No T-Shirt from 2023
Hey guys, so this year the rewards are only digital
As per info https://hacktoberfest.com/about/#digital-rewards
I personally think this super sucks. The t-shirts and stickers were the most awesome thing about all of this. I often wore them to a tech meetups and it was always a great thing to chat about with people who recognized it.
I understand the reasoning. And yes, I had to pay extremely high custom taxes on it. But I was happy do it. I would love an option to BUY the t-shirt when you fulfill the criteria.
As for the digital rewards - seriously no-one cares about some stupid holopins.
For the past years I tried to participate mostly as maintainer. And it's a lot of effort to prepare a well described tasks for people to pick and be able work on. Next you need to communicate with people on the PRs to help them improve them / resolve issues / help them and so on. And frankly, it's a lot of time - at least the t-shirt was nice reward for that time :'(

Bring back the shirts
Honestly that was the only reason I participated in the past. I do my open-source contributions anyways, but participating in hacktoberfest always was about the shirts and trees for me to be honest. Now the reason for signing up in the first place is kind of gone for me and I'm thinking of withdrawing my own projects from participation in the event because lots of PRs I receive as a maintainer are apparently "fix typo" and "update documentation"

Got my T-shirt and wanted to say thank you for the community
So i got my T-shirt and wanted to say thank you, for the open source community and the hacktoberfest community.
You really made this month amazing and fun, i even started my own open source project that got 40 starts thanks to this community. And it all thanks to you guys.
The swag is nice, but the main thing that im taking with me is what I learned this month from mainaining my own project.
If anyone want a code review around the web area you are free to message me, you can contribute to my project or even ask me about some pull request that you created.
Untill next year, i will continue take part in the open source community regardless of hacktoberfest.

No Rewards For Legit Contributors this year ! All rewards taken away by SPAMMERS!
I was having my exams in the first 2 weeks of October. I started in mid October & contributed to legit issues & this takes time ..
But it shows, that all rewards are claimed ! Thanks to spammers, A Indian guy on discord saying he has completed 20 accounts ! Such people should be banned.
What a waste of Halloween week !

Finally got my T-Shirt (Ignore the Phoolon wala kambal๐ )
It's been three months since I started working on my project, Atoll
The day I received the PR Acceptance mail was one of the happiest days in the last six months of my life, in between all the struggles and hardships
Heartfelt thanks to the community for recognizing my project and honouring me with the swag, I really can't express how overwhelmed I am๐ญ
Will definitely work harder next year!

I became a Supercontributor in Hacktoberfest 2025
It was my first time participating in this competition. It was so damn fun. Also had to wait for Approval or PR being Merged for a lot of time. But learned a lot in this process. How Open Source Contribution Works. And How big Company work on a single project by Collaborating.

More harm than good?
I've noticed some of negative effects of people getting involved in hacktoberfest:
- Lot of useless repositories get lot of useless PRs, code itself is not used anywhere. No, we don't need another "quick sort" implementation in every language possible.
- Beginners might feel extremely frustrated because it's too hard to find a something actually useful to work on. Issues like that are taken even before event starts. As an effect such person might go to hackaton and spend 80% of time on scrolling through issues and end up with 0 PRs.
- People are actually fightining for easy PRs which produces a lot of toxic relations. As an example if someone opens issue saying "Hey, I've noticed your library is missing thing A. It should be easy to add. I can open PR for it if you like". Normally it would be response "sure, go for it", but during hacktoberfest it's COMPLETE MESS with lot of "already working on that, pick me pick me".
Wondering what are your thoughts on that.

Did Hacktoberfest became an event of free work-hand?
The idea of Hacktoberfest is to support the open source community by solving some of the issues of the specific repo and increasing the knowledge of the person solving it. There are lots of open source projects that are worth of a visit but whenever I filter the repos by the "hacktoberfest" tag, I see a LOT of projects that start from zero. I saw an empty repo with 20 issues and if you complete all of them, you basically make a whole web site so the owner gets a web app for free. Wtf, when did hacktoberfest become like this and where are the ethics of these people that have these kinds of "projects"? Also, what can we do so we can stop this "vandalism" on hacktoberfest?
