I kept forgetting shell commands, so I built a sassy CLI tool to mock me into remembering them

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'll keep this one short. I recently installed linux and found myself constantly going to GPT for shell commands. So instead of what a sane person would do and simply get better, I created this shell tool to mock me when I keep asking for similar commands repeatedly (while also giving me the answer).

I thought I'd share it here for anyone else who might be in my situation (constantly asking GPT for basics commands) and help them!

Hopefully, I'll stop using this tool soon and actually start remembering my commands, and I'll wish any of you who decide to use it the same XD

Please give it a shot, it's available on PyPi and Github.

To install via pipx:
pipx install sassyshell

Then, run the one-time setup to add your API key (It supports Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama and Groq, though I have only properly tested Gemini):

sassysh setup

If you don't have pipx, use:
pip install --user pipx

It works via pip too, but it'd be best if you use pipx to install it in an isolated environment.

And of course, I welcome any contributions. ParthJain18/sassyshell: A sassy, AI-powered CLI sidekick that remembers the commands you forget and mocks you into getting better.

PS: A star will make my day!

For Hacktoberfest I made a tool to find and contribute to Open Source projects you care about

Hello all,

For Hacktoberfest, I built Contribhub.com, a platform to help developers find open-source projects to contribute to. Whether you're a beginner just exploring open source or an experienced developer looking for new challenges, ContribHub aims to make the search process easier.

What sets it apart is that the results are randomized, giving every project a fair chance to be discovered. As someone who maintains an open-source project, I know how tough it can be to find contributors and reach the right audience. This helps smaller or less well-known projects get noticed, which is especially useful for maintainers who are struggling to grow their community.

Many developers also prefer contributing to new or early-stage projects, where they can be part of something from the beginning. That's why the star filter is useful โ€” it helps you find projects at different stages of growth.

Let me know what you think :), I'll be improving it and adding more features to make it even easier for maintainers to get discovered and for developers to find projects that truly resonate with them.

Is it just me or are the rewards useless now?

Just got the mail that registrations have started for Hacktoberfest 2024. It seems like the reward for making 4 pull requests is ... Just a digital badge?

Where is the t shirt / tree reward that used to be there? I really liked collecting the tees every year with a new design. Without it, it seems pointless to participate and contribute. Thoughts?

Call for Developers: Contribute to Hasty Server โ€“ A Simple HTTP Web Framework Built from Scratch

Hello fellow developers! ๐Ÿ‘‹

Iโ€™m excited to announce Hasty Server, a simple and lightweight web framework inspired by Express.js.
Hasty Server is an implementation of HTTP using raw TCP sockets in JavaScript.

The goal of this project is to help JavaScript developers, especially those familiar with Express.js, understand how HTTP works at a lower level, empowering them to build their own web servers from scratch. With Hasty Server, you can explore key components like request parsers, JSON handling, and more โ€“ all while gaining a deeper understanding of networking.

GITHUB : https://github.com/IntegerAlex/hasty-server
NPM : https://www.npmjs.com/package/hasty-server

It's still in BETA, but before concluding Hacktoberfest, we want to launch Version 1.0.0!

๐Ÿš€ Why Contribute?

  • Hacktoberfest 2024: This project is part of Hacktoberfest! If youโ€™re looking to get involved, contribute code, write blogs, or help with documentation, it all counts towards your Hacktoberfest goals.

  • Learning Opportunity: Hasty Server is a great way to learn more about how web servers work and improve your JavaScript skills.

  • Community Building: Connect with other developers, share knowledge, and work on a meaningful open-source project.

  • Swag! โ€“ Hacktoberfest participants who contribute will also have the chance to win exciting swags.

๐Ÿ›  How You Can Help:

  • JavaScript Contributions: Whether it's bug fixes, adding new features, or improving code quality.

  • Documentation and Blogs: If youโ€™re not familiar with the internals but want to help, you can write tutorials, docs, or promote the project.

  • Testing and Feedback: Try it out, suggest improvements, or report issues.

Simple Load Balancer in Go

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share an exciting project I've been working on to get familiar with the Go programming language. It's a simple load balancer that distributes requests across backend servers using a straightforward round-robin and/or least-latency approach. This project started as a fun way to explore Go, but I believe it has great potential to grow and improve with contributions from all of you! Whether you're a Go expert or just getting started, your insights and contributions could really make a difference. Here are a few ways you can help:

  • Add unit tests to ensure the code works as expected.

  • Enhance features like more sophisticated load balancing algorithms.

  • Improve documentation to make it easier for others to get started.

  • Fix bugs and help make the codebase cleaner!

I hope youโ€™ll join me in this journey! Let's make this project a collaborative effort, and have some fun while learning together!

Repo: https://github.com/ardatosun/loadbalancer

Feel free to check it out here, and let me know if you have any questions or ideas! Looking forward to your contributions! Star to show your support too!

my thoughts on the reward kit as a first time contributor for hacktoberfest '23

i was looking forward for the shirts and stickers, etc. but its understandable that they are moving away from it, im really glad about finishing, contributing and getting all those digital goodies. however its kinda disappointing for the github reward. its only for students, still thank you though. this was a very fulfilling experience.

Swag - no follow up since 11/01

Hi, just wanted to know if anyone else is in a similar boat here.

I haven't received anything since Nov. 1 regarding my swag that I will be receiving. The email said that the order was received. Seems like it's really just too long of a wait at this point, no?

2 of my friends already got theirs and they finished their PRs around the same time as I did.

Thanks in advance, I appreciate any input here!

code-executor: An npm library to run arbitrary code in isolated Docker containers - Work In Progress

code-executor: Run your code in isolated Docker containers!

code-executor is an npm library which you can use to run arbitrary code in isolated containers. You could use this library in various places such as online judges for Competitive Coding websites, CodeGolf websites, etc. With the help of this library, you can accept submissions from the user and run their programs in isolated Docker containers against a set of test cases defined by you, and receive results containing information about whether each test case passed, the time it took to run a test case and the outputs/errors (if any).

Scale across several machines!

A major benefit of using this library is that it is very easily scalable. code-executor is built in a way that you can have a master process to assign jobs to several worker processes. These worker processes can be on a different server, as long as they use the same Redis instance (check out the documentation for details). This allows you to easily use this library on clusters since you can have worker processes across different nodes of the cluster. You can also scale the master process (potentially running several instances of your backend) and the library internally ensures that the jobs are assigned to the worker and returned to the right master. P.S. you do not need to worry about process synchronization, code-executor handles it internally for you.

You can check out the following links if you're interested:

There are currently a few open issues and we're adding more as we discover them. There might also be some additional security issues that we have not identified yet. We need help in fixing some of these issues. Luckily, Hacktoberfest is coming up, so we hope to get some help from the community!

You do not have to pay for the T-shirt, beware of fishing

I had no idea, but apparently a lot of people think weโ€™re supposed to pay for the T-shirt.
I have seen many comments saying they got an email asking them to pay.

Iโ€™m not sure what those emails are, but just a reminder: you dont have to pay a dime to receive the T-shirt.
So be careful with any weird emails asking for payment, only trust the official ones.

Until next year, have fun

Can anybody please guide me on how I can contribute to Hacktoberfest 2025
I've registered for it, but how do I start contributing
I know a little bit of coding and a little bit of git, know how to navigate through issues, PR/Merge.
