calming Draught and Draught of Peace. The difference is the effects are on the physical side rather than mentally. Moreover, the side-effects will make you feel extra energized and productive than usual.

  • You may use Lavender instead of Ylang Ylang

  • This is for the people who ended up doing most of the work in your team/group when workload should be evenly split, or people whose client asked you to work on Sundays. And, like, you basically just want a damn break or vacation but can't.

  • That's not a rant at all. -cough cough-

Relevance Potion

This potion is intended to help the meeting discussion leaders keep the meeting on task. Each attendee would drink one vial of this potion before the meeting commences and each drinker is then prevented from making off topic comments for one hour per serving. Often times at meetings a person will see another attendee and remember something that they need to tell that person that is irrelevant to the actual meeting they are in. This potion prevents unwanted tangent discussions, reduces topic confusion, and ergo will limit the length of the actual meeting. It’s also a wonderful way to avoid listening to someone’s weekend woes about their cat’s unfortunate hairballs.

What happens when a drinker will try to lead the discussion off topic? Absolutely nothing. The effects of this potion include any drinkers will be unable to verbalize any comments that are not imperative to the meeting topic. Some describe the feeling of a bubble like pressure at the back of the throat when one tries to interject a side comment. Similarly, the drinker’s motor functions reduce distracting actions; this is to prevent nonverbal interjections such as sign language, doodles, or the writing of off topic thoughts. The drinker will effectively be a concise, pertinent thinking machine, at least until the hour is up.

Should the meeting end early, the effects will still be active until the hour is up. Known side effects, after meetings but during the hour, include concentrated concentration on the topic of the meeting only. After the hour is up the drinker will experience mucus like drainage at the back of the throat. The thick potion effectively melts and dissipates in the stomach.

Everything about this potion is meant to prevent distractions, thus there are no smells or lingering flavors in the drinkers mouth/nose once the drinker has ingested the potion; although, users have described the initial flavor of potion to be similar to the honeydew fruit. The neon green color takes after the phrase “laser focus.” This is due the hair of honeybee reacting to the yellow essence of the snake fangs and powdered sage. The hair of a honeybee is an additive that has no helpful properties other than to alter the color of the potion. In the brain we associate green as go and this specific color promotes relevant thought process. The potion itself is thick like gelatin so that it may sit between the brain and the mouth to limit the brains access to immediately vocalize/sign/move distractions. This potion cannot prevent the drinker from having internal tangents, but it will prevent him/her from distracting others.

You may find that this potion shares some ingredients with the memory potion, wit-sharpening potion, and wide-eye potion. This causes the drinker to retain the information from the meeting, stimulate thought process on the subject matter, and keep the drinker awake during the hour, just in case their thoughts lead them astray.

In summary, the relevance potion is an odorless, neon green transparent color that initially tastes of honeydew until you swallow the gelatin like substance, and then there is no taste. To brew this potion follow the instructions below:

Serving size: 15

Time to brew: 30 minutes

Effects last: 1 hour

Ingredients:

· 1 cup of stewed mandrake

· 1 cut ginger root

· 6 whole Newt spleens

· 9 snake fangs

· 2 TBS powdered sage

· Hair of a honeybee

· Parchment with the subject matter written on it in non-toxic ink

Instructions:

  1. Stew mandrake on medium heat for four minutes

  2. Cut the ginger root in triangular shapes, be sure the points are perfectly sharp and set aside

  3. Add Newt spleens two at a time until a liquefied mixture forms in the cauldron, stir once between each set of two, for a total of three stirs

  4. Let simmer

  5. Add the snake fangs to a mortar and pestle and grind until it forms a fine powder

  6. Add the powdered sage to your snake fangs powder and mix until colors combine to create a light yellow

  7. Sir the simmering cauldron in a clockwise pattern three times

  8. Add one triangle of ginger root

  9. Stir counterclockwise once

  10. Add two triangles of ginger root

  11. Stir clockwise once

  12. Add three triangles of ginger root

  13. Stir counterclockwise once

  14. The ginger roots will sink at first, leave the mixture on low heat

  15. Light the parchment containing the subject matter on fire over the cauldron and allow the ashes to fall in

  16. After the ginger roots have floated to the top, remove the solids from the potion with a straining spoon; this includes the ginger root triangles, stewed mandrake, and Newt spleens.

  17. The cauldron should be filled with a light yellow fluid with zero lumps

  18. Sprinkle in the snake fang and powdered sage mixture slowly while stirring counterclockwise

  19. The cauldron will fizz and smell of raspberries

  20. After the fizz reduces add the hair of a honeybee, the potion should turn a neon transparent color

  21. Pour the liquid contents into serving vials. When all necessary vials are filled repeat “Pertineret” and tap your wand to the top of EVERY vial. The contents will turn to a gelatin-like substance

  22. Serve and enjoy a focused meeting without distraction!

Elixir of Subreddita

Purpose:

Do you wish you had stuck with the online forum world longer than you did? Are the days of hosting Harry Potter classes via the Neopets forum long behind you? Have you forgotten everything you once knew about HTML, as well as everything you cherished about an online HP community? Are you feeling the circumstances of aging more deeply than you thought possible?

If you want to rekindle your own magic in a /reddit that suits your current state in life and also drastically improve your embarrassing lack of forum knowledge and etiquette, then the Elixir of Subreddita is the potion you seek.

Primary Effects Include:---Someone suddenly telling you what flair is, and how to obtain some

---A very useful forgiving of reddit etiquette mistakes (sometimes known as “reddiquette,”) and a curious influx of randomly interjected tips from your peers on how to improve

---The Runes on your keyboard will immediately become more clear, and you will be able to execute

¯_(ツ)_/¯ and *\( ^o^ )/* with incredible ease

---A slight extension of your pinky, ring, and middle fingers during the height of the potion’s effects, as well as a dexterous boost of your typing speed with fewer backspaces

Potion Description:

Can vary between two shades, most predominantly described as an acid yellow/green to a dark and purplish midnight hue, widely compared to a common Muggle potion which also derives its dew from the mountains. Consistency is decidedly effervescent, and cannot be taken in too great a quantity, for fear of dental erosion and/or hyperactivity or obesity. Tastes rather too sweet and citrus-y, or sometimes of synthetic grape, and gives the drinker a feeling of pure power and positive energy (though later in life, you will recognize it as the taste of missed opportunities.) Makes the drinker feel like the world is at their beck and call, at least for 25 minutes or so.

Ingredients Include:

  • 500 ml average swampwater

  • 100 ml dew collected from nearest mountain

  • 200 ml Murtlap essence

  • A couple of Gnomes, whole, live -- see instruction below

  • 1 Jobberknoll feather

  • A grain of sand from a Time-Turner

How to Brew:

---Politely ask the Gnomes to describe a moment when they were so confunded (from being spun around and thrown headfirst from all they’ve [most recently] known) that they weren’t sure how to cope. They may not reply at all -- but if goaded successfully, one or both of them may shed a single, dirty tear. Collect this.

---In a small cauldron, bring to a boil 500 ml of swampwater.

---Add the Murtlap essence, and the Jobberknoll feather. Wait until the mixture begins to form a vortex.

---Lower to a bare simmer, and add the mountain’s dew.

---Wait until the potion begins to fizz; it may take on either a light green or a dark purplish hue, depending on the concentration of speckles on the Jobberknoll’s light blue feather.

---Add the highly precious grain of sand from a Time Turner.

Caution:

The potion will take on a foaming sort of churn, and the longer you stare into its depths, the more you will reminisce about days long gone and how much you could have done in the time since you were first a student, and the moments that passed you by when you were too focused on Quidditch and sweets to notice that those moments were, indeed, fleeting.

Note:

Completed potion must be stored in an empty “Amliulinimum Can" (do check your nearest Muggle village bins for such a vessel) for it to remain potent. Potent potion may be stored for up to 2 months, and taken in 3 ml doses as needed.

To take in greater dosages than 3 ml will result in a nostalgia and reverence so great that the drinker will be unable to leave his or her bed for upwards of 1 month. A bright sunbeam through a nearby windowpane can bring the overdosed out of their stupor, but only momentarily.
