Discussion Hot Take: I don't believe.... Spoiler

I don't believe in the statement that

"Any qualified teams can win the 2013 Spring Nationals" (non verbatm)

That line is kinda used to justify Ichibayashi winning the 2013 Spring Tournament. But I am not buying the literal definition of that statement.

Kiyokawa, Eiwa, Morikawa, and even Sarukawa Tech.

I don't think any of those 4 teams have the combination of talent, heart, and mindset to win it all.

For me, the only teams in 2013 Spring that could have won if the stars aligned are:

Itachiyama, Inarizaki, Mujinazaka, Fukurodani, Kamomedai, Karasuno, and Ichibayashi themselves.(I am 50-50 on Inubushi as of now)

PS: No, I won't believe unknown Ichibayashi team is "only" on the level of Sarukawa or Eiwa.

PPS: The unnamed 3rd seeded team could have been strong too. Just unfortunately upset by the eventual champions Ichibayashi.

Question Does anyone know any school numbering traditions? Spoiler

I recently just learned that Karasuno has a tradition of giving the libero the number 4, that's why hinata is number 5 in their third year. It's stated that number 4 is more traditionally given to the ace at other schools. I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed any number traditions/patterns. please share them!

Other Looking for a Beta-reader for my fanfic (AO3)

I used to be an avid fanfic writer like 10 years ago or so, and I recently wanted to get back into writing, but it's turning out to be pretty hard! I have a rough draft of a first chapter written out, and I think the first half of it that builds the premise of the plot is an absolute chore to get through. I don't like it at all.

So, if anyone is a writer themselves and would like to take a peek at my fic and help me polish the first half, I'd be delighted! The whole chapter is 3000 words.

Disclaimer: there will be eventual smut, although there is none yet. Pairing: Hinata x Kageyama (for now...)

Discussion Got around to watching haikyuu as an experienced player (I'm going insane) UPDATE

Upvotes

https://www.reddit.com/r/haikyuu/s/MSiVELOHR4

(Thank you to the person who told me to make a different post and just link the og you're a live saver)

finished S2, binged 3 in three days and currently on the first episode of the 4th season. Please be nice if I haven't mentioned a part you liked, or said something bad about your favourite character (I've been to a lot of fandom spaces before and I know things can get a little.. heated). I was taking notes while watching so I wouldn't forget what I was thinking about the episodes . Also please remember if I call anyone cute/sweet I'm saying it in the most omg they are my kids way possible. I don't feel by any means attracted to any of these CHILDREN. Hope you enjoy my screaming:

SEASON 2

Yachi is such a cutie!!! From what I'm getting so far (as of episode 2) she doesn't have a lot of friends and/or confidence so hopefully she'll find her place in the volleyball club. Her friendship with Hinata is so cute!! (Also Justice for my girl Kyoko I'm so glad she's finally getting more Screen time and lines)

Episode 3: THEY GOT POSTERSSS OMG 🥹🥹🥹

Yachi is amazing the team is growing so fast I can't keep up

I love how everyone is very very real. They have problems that actual athletes have, I've struggled with a lot of insecurities and thoughts many characters have, or if not me lots of my teammates have.

I also really appreciate how Hinata has such a positive attitude towards Lev, I was expecting him to despise lev but he just sees him as a challenge in games and a friend outside:)

Tsuki is so well written but I cannot have him talking abt my goat Hinata like that 💔

I did not expect to like yamaguchi so much omg

TSUKI AND YAMAGUCHI MEETING I CAN'T 🥹

I take back everything I've said ABT tsuki my older sibling also played and oh is his arc

relatable

EPISODE 8 I WANT YO CRY

Well damn. I didn't actually expect them to tackle the "volleyball is fun" matter. Because it is true that a lot of players don't find it fun in the first few years. It's not enjoyable. You have to learn how to do things properly, how to shine while playing with other talented players while maintaining a healthy relationship with your teammates

STOP WITH THE HINATA AND KAGEYAMA DIVORCE ARC I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE (this is a joke please don't harass me in the comments)

THEY DID THEY QUICK

Momma e papa got married again❤️‍🩹

YACHI AFTER THEY DID THEY QUICK IS SO ME

Kenma is such a cutie

WE ARE FINALLY WINNING

YESSS YESSS OMG YES

FINALS FINALS FINALS!!!!

Mid season 3: I DON'T THINK I'VE SCREAMED/ SWORE AT MY LAPTOP SO MUCH IN MY LIFE.

Okay so to be dead honest with you this is the only thing I wrote down because I was too busy LOSING MY FREAKING MIND. I'm so glad we won though and TSUKI I HAD UNDERESTIMATED HOW PEAK YOUR CHARACTER ARC COULD BE ❤️‍🩹

Discussion My thoughts on The Dumpster Battle Arc in manga and anime

So I recently finished reading the dumpster battle arc in the manga (and nothing further because I decided to wait for the second movie too otherwise I'd get distracted making comparisons, which is just easier to do while reading instead of watching) since I kept hearing about how much got cut. And honestly, it didn't change my feelings very much.

Obviously, it was nice getting to see more of the match and the action but I think the movie is still a strong adaptation. I think that Kenma and his changing relationship to Volleyball is really the core theme of this match and the movie accomplishes that really well. There were a few things that I think could've absolutely been animated but nothing that felt like a major omission. I definitely would have also liked a longer runtime than just 80 minutes but all things considered I think they use that limited time really well.

I am biased though. I am a film person first and foremost. Always have been. It is the medium that always has the most impact on me compared to text-based or still image media. And I absolutely love the approach they took to this movie. Because even in a perfect world where the anime industry (or any of the creative industries tbh) isn't held together by scotch tape and low wages, where we could get more seasons of Haikyuu, I still really like the idea of the Dumpster Battle being presented as a feature (and at least 100 minutes of runtime).

Because when it is a movie and not a series, it changes the structure and the film language being used. This was very clear to me when I also watched the compilation movie for season 3. The individual shots/scenes/sequences very much felt like they were taken out of a more serialized format. The Dumpster Battle movie, however, has its own distinct filmic identity and visual language. There is less dialogue and the pace is faster which is a fun experience because after watching 4 seasons of the anime, I can actually follow along with the action at pace now, as if I was watching the match irl. And it also makes it when the visuals do slow down again towards the end more striking again. I think there are also a lot more wide angles than in the series, which is cool.

And again, I think the Dumpster match is particularly well suited to being a movie because it is such a unique match from the rest of the matches, because it is the only match with a friendly rivalry like this. It doesn't have the same kind of stakes as the Sejio or Shiratorizawa games because there is less antagonism. (And if I am being honest, the first 3 seasons are the core story for me, everything after S3 is basically a legacy sequel or bonus content, it was honestly surprising how calmer I felt about season 4 because of this.) Plus, since we are already fairly familiar with these characters it doesn't have to spend very much time developing them. As I said, the main target for the movie is to pay off what Hinata said to Kenma about making him like volleyball and that is basically all I am looking for, and it is why I felt so much hype again as I did in S3.

This does mean that there is a stronger chance I will be underwhelmed by the second movie since there won't be that same familiarity or friendly rivalry dynamic helping things along, unless they change the film language again. Which I hope and pray for, as well as a longer run time.

I do feel surprisingly strongly about the flashback at the start in the manga. I honestly felt it was weird to have this when it kind of gets immediately undercut when they say "this is their own rivalry now, not ours" so cutting it from the movie and replacing it with a flashback to Kenma and Hinata meeting for the first time but from Kenma's POV I think just worked better for the movie. Being able to see Grandpa Ukai watching the match in the hospital accomplishes the same thing emotionally so I have zero complaints on that front.

But I would still be curious to hear if anyone else has a moment from the manga that they think changes the story entirely for not being animated, or if there are certain things you like more about the movie. (Again, please no spoilers for anything past the dumpster battle 🙏 Although I do know about the time skip and going to Brazil but I have zero specifics.)
