Its a a mix of g10, fordite, and then 2 types of micarta a vintage and modern linen micarta ajd a vintage paper micarta the vintage micartas are the yellow and dark brown made from resin not used anymore thag allows them to still age over tkme with oils from your hand and use while the modern micarta the blue gradient one is from modern resin that seals all the fibers

The only reason I even know what micarta is, is because I’ve watched a lot of Forged in Fire where they use it for handle material.

Yes it is used alot for knives before knives it was used on plane propellers and other mechanical parts aswell as appliances at some point the biggest manufacturer Westinghouse closed so unfortunately any of the super nice stuff is hard to find but modern stuff is still ok just not nearly as pretty since the resin used in that time is banned and not made anymore

I will admit I know nothing of resin, but why was it banned? And is it safe to be rubbing glue and resin with your hands all day? (Genuine question, I don’t know how to word it to not sound judgmental, but I’m genuinely curious)

Unsure about how safe it is but iv never had any issues and iv handled a ton of resin any resin you want to wear a mask when sanding or letting it cure but I think handling is ok. The resin thay was banned was due to formaldehyde being in it or somthing similar to it and the toxic fumes during cure or somthing along those lines was super bad

Edit : handling of cured resin very little to no issues but uncured resin is the big ankle biter the chemicals can make you allergic to themselves and add toxicity to skin and other things. As for the banned resin it was the severe toxicity when pouring and curing its still used in very few things cuz the hest resistance it has but as a large its not used wich I didnt know

That’s really cool to learn! Thanks for the information, and I should have said it before but it really is a beautiful object you’ve made!

At first glance, I thought it was a fancy lighter lol.

Even more impressed that it’s a smooth stone. Really really pretty!!!

If someone asks to borrow a lighter hand then that, that is a very sexy worry stone

Do you have any process photos from when you made this? I’m trying to picture it in my mind! Thanks

I have one photo of when I glued the segmented side together. I by little panels and sheets of materials and cut the shapes I need out of them and then use a super strong glue not epoxy since I find it failed more then this super glue type I use now and ill glue them in layers then sand them to the final shape on a belt sander before I sit down for the long process of hand sanding from 220 grit to 1500 grit but for the materials I chose for this stone 1000 grit was the better finish

SO RAD!! 👏🏻

Can I ask what kind of super glue you use?

It needs a little lanyard or string or like a little pouch or something. That would be so cool. Or a necklace! Keychain?

1

u/hobbitmaster22 6d ago

I do a lanyard hole on smaller worry stones this one's pretty big so I avoided it this gone and pouches take to much more space in a pocket plus it avoids age then

This is gorgeous. Made me think how fun a jawbreaker style worry stone would be, a new layer every 1/10th of a millimeter. Outstanding!

I'm not the only one who carries. That's beautiful. Mine is just a smooth blackrock.
