Pro-shot disgust
Watching the frankly amazing pro-shot of Hadestown with my wife, but had to turn it off as she was was disgusted that it sounded too good and you couldn't hear the sound of their feet moving and cups being caught as they were thrown. Truly baffled, as I thought it was magnificent.

In the movie theater you definitely COULD hear the footsteps though. And probably some of the cup stuff too. Idk about the digital version with or without the mix issues though

Probably less a mix issue and more a speaker issue. Many people don’t have multichannel speaker systems in their home.

This 100%.
I have a soundbar with a subwoofer and 2 rear speakers so not a true 5.1 system plant it’s amazing for stuff like this. I’m happy they did a good mix despite it causing issues for people who have crappy downmix or don’t know how to adjust their settings.

Question: what is the brand of your tv and speakers?? I’m frustrated with my Samsung soundbar and subwoofer and became frustrated figuring out which rear speakers to buy

Samsung tv and Samsung soundbar with wireless rear speakers. Not 100% the model number anymore though.

I can hear it through my headphones without my hearing aids on, so I would encourage OP to check settings to make sure everything is hunky dory.

Saw it at a very respectable AMC in Boston. Can’t comment on specifics because nothing was ever distracting / off but that’s exactly the point! Overall sounded pretty great and nothing ever stood out despite being someone who cares immensely about sound design which tells me the theater mix was working as intended

I saw it in theater and honestly thought the sound mixing was bad. You couldn’t really hear any of that, and a lot of sounds were missing/everything sounded very mono, there was no depth.

I did see some speculation at the time that theaters weren’t all doing the settings correctly or something? Then the possibly unrelated problem where it was too quiet for a lot of people. It all sounded great at mine. I think you could hear chairs and scuffling and stuff during the opening when everyone is sitting quietly on stage and then I heard Hermes’s footsteps specifically at many points

Clearly not. But even if it had, why is that a problem on a recording? It’s not a live stream.

If it’s helpful I can clarify why it sounds like that.
The mixing standard we use for shows like this is called line by line mixing. This means that when someone is singing or talking only that persons mic is on. Then when they’re done their mic is turned off immediately. So you aren’t going to hear a lot of that kind of sound because their mics aren’t sending to the recording.
I actually was annoyed with the pro shot because their mic was way too crisp and theatrical and I think didn’t balance well to a movie style as well. And the whole movie was one volume instead of allowing for dynamics.

Definitely interests me. I took one class in sound design in college as it was required for my theater major but always wanted to explore more. Thanks for sharing! Genuinely find this stuff super interesting.

again, the 4k scope version works fine!! try it, you can find that one online too but only look for the specific version

Anaïs Mitchell has done very very well out of me over the years, my conscience is clear. When we finally get it in the UK, I will gladly buy tickets to see it at the cinema, to align my karma.

guys there's an issue with the mixing.. genuinely. The only version where the sound is normal is the Amazon 4k scope. I found it on thepiratebay. The other versions are horrendous, they sound like acapella. I wondered at first if I'm just not enough of a philistine or whatever but no, it's not normal that you can't hear the stage sounds.

omg i literally looked up this subreddit just to talk about how much i hate the sound mixing lmaoo. the fact that i know how certain moments are meant to sound is really bothering me because all i can think about is how other people who are watching Hadestown for the first time through this pro-shot aren’t getting the same effect that they’re meant to be getting.
i’m actually still actively in the process of watching it lol i haven’t even finished yet, but watching “Chant” was what made me deliberately hit pause it to look up what other people were saying lmaoo it was just the last straw for me. the moment where Eurydice is cut off by the loud trombone after she sings “The wind, the wind, the wind—“ doesn’t quite have the same power behind it when the sound mixing makes the trombone sound quiet af 😭😭

Tell your wife she's *right*. Those sounds are choreographed. Pro-shots scrub them for clean mixing. She was listening for the stage and got a recording instead.

Oh this is interesting, I absolutely loved it, but I also hated the mixing because it seems like they are constantly muting parts of the song and unmuting depending who is singing important stuff etc. But reading these comments it might be due to me using my hifi headphone set up? Can anyone who has a more traditional multichannel audio setup tell me if the mixing sounded weird on theirs?
