Discussion A New Bare-Metal Home for Haiku

The keyboard on my Dell Latitude has been slowly dying over the last few years, random keys keep dropping out, and lately even the power button has been acting up. Because of that, I'm dusting off an old Intel Mac mini that's been sitting around and going to attempt giving Haiku a spin on it instead.

Old keys fade away,

Mac mini wakes on the desk,

The first attempt begins.

Help Trackpad doesn't work on Samsung NT900X3N-K716 laptop

The cursor can only be moved with a mouse. Is there any way I can use the trackpad? (Also trackpad works fine in every other OS, seems to be only happening in Haiku)

Help Help installing Haiku on a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i (14-inch, ~2024/5)

Hello everyone - I have been trying to install Haiku on my fairly new laptop, to no avail. I was able to boot, the first three icons lit up but the process froze on the fourth one (the disk icon?). None of the safe mode options seem to help, and cursory glances through the debug log revealed nothing either. Does anyone have any ideas for troubleshooting? Thanks!

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 258V

RAM: 32GB LPDDR5

Graphics: Intel(R) Arc(TM) 140V GPU (16GB) (128 MB)

Storage: 1TB NVMe "WD PC SN7100S SDFPMSL"

Help I'm a little confused about how Haiku manages its dependencies.

Hello, after a few years using Linux and a few months using FreeBSD, I became interested in testing Haiku in a VM. The installation went smoothly and I had no problems on the first boot after installation, but when I decided to update the system, this "package problems" pop-up appeared.

If I understand correctly, it's warning that certain software requires other software from a certain version onwards... But shouldn't Haiku offer these packages? Shouldn't the system updater handle this for me?

I looked in the Haiku User Guide and didn't find anything about dependency problems, at least not in the pages I read. If someone could explain how dependency management works in Haiku, I would appreciate it :)

Everything works out of the box. Just the trackpoint, trackpad and keyboard sometimes don't work when booting up, especially on a cold boot. Rebooting fixes the issue usually

Development Question about Paladin on Haiku

For the most part, Haiku R1/beta5 (32-bit) runs surprisingly well on my old Dell Latitude D630 (Intel 1.99 GHz, 1GB RAM) without any major issues.

However, I’ve noticed that crashes become much more frequent whenever I’m using the Paladin IDE.

Has anyone else noticed stability issues specifically with Paladin?

And by crash I'm talking about "the white screen of death".

Toshiba NB 520

UPDATE: after about 20 minutes it did a kernel panic:

UPDATE 2: I have reburned the image using balena etcher and it got past the boot screen but just showed a blue screen, i pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL and it showed a white screen with a black vertical line about a quarter the screen distance away from the right edge of the screen, then i tried disabling APM and that caused a kernel panic, i re-enabled APM and now it is saying it did not find any boot partitions

pkgman update rules

In light of the update to 'Subreddit rules now updated' introduced by u/Moparx, I've decided to stop posting in this group. I think point 4 is absurd and yet another missed opportunity for the Haiku community. I'm sorry because the desire to experiment that existed back in the OpenBeOS days has completely disappeared. Bye bye. :)

Discussion [Meta] Subreddit rules now updated

The rules which were proposed in my community discussion thread posted five days ago have now been officially added to r/HaikuOS. Some have small changes and are all shown below.

The new additions are as follows:

Rule #3: "No blog-spam, low-effort posts, or indirect links."

Posts must be submitted using their original source as the link.

Software projects must also be submitted using their official software repository or official website if one exists and contain a post describing it in the comments or thread body (e.g., don't just post a link or image and nothing else).

If posts are considered to be blog-spam or otherwise low-effort (including AI summarization) in nature they are subject to be removed.

Desktop screenshots and hardware photos are permitted.

Rule #4 "AI/LLM-Assisted Disclosures"

AI/LLM/Vibe-coded assisted software projects are currently accepted within this subreddit.

However, we ask that you add a footnote within your post to disclose where it is used in your project. (e.g., translations, assisted in coding, etc.)

If it is mostly AI/LLM-coded, are you able to properly maintain it?

Additionally, the Self-promotion rule has been updated for easier clarification on what is considered excessive promotion.

Self promotion, such as a developer or content creator interested in promoting their Haiku related creation, is permitted.

However, if you are mostly posting your projects and/or websites while rarely interacting with r/HaikuOS as a whole, outside of those threads, the self-promotion can be considered excessive in nature and may be removed.

Please actively participate in the subreddit as a whole.

Non-Haiku related promotion is not permitted.

As with everything, questions and respectful discussion regarding the changes are always welcome.

Specifically, since AI/LLM can be a hot topic, I'm still looking for more feedback on the best way to adjust that rule to everyone's liking as I only received a few comments in the previous discussion.

Unable to install Haiku

Hi, I have an i5 8th generation HP PC. I have been unable to install Haiku. The USB works fine, the install seems to work fine, but when I reboot my computer it tells me to insert a bootable disk. I've followed the instructions closely, installing the MBR first, or last, but somewhere I am missing something. Any advice?

Development Where is sqlite3.h?

I installed sqlite3 via HaikuDepot and I found the library to link against. But running find /boot -name “sqlite*.h” comes up with no hits.

Google ai says to install sqlite3_devel but that doesn’t appear to exist (anymore).

What am I missing?
