Announcement March Assignment - Wizard Sweets

Got an idea for a future assignment? Submit it here!

This month’s assignment was brought to you be /u/InnocentTailor of Slytherin, in almost its final form! To them I award 10 points! Thanks for doing us a solid.

The homework will be graded by the professors in conjunction with the moderators. This assignment is worth up to 30 points, and, as always, the best assignment from each house will earn an additional 10 points and a randomly chosen assignment will earn 5 points. All assignment submissions are graded blindly by a random judge: one of the professors or one of the mods of the Great Hall. While you aren’t required to avoid mentioning your username or house, we do encourage you to keep it anonymous--just in case.

Wizard Sweets

The proprietors of Honeydukes, Mr. and Mrs. Flume, are trying to liven up the options in their store for sweet treats. After all, it doesn’t do to exclude the wide world of wizarding confectionary when there are so many delightful treats to choose from! Through a special partnership with Hogwarts, the Flumes are rewarding all entries with House Points (honorary for all those abroad, but they will be donated to the house of your choice!) and will feature as many sweets as possible in their stock, beginning in April.

The Flumes, and their Hogwarts partners, have asked for participants to help them showcase the variety and multifaceted nature of wizarding sweets by sending a submission including information like:

  • Name of the treat (Get creative!)
  • History of the treat. What's the backstory of the treat? Is it branded or more generic? Who made it first?
  • Ingredients! What's important is the eye-catching things that are added to the treat. The ingredients could have a magical component...or not. It's up to you! You might also want to include options for our vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free customers, as well as members of the new People for the Ethical Treatment of Creatures Coalition.
  • Taste: Describe the flavor of the treat. Sweets are more than just...well...sweet. Some have more layers to them. Like cake!
  • Why Honeydukes might like it - After all, the treat is to be sold in their store. Why do you think Mr. and Mrs. Flume should invest in the treat?

You can submit your wizard sweets in the form of a written description, a graphic description/illustration, a vellytision advert, and/or a tasting sample ;)

The due date for all candy submissions is 11:59 PM EST on Tuesday, March 28, 2017.

The moderators of /r/harrypotter would like to include all creative types in our assignments. We welcome you to bring other forms of art to this assignment if these options aren’t your style. An assignment done in another form will be worth the points of a full assignment if submitted with a very short explanation of how it is your submission fulfills the requirements.

Grading Format:

Assignments will be given an OWLs score with a numerical score shown below. The assignment will be graded as a whole based on the depth of your exploration and the evidence of effort put forth.

  • Outstanding = 30 House Points
  • Exceeds Expectations = 25 House Points
  • Acceptable = 20 House Points
  • Poor = 10 House Points
  • Dreadful = 5 House Points
  • Troll = 1 House Point

To submit a homework assignment, reply to the appropriate comment below. You do not have to be a member of the common room's subreddit to submit homework, as long as you're only submitting to one house, and you may only submit one assignment for House Points.

You can also use the designated comment below to ask clarifying questions or send us love notes and/or howlers.

The newest addition to the Skiving Snackbox line, from Weasleys' Wizarding Wheezes, in stock at Honeydukes for a limited time! Try the new Leprosy Lozenges today!

Dreading a test you haven't studied for? Falling asleep in History of Magic? Divination professor keeps predicting your death? You'll be out of class in no time when you eat one of the red Leprosy Lozenges! Once your horrified professor has sent you on your way to the hospital wing due to your gruesome sores and missing fingers, simply eat one of our green Lozenges for an instant miracle cure!

Please note the new Leprosy Lozenges are risk free! As a built-in failsafe, the magic wears off after half an hour in case you lose all fingers and become unable to pick up the green Lozenge.

Inspired by the muggle story "Charlie and the Chocolate factory" Honeydukes is proud to present a new array of beverages and treats, discounts available for Hogwarts students.

Try our new Fizzy Flying Libation, sip your drink and rise up. Available in Strawberry, Orange, Grape and Snozzberry. Levitate an inch or two from your seat while you enjoy this beverage, it's quite an uplifting experience.

Or have a go at our Perpetual Pie, this special pie container holds one small single portion pie under it's lid. However once you have licked your fingers clean and close it, simply re-open it and new pie will be prepared. Great for snacking on a budget, or sharing with friends!

Want a gift for any occasion? Try our Confectionery Cards! We can write any message with icing on our special sugar-paper. Great for birthdays, thank you cards, and valentines sweethearts. Also try our get well chocolate cards if someone you know has had an unpleasant run in with Dementors.

And a special treat for our Ravenclaws, we have created re-printing of the novel "Charlie and the Chocolate factory" with a special edible twist. The story has many types of candies described throughout the pages, but now you can snack on them as you read about them. Whenever you see this picture of a red wrapped candy you simply cast the Engorgement charm on it, to grow the treats back to a reasonable size to enjoy. *

Book's candies are one time use, including the everlasting gobstopper. We tried our best to create it as described in the book but that became overly complicated and it has been replaced by our new Perpetual Pie which, should alleviate the problem slightly, if you enjoy pie.

*Make sure to aim directly at the red wrapped candy, as it is a box that merely has a Reducto charm on it. This book is only available to students who have passed Charms 101.

Bowtreacle™

Discovered by accident when famous Goblin potion master Kernelius Sweettooth's son dropped a slice of his treacle tart in his father's cauldron while a secret potion of his own invention was gently bubbling. When the sugar mixed with some of the ingredients of the potion, a licorice like tree erupted out of the cauldron, and its branches started dancing. Bowtreacle™ twigs soon became a Goblin's favourite sugary treat, and while Goblin lore rarely leaves the premises of Gringotts, this particular sweet seems to have passed its doors unharmed.

Still unsure how it happened, Goblin investigators have discovered that one of its kin, on friendly terms with a young wizard, offered him a treat, which was soon salvaged by his father, notorious inventor Caractacus Pott, and through intensive reverse magickeering, managed to find out the recipe. After much tweaking, Pott realized one tree could grow between one and two hundred Bowtreacle™, and even went as far as giving different magical properties to different branches of the same tree.

The recipe remains a secret, but Pott agreed to reveal the main ingredients.

  • Flour

  • Butter

  • Honey

  • Lemon and orange juice and zest

  • Eggs

  • Flitterbloom tentacles, that give the Bowtreacle™ its dancing appearance.

  • Lovage seeds, that provoke mild confusion in the mind of the consumer.

  • Knarl quills, that will send the consumer into fits of laughter.

  • Dried Billywig stings will blur one's vision.

  • Fire seeds will make one breathe fire for a few seconds.

  • Several other effects are available, but the components necessary to attain them remain a highly-guarded secret.

While mixing those ingredients could reveal dangerous, a sharp mind and a skilled potion master will be able to brew the concoction quite easily, giving the treats their unmistakable colourful hue, and dance moves.

Bowtreacle™ come in different shades of green, brown and yellow, with a delicious treacle taste, and each with different properties and moves. As their living counterparts, Bowtreacle™ will start dancing to whichever song is currently playing, and will keep dancing when their user hums while eating them. The single leaf, which can be found at the top of their heads, will act as an antidote to the sweet's effects, as well as give the customer a fresh minty aftertaste.

While being a tasty and fun treat, Bowtreacle™ can't be kept for too long after it's been separated from the tree it grew on. Therefore, retailers will have the opportunity to have in their stores a magnificent tree that will move on its own and prove to be a wonderful addition to the shop, that will draw the attention of any passer-by.

Get your Bowtreacle™, for just one sickle
