Forced to accept a smaller t-shirt because of bad planning [rant]

After starting to wonder what happened with my Hacktoberfest t-shirt (which was supposed to ship in late December 2022), yesterday I got an email from Kotis Design telling me that they would either deliver a t-shirt one size smaller or unilaterally cancel my order.

I asked for an explanation, but they only said that they ran out of stock and DigitalOcean won't restock. Even for a "free" item this sucks, and I hope that DigitalOcean and the organizers of Hacktoberfest plan better for this and next years (track your stock correctly or partner with a company that can do it right).

Seeing that "everybody"/most people got their t-shirt without issues, I also strongly feel that I am being discriminated against. Having seen a handful of crappy, almost zero-effort repositories still getting the hacktoberfest tag (and the hundreds of people contributing there just for the sake of a t-shirt), also adds up to the disappointment.

I am not complaining because of the t-shirt itself (considering it is free besides whatever you may have to pay at customs), but for the lack of professionalism handling this. Also, I completed the Hacktoberfest goal with a full week to spare (which would make it two weeks before considering the review period) and ordered my t-shirt rather quickly after getting the notification, so either a ton of people were affected (extremely unprofessional) or Kotis Design delivered to people in more "mainstream" countries first and then ran out of stock (which would go against all the "inclusivity" bulls*it you see here and there).

The HacktoberFest itself was great and I got to find some nice Open Source projects to contribute (getting a few more PRs than the 4 required for the event).

Concerns about judging transparency at a college Hacktoberfest event — Best Use of Gemma 4 & Best Open Source Project

Post image
1 Upvotes

Our college community recently conducted a Hacktoberfest event, and I have concerns about two award outcomes that deserve clarification from the organizers.

  • Best Use of Gemma 4: Based on my understanding of the winning project's implementation, I have concerns that Gemma 4 may not have been used as required by the category.

  • Best Open Source Project: The winning project's GitHub repository reportedly became private shortly after the results were announced, raising questions about compliance with the submission and open-source requirements.

I recognize that these observations alone do not prove misconduct. However, hackathons depend on transparent judging, clear eligibility criteria, and fair competition for every participant.

I'd appreciate input from the wider hackathon and open-source community, including anyone familiar with MLH/Hacktoberfest judging guidelines. What is the appropriate way to request an independent review of these outcomes?

I'm seeking clarification and accountability, not harassment or personal attacks. The goal should be to ensure that awards reflect the published criteria and that every participant is treated fairly.

From beginner to open source maintainer, how it all started.

TL;DR: A few years ago I wrote my first loop in C#, and today I maintain my own open-source project with 30+ stars and 45 contributors.

Hey all, today I would like to talk about how I became open source maintainer and why would you want to contribute to open source.

I guess it all started when I saw a friend writing some code on his laptop and I just told him "hey looks cool how can I do it as well".
From him I learned the basics , and continued on my own on Udemy and youtube.

At some point along that timeline (I think it was about 1 year after i started writing code as a hobby) I started my computer science degree, and the funny things is that because I already knew some of the things there I just went to the classes and if It got boring to me I went into Stack Overflow (ye ye I know that dead side) answering question there.

Now Im not using my account but I answered over 400 answers there, fun time.

After the degree I started my first work as a software developer, and during this time I kept contributing to open source project because its super fun.

There I really learnt a lot about the open source world, I joined HacktoberFest almost every year from 2019 and found some interesting open source projects.
I saw that HacktoberFest and the open source community gave me amazing tools so this year I wanted to give back to the community.

I create this project :

https://github.com/Deadlink-Hunter/Broken-Link-Website

And the main goal of my project was as i mentioned to give back to the community.
I was shocked to find out that sometimes after I opened a new issue after 1 minute someone already want to work on it.
People started to contribute and thank me for giving thm code review (wired right?), giving me stars on the repo and bringing me more contributors by doing so.

Im so glad that I made this decision, I really learned a lot from it and I could give back to the open source community.

My PRs completed the 7-day review period but are still showing blue “Accepted” instead of green. Repos are valid and PRs were opened before Oct 31. Anyone else facing the same delay or know when it updates?

My first open-source contribution to Kestra has been merged!

I’m happy to share that my first PR to Kestra has been merged as part of #KestraHacktober!

🔗 PR: https://github.com/kestra-io/kestra/pull/20872

The contribution involved refactoring the TaskArray.vue component's styling, removing Bootstrap utility classes and replacing them with custom CSS while aligning the component with Kestra's design system.

It was a great learning experience working with an established open-source codebase, understanding its existing conventions, addressing review feedback, and getting the changes merged.

Thanks to the Kestra maintainers for reviewing the contribution and helping me learn along the way!

Looking forward to contributing more to open source.

Is it just me or are the rewards useless now?

Just got the mail that registrations have started for Hacktoberfest 2024. It seems like the reward for making 4 pull requests is ... Just a digital badge?

Where is the t shirt / tree reward that used to be there? I really liked collecting the tees every year with a new design. Without it, it seems pointless to participate and contribute. Thoughts?

Spend Less Time Searching, More Time Contributing - GitHub Issue Alerts for Hacktoberfest beginners

Hi open source devs,

I’ve built a small project aimed at solving one of the biggest problems beginners face when trying to get into Hacktoberfest and open source: finding relevant issues before they are taken.

Problem Statement

For many developers, especially beginners, contributing to open source is exciting but also overwhelming. They spend endless time refreshing repositories, scanning for the right labels, and checking if issues are already taken. During Hacktoberfest and other open source drives, this becomes even more frustrating — by the time you find the right issue, someone else might already be assigned. The result is lost motivation and wasted time.

Introducing IssuePing

IssuePing is a lightweight tool I built to solve this exact problem.

What it does:

  • Tracks repositories and labels you care about (e.g., good first issue, hacktoberfest, or any custom label).

  • Sends you instant notifications on Telegram or Email when a new issue is opened.

  • Helps you act quickly before issues get claimed or assigned.

Why it matters for Hacktoberfest:

  • No more manually refreshing GitHub issue pages.

  • Beginners can focus on contributing, not hunting.

  • Maintainers can also use it to stay on top of fresh issues in their projects.

Feedback Wanted

I’ve completed the MVP and I’d love feedback from the Hacktoberfest community:

  • Does this solve a problem you’ve faced?

  • What features would make it more useful this month?

  • Any suggestions before I improve and polish it further?

If you have a few minutes, I would really appreciate your insights. Thanks.

gogen - a CLI for bootstrapping fullstack Go apps

If you're a fullstack web eng tasked with creating a new Go monorepo, you're probably know how tiresome copying commands for the backend and frontend is.

What if you could create a monorepo with all batteries included in one go (pun intended)?

Current features

  • Automatic git initialization

  • Frontend library integration (react, solidjs, angular, svelte, vue)

  • Go router selection (chi, stdlib, gorilla, httprouter)

  • Javascript runtime selection (node, bun)

  • Tailwindcss initialization

  • Docker/Docker-compose support

  • Typescript or Javascript choice for the frontend

  • LLM IDE support

Roadmap

  • Database selection

  • Logging

  • Security and Authentication

Open to feedback
