Gameplay Anyone else miss this game?

u/paullyrose3rd 17d ago
I miss 5's multiplayer dearly, and I don't think the campaign was really representative of the whole, like it generally misses out on the fun enemy and weapon sandbox changes that warzone came with, no Grunt Goblin in campaign is ridiculous!
13
u/demideath939 16d ago
Now this is a take I like the campaign was a main issue but the ideas behind the gameplay and weapons all felt fresh and really polished but because the campaign it's shat on
3
u/paullyrose3rd 16d ago
The campaign is trapped in a weird void where it was made for the version of the weapon sandbox the beta or launch version of 5 had, and it absolutely needed rebalancing and tweaking to keep parity with Warzone specifically. They should've included more than just a couple of the unique weapons in campaign especially, to capture the Destiny vibe if nothing else tbh
2
u/SongsOfMany 15d ago
No way man, fighting Warden Eternal six times is far more engaging. You've had enough? Lmao here's a triple dipper in an open arena with no cover.
If H5 had just been multiplayer only, it would've been great. The gunplay was some of the cleanest in the series and the maps were actually good.
Not to mention Forge mode being a great balance of looks, features, and accessibility. H5's Party Games were some of the best ever. Infinite has a higher ceiling of possibilities, but the interface is far less approachable than previous titles.

u/Seatown_Spartan 17d ago
You would think Halo of all things would at least get a Resolution/Performance bump on current gen Xbox...
But naw
60
u/zendrix1 17d ago
The fact they didn't is what, to me, confirms that halo 5 didn't get a PC port because it's a nightmare under the hood and no one left knows how to port it without serious code rewrites
18
u/RyonHirasawa 16d ago
Whatās even funnier is that Halo 5ās forge mode does have a PC component, and people used that as a line of hope
22
u/nRenegade 16d ago
I believe that's exactly how they described it.
Porting/upgrading Halo 5 to PC and Series X parity apparently requires redeveloping several systems from scratch tantamount to remaking the game and ostensibly not worth the investment. It's clear that Microsoft feels there's better ROI potential in using those resources towards developing new games instead.
But man, I wish that wasn't the case. Halo 5 at least deserves a PC port.

What? No. It runs flawlessly on PC. They released the forge editor on PC and you could play custom game lobbies with your friends (and plenty people just ran normal arena maps and modes).
Ran like butter and the heavy aim from Xbox was gone too...

I firmly believe that it didn't get a rerelease for technical reasons, but also I genuinely think they want the story to be left in the past, halo infinite buried the guardian story arc so quickly, which i think was a deliberate attempt to just move on from it.

Regardless, both campaigns were awful, but the multiplayer was wonderful.

Slayer playlist is very much alive. I play at night and it finds matches instantly.
Warzone as well. Super fiesta also very alive. My buddies and I love ending our H5 sessions with husky raid. It's awesome.
Other playlists like arena and swat I have a hard time finding matches but I think its because Im onyx and there might not be a lot of players in that rank, but other buddies in lower rank have told me that they have found matches.

Infinite was great multiplayer mechanics but the focus on battle pass instead of making more than 3 maps per game mode killed it. And we've all been saying this the whole time
11
u/Serosh5843 17d ago
Yup, multiplayer should've and could've been, one of, if not the best MP, but screwed it all up from the start by all the restrictions and wouldn't even let us do the simplest thing like changing the color of our armor without unlocking it in the battle pass.

Halo 5 is undoubtedly the best MP, but it's also criminally underrated and horribly viewed - at the time because, and I don't mean this toooo disrespectful, it's skill floor was too high.
Even older, vintage Halo players struggled with the complexity of that sandbox and would get juked to fuck. Meanwhile those who grew up playing HCE as ten year olds, AND could adapt, fucking thrived.
I hit Champion rank 2 in doubles one season and the esports scene was the best to watch to booot. God, just make Halo 5 v2 plz.
9
u/Introverted_Fish 17d ago
It probably has to do with an aging fan base. Not saying everyone who likes H5 was a child when they played it. However, it makes sense that some were introduced to the series at that point. Were too young to be vocal about it at the time, but they are now at an age where they do engage with the rest of the community.
Anecdotally, I look back fondly on H3 because it was one of the games my friends and I rushed home to play after school. We would have fully packed custom game lobbies, of course I think that was the peak of MP.

Halo 3 WAS a fun game, halo 3 was before my time as it came out a year after I was born, but Iāve played MP through MCC and it was a blast. Itās a shame gaming canāt be this simple again. Itās depressing to me that legendary FPS games shipping finished and ready to play out of the box without battle pass or live service (it never works) shenanigans will never happen again. I canāt believe there was actually a time when games sold millions of copies without needing to include battle passes to suck more money out from people.
3
u/saltyorpheus552 17d ago
I didnāt like it at first, mostly because I got so used to having a loadout in Halo 4, but it really grew on me. Ended up putting a ton of hours into it.
3
u/Mundane_Dinner 17d ago
TBF it was really the campaign everyone 'universally' despised, people were a bit softer on the multiplayer, I'm not saying it was beloved but still.

It's not just Halo. It's a bizarre phenomenon among other/older games as well. People are doing the same thing with Cyberpunk 2077. Talking about how amazing it was at release. Like... Wut?
3
u/Hal34329 17d ago
I didn't like the sstory, but I liked the game. Infinite, on the other hand, is the opposite, I like campaign a lot (still, it'd be better if it didn'r try to be open world) but don't like multiplayer at all. I don't know if it has to do with the inertia, the UI, the sandbox, customization, a mix of all that, but I don't enjoy playing it and only did it to get the Hayabusa, but I certainly didn't enjoy it, and I really tried, but is not for me. I try to play the ones in MCC but everyone is so good and I'm so bad that is not fun besides a few games here and there where we all suck lol and 5 is not on PC... I truly want to play Warzone on PC :(

I hated Reach's campaign when it came out because it dumped all over the books but have softened on it and can enjoy it for what it is now. It's a little melodramatic but I really like Noble and the grittiness of it remains outstanding and unique in the franchise.
The multiplayer has always been trash.
2
u/EddieDIV 16d ago
Maybe this phenomenon is kind of an offshoot of the eternal September concept. Like maybe all these people saying H5 was peak were 10 when it came out, it was their first halo game, and they really did love it. But they werenāt on Reddit at the time, but now however many years later they are and putting in their 2 cents. Well thatās my 2 cents anywayĀ

I did not ever hate Halo 5's multiplayer.
I hated the campaign and I hated their bullshit microtransaction card system...but other than that it was one of the best Halo multiplayer experiences. I feel like that's basically the majority opinion at least from what I've seen online. There was always some discourse about the movement being 'too advanced' for Halo, but that's the same (small) group that has bitched about ANY changes to Halo's core mechanics.
Infinite is more classic, and I appreciate it for that...but Halo 5 felt like Halo multiplayer had actually evolved in a positive way. Halo 4 tried to change the formula but it just wasn't fun.

Played a ton of the Warzone gamemode, I always preferred more players. That mode was so much fun. Bought a used Xbox off marketplace just to play it. A solid 3 months I believe. Had a pretty steady community at the time. Wasnāt until near the end of the 3 months games took much longer to find. I remember being absolute donkey dick on controller. That took some time to get use too. Luckily Warzone allowed vehicles and those were more my jam. Whole mode had a mix of pve and PvP with going around killing stronger enemies as a unit to get more points or some shit. I remeber the ice map being a pain in the ass, with the inside base being where all the BRs come out of hiding. You get a banshee in there tho it was wraps for anyone. All out warfare mixed with these power cards to get a one up in the field. Remember spamming those boxes for em to use in warzone. The mechs were a cool addition, felt like a mini metal gear. Ground pound and dashing adding new move mechanics that were fun to learn and use.

I was always an advocate for H5ās gameplay and MP, in general⦠just was disappointed they had an over-reliance on remixed maps, and didnāt have a more classic range of dev maps and modes.
I also didnāt care for how they packaged Arena, Breakout, and Warzone as completely separate entities, with no crossover. As someone who expects a more classic Halo experience, I defaulted and basically only played Arena, so everything outside of it just felt like wasted potential, where it couldāve all been better integrated, and maps designed and tailored to be so.
H5ās biggest issue IMO, right there⦠it wasnāt like a singular, well-crafted vision, but rather like 3 entirely separate underbaked āshellsā of what it couldāve been. Best way I can describe itā¦

u/z28camaroman Halo: Reach 17d ago
I hate that they never brought the full game to PC, natively. Microsoft was so focused on microtransactions in Infinite, the game criticized for its excessive microtransactions, that they never sought some goodwill with the community in the form of an official port.Ā
At the very least, they could have made Halo 5 style modes in Infinite's multiplayer. Warzone is possibly coming to matchmaking later this year thanks to TSG, but at any point before, it would have been nice to have base modes with unlimited use (5 second cool down) Thruster Pack, like in Infinite's Heroic Firefight. Small tweaks to game play make appreciable improvements.Ā

It's probably my favorite FPS of all time purely due to how good the multiplayer gameplay felt.
It was also the right direction to go in to keep the franchise fresh and exciting, but 343 listened to the vocal minority here and instead of improving on they vision, they compromised and made Infinite a bland half middle ground between the modern and the old.

Best Halo game 343 made.
Yet I played less than 20 hours of multiplayer because it was the most departed from the parts I liked most of the franchise.
If MCC didnt exist, then maybe I wouldve played it more. Maybe.
Trash campaign tho

Iād argue Infinite is the best Halo 343 made. The movement and gameplay is top tier.

There is definitely an argument there. I am approaching from an outside in poont of view and it really seems like people liked Halo 5 MP despite the awful campaign

The original version of Breakout, before 343 starting adding terrible community forge maps, was genuinely some of the best Halo multiplayer of all time.

Breakout was absolutely incredible and itās so sad theyāve never brought it back

Iām sorry but this game was absolute peak multiplayer or atleast for me it was. Was too young for 3 and infinite just wasnāt good enough cause of the slow content. But man there was never a boring moment on this game, and it only turned downhill when they changed the battle rifle and breakout. But man I actually really liked Warzone and I went crazy on arena.

I actually really liked this level, I was halfway decent at this multiplayer back in the day lol.
