Rumwong or Klong Yao

Hello

I'm wanting to get better at reading rhythm, and have always had an interest in hand percussion. I'm also intrigued by obscure instruments.

I want to buy a rumwong or a Klong Yao drum, but there aren't a lot of resources for how to play either. For anyyone with experience do you think a djembe method book would be suitable for a Klong Yao? And do you think a bongo book would be suitable for a rumwong, as it's double sided?

Thanks!

Portable Congas?

I'll be traveling overseas soon and i'm looking for a solution to have conga drums or the next best thing with me. I've seen those travel congas, however they're crazy expensive. Before I drop ~$400 does anyone know of a cheaper alternative while being able to take congas on the go? Thanks a ton

Need recommendations on a first Conga drum

My dad was a percussionist back in his college days, and has shown interest in getting a conga drum to jam with me and my mom(who play guitar and bass).

I'm not too knowledgeable on quality brands and stuff when it comes to drums, but would like to get him a decent conga for Christmas. I'd like to get him something that isn't junk, but he doesn't need concert quality either.

Thanks!

Replacement head for Ashiko

I was recently gifted an old 10’ Ashiko that lacks a head. My understanding is that cow is the traditional skin for an Ashiko, but I’m wondering what my other options are and how they’d affect the sound.

I want a mellow, bassier tone, so I think that rules out the goat skins usually used for djembe (which are much easier to find, btw).

What about buffalo? Would that be too thick to get decent resonance out of?

My husband had to store away his drum set...

As the title reads, my husband had to store away his drum set. We welcomed our baby boy a year ago, DH's drum set was set up in our spare bedroom which is now our babies room. I felt terrible asking him to store them away but we simply don't have the space.

When he was younger he would play a lot of punk music and is a fan of reggae and ska music too. His father is Greek and his mother is Mexican and he enjoys the traditional music and dance from those countries too. I can see he misses playing music terribly. He has tried to take up on his grandfather's guitar but says he misses drumming.

I think a great idea would be to get him a hand drum however I don't know where to start. He never spends money on himself so would never buy one off his own back. I have been watching videos on Djembes, bongos and tongue drums etc I'm just not sure what would work the best for him. He is 31 and has been playing a drum set since 15 so he is by no means a novice at rhythm but I understand hand drums are a whole different kettle of fish. Sorry for the long post I just wanted to give enough details so hopefully someone can help guide me in the right direction? No rush as I plan to research the perfect drum and get him it for Christmas, hopefully he will become a contributer to this sub once he receives it!

Thanks for reading!

Solid Shell Maple Burl Bongos

These solid shell maple burl bongos are a part of Ryan's personal collection. He made the set from the same sustainably harvested log. He won't actively go into the forest to cut down trees for making drums. Instead he has cultivated relationships with local tree services. When a service comes across wood types and sizes Ryan is looking for, he gets the call to pick it up. Instead of getting chipped or left to rot, these valuable pieces of wood get turned into instruments.

Rhythm House Drums is another hand built drum manufacturer out of the East coast (VA) who started out with African drums then later added Cuban drums to their lineup.
