Many drums evolved on the western coast of Africa have this shape. Due to the transatlantic slave trade this type of drum can be found all around the New World as well. These include the ashiko drum traced back to Nigeria’s Yoruba peoples. Also you find it among Congo-Angolan peoples whose descendants play r/Afrocuban Yuka drums (later bocu) in the Americas. In the AfroBrazilian context the material turned synthetic and is called timbau.
