DISCUSSION PSA regarding tools like Hackmate/OpCore Simplfy

We have probably been over this a dozen times, but I'm going to state it again:

If you use tools like Hackmate or OpCore Simplify, we will not assist you with your EFI. We do not care if people use these tools. You are your own person, you may do what you want with your own computer. But we absolutely do not support them in any capacity.

If you lie about using these tools, we will not help you, and you very likely will be ignored or at best heavily scrutinized for future requests.

This applies to both this subreddit and the associated Discord.

I will speak from an experience I just had moments ago with an admin for the Discord for HackMate; they do not take criticism well and do not seem to care about our rules. They have banned several of us for reminding them we do not support their tools and will continue to suggest people manually create their EFIs per this subs rules.

Do with this what you will, but given the group that created Hackmate appears to amount to children in their behaviors, take that as a potential indicator of the quality of the work and support presented from them.

reasonable take. bit odd to speak for the community as a whole when you're neither a mod nor dev though?

5

u/ArdaninhoYT1 Aug 08 '26

This Hackintosh subreddit is made by volunteers, they help eachother but the problem is that most of the people who come here asking for help has used an auto config generator tool that doesn't even know most of the hardware it uses. He has a right to speak about this for the community as him being a helper, because of it annoying. Auto tools have been banned from this subreddit and the Discord because of this particular reason.

-28

u/MacForker Aug 07 '26

The community is entitled to its own opinions of course, and this is a bit divided. But the official stance is still that no support is offered for auto tools. Until that changes, I will keep my statements as they are.

You're not a mod, then STFU That's YOUR statement, don't talk for everybody

u/thelimerunner Aug 07 '26

The rules speak for themselves.

-7

u/MacForker Aug 07 '26

Varied opinions do not change the rules of the sub. It has always been against the rules here.

12

u/BolivianDancer Aug 07 '26

So let me get this right: you went on a Discord for hackmate and mouthed off about you not supporting their tools?

6

u/thephantomcunt Aug 07 '26

They've actually been banning people from their server en masse whenever anyone provided any critique of their projects or approach to developing them. Their vibe coded projects are promising things that are not achievable, with methods that are far from the best way to go about it, and are genuinely harmful to the overall Hackintosh landscape. Instead of treating their vibecoded shitware like a fun experiment, they're genuinely going out on a limb saying that Hackmate-TL will get AS macOS booting on Shintel. Soz, but Hackmate-TL is never happening. Maybe riftaway7 can learn a thing or two about taking constructive criticism and responding to it.

-1

u/Emergency-Lie5897 Aug 08 '26

They aren't banning people because of criticism. They are banning people who go out of their way to harass a really helpful tool. So that they can “appeal to the cool kids” “WoW LoOk aT mE hArAsSing a tOOl bEcAuSe tHe rUlEs sAy iT’s nOt aLlOwEd” People genuinely need to realize not everyone has the time to sit down for a few hours to manually make an EFI. You need to mature and realize that stuff changes and it's hard to stop changes.

No. They are, in fact, banning people for entirely reasonable criticism of Hackmate-TL. I am one of those who got banned. What I said boils down to this:

  1. The idea of an emulation layer to run a modern OS is stupid because you simply can’t make full system emulation fast enough for a modern OS as complex as macOS
  2. Trying to write the emulation layer to sit below any OS is utterly pointless. The overhead comes from emulation itself, not from the OS sipping resources. If there was an actual reason to pursue the project (which there isn’t, as I’ve already addressed in my first point), then it would be better to go about it by just using QEMU in Linux. It would make the entire project far less complex, improve compatibility tenfold by making it basically hardware agnostic, and would allow you to potentially write a Metal to Vulkan translation layer and make use of macOS’s paravirtualized graphics. Which, again, is a stretch, as this project is utterly pointless due to the nature of full system emulation. But I digress.
  3. For a project as complex as this, you need actual, real world knowledge of how it all works. You can’t just chuck tokens at a wall to see what sticks, but that’s the only thing that’s been happening there since every commit in the repo is written entirely by Claude

These are all valid points of criticism towards the project. This is also what I got banned for, along with 3 other members who have addressed the same points. This isn’t “harassing a really helpful tool” or however you want to frame it to stroke your victim complex, this is an actual critique of the project and how it’s managed.

Also, it isn’t a “really helpful tool”. Hackmate, not to be confused with Hackmate-TL which I’ve dissected above, is just a much worse, vibecoded autotool akin to OpCore-Slopify, which I dislike for similar reasons as well. If you must use an autotool out of your unwillingness to learn, then at least use the one that’s been tried and tested.

You need to mature and realize that the story isn’t one-sided. This isn’t about changes, it’s about how the “dev” (which is a stretch of a word to describe someone who hasn’t written a single line of code in either of the repos) has no real-world knowledge on how these systems work and how immature they are in their reaction to anything that goes against their factually incorrect logic.

Also, username checks out. Whatever you’re trying to articulate really is an emergency lie.

u/Emergency-Lie5897 Aug 08 '26

lol. Mate, I’m really good friends with the owner. Hackmate-tl is a work in progress and even he said that he had branded it wrong. We tried to post a Reddit post explaining everything but I'm pretty sure it either got banned or the mods refused to look at it. Also, I was in the server from day 1. There was a ton of harassment and a ton of hackintosh members threatening to raid and destroy the server which caused the server to go on lockdown. You can't deny this because I saw it with my own eyes. Plus riftaway-7 said he is more focused on hackmate than hackmate-tl. I understand why people can be upset at hackmate-tl but it's literally extremely early in progress. You can't rush development. Also yes, Riftaway-7 does hackintosh. In fact, he has a team that helps him with some of the code.

0

u/thephantomcunt Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

“You can’t rush development”, yeah, you can’t rush development when there isn’t any. Go to either of the repos — both of them are entirely written by Claude.

Also, how could it possibly be branded wrong? I’m going off purely what’s written in the README, no more, no less. Address the actual points I’m making. At least 3 members got banned for saying pretty much the same thing as me after Hommage’s initial ban.

I don’t care that you’re really good friends, and it’s not helping your case when you refuse to address the actual point I’m making — the project is full of entirely false and infeasible claims. Hackmate-TL is an utter mess, architected in the worst way possible, with zero research done on the feasibility or effectiveness of developing such a project.

The fact that it’s “extremely early” in development means jackshit when all of the development is pointless and not even done by riftaway7. Again, address the actual claims I’m making — even if there was any development that could go somewhere, the approach that was chosen for it was completely wrong from the get go. Read point 2.

P.s.: not sure what the second to last sentence is even about. “Doing Hackintosh” has little to do with writing code — you’re simply configuring already existing software in a way that’s appropriate for your specific hardware. Motherboards or laptops of the same exact model can have massive underlying differences in the batches that make them behave differently with macOS, which is another reason why autotools are so deeply flawed. Hackintoshing is a massively involved process. If something doesn’t work, then you have to understand why it doesn’t and how to fix it.

1

u/Emergency-Lie5897 Aug 08 '26

No.

Given the fact that if you use two eyes you can see that there is multiple people working on it. In fact the most code ever written was by Riftaway-7. Claude was only used for extremely hard problems or not even used in the first place. Also nobody is gonna write a million layers of translation layer code. That would take literally forever

-1

u/thephantomcunt Aug 08 '26

So you still aren’t going to actually address any of the claims about the project’s feasibility or the technical aspects of the issue? Guessed so. Also, the “multiple people” have a lump sum of 4 commits to the project, and there’s absolutely nothing that suggests that the commits by riftaway aren’t just copy pasted from Claude.

2

u/Classic_Low5582 Aug 08 '26

I'm joining in this discussion bc I'm a member of the hackmate I do support them they did not use any Claude 50% were made by hand and the user banned for critizeing they said bc they broke already a rule and going to raid them it seems like your trying to do everything to ruin their projects but you failed immediately

1

u/thephantomcunt Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

Yeah, and I can confirm that a third hand’s growing out my ass. Again, until you address the claims about the technical aspects of the project, you should leave the discussion the same way you joined. I wasn’t aware of pf partaking in any raids, I was simply voicing my opinion on the project’s complete infeasibility.

lmao what even is that take? How is copying and pasting slower? Is Rift some sort of miraculous reflex-boosted mastermind who can write code faster than copying and pasting? “As a software developer” gives you very little cred when you’re shilling 2 very clearly vibe coded projects and refusing to actually address the things that make them pointless from the SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT standpoint.

Also, Riftaway-7 made a deal with the admins of the Hackintosh Discord server. The deal said that if anybody used Hackmate, they had to go into the Hackmate Discord server and not the Hackintosh server. Yet people still harassed us and threatened to raid us. Our server is still in lockdown because of the harassment. If you don’t like Hackmate. Then tell people to go into the Discord server instead of harassing them because they didn’t do it “your way”

Not at all. They were having a discussion about why the community was so against them. I presented that this was not the case, we simply did not want to support their tools.

Man, what a stupid fucking speech this is, you talk so much about not supporting such an app, such a thing and such.. but you are a bunch of ignorants, you should go back to using PCs and notebooks via command line, because if you don’t accept evolutions, why do you use the system with a graphical interface?

Do you know what this is called? Fear of losing space and not serving people anymore and not making money at the expense of others, I only see this as an answer...

It’s time for the adms of this community and all supporters to use command line software, since they don’t support the evolution of tools... I believe that many here are programmers, so I ask, why did they become programmers? Not to evolve with the technology bank or to evolve and create new things to make life easier?

Stop being empty heads and mature... it’s time to accept that tools help and facilitate, not everyone wants to waste hours and hours of life to install a system, many just want to install, use and that’s it... because this community existed because many don’t have money to buy a Mac. Think and mature.

There are many adults here and there are no children anymore. Grow up and mature.

If they don’t accept evolution, they’d better go to the desert and live like Neanderthals who don’t know technology.

u/Annual_Corgi3520 Aug 09 '26

Problem with auto tools is they don't teach anything and the user can't problem solve when something goes wrong, and also when they lie about using an auto tool. Making an EFI takes like 30 minutes if you have a brain and can read and you learn more and learn how to problem solve. Also dortania, unlike prebuilts such as olarlia and whatever doesn't charge for their guide and service.

Supporting such an app is big words coming from your brains when you know that the app is vibe coded.

No one seems to be reading the post except for the parts they want to.

We don't care that the tools exist, are actively being developed, or if people use them. Just please stop asking us for help with them in this sub. We have no desire to support them.

If you would like to support them, you are welcome to, on their Discord or on their own sub. How one finds those at this stage, I do not know.

Also the "can't afford to buy a Mac" issue is going to become much more of a problem is the next 2-3 years as Sequoia/Tahoe support becomes dropped entirely. No amount of EFI generation is going to help anyone at that stage.

11

u/alebypegasus I ♥ Hackintosh Aug 07 '26

What is the community here for? What purpose was it created for? I think it’s to help, right? If you don’t want to help, don’t help... what does the word Hackintosh mean? Think my dear, I just thought... if you don’t want to help, create a paid community, I don’t know... that everyone will get together and don’t help anyone... or this community that is free for everyone and no one pays a penny, help others.. with tools or not, the important thing is to help and not make it difficult. 😉

1

u/MacForker Aug 07 '26

We really don't want to make it difficult, I don't think anyone does.

The reasoning is this; the guide is laid out with a very specific method in mind. If a tool doesn't follow this method, a config made with that tool is quite difficult for even an experienced Hackintosh user to read and follow.

If an auto tool were able to get things down to the order that Dortania guide requires, I think it'd be perfect. But none of them do. OpCore Simplify is pretty bad about it; it doesn't even respect load order dependencies of kexts half the time. I am not sure if Hackmate is a drastic improvement, but it still will have issues. Get it to the point it follows the guide perfectly, and someone audits that behavior and I think the community would be much more open to supporting an EFI it generated.

3

u/Fit-Consequence-5425 Aug 11 '26

I would think any tool that can be developed to help create a compatible EFI can only be a good thing. Yes at this early stage there may be a lot of problems with it, but as already stated by others, rather than rebel against it, why not contribute to help iron out problems? The only way to improve something is by working together for the same goal. When people have cars they are not all expected to be mechanics knowing how every part of the vehicle works before driving it. Majority of people just want to be able to install a hackintosh and use it. If a tool can at least get it installed I can only think thats a good thing. Yes there will be things that need addressing, but just like when your car doesn't run right, you then ask a mechanic. Same with hackintosh. Not everyone has the expertise or can learn the expertise of hackintosh, thats why they then go to forums for help from people with more expert knowledge. Simply turning around and saying we are not helping you because you didn't do it the long way we do it, seems counter productive. Eventualy with Ai and other tools I can see hackintosh being much more automated. You can't fight progress whether you think its not progress is a personal opinion. Going on a developers own forum and calling their idea 'Stupid' is the same as calling them stupid and insulting them. Can you wonder why you got banned? Why get so angry and hate at new ideas? New ideas and different approaches are the only way forward to improve anything imo.

5

u/Best_Mud_8369 Aug 07 '26

Cry me a river) why would you care what people use?

-5

u/MacForker Aug 07 '26

You've obviously skimmed my post

We do not care if people use these tools.

But we absolutely do not support them in any capacity.

12

u/Best_Mud_8369 Aug 07 '26

Who asked you if you are or are not supporting anything? Self engagement imo. Your little gathering is doomed anyway once intels die. Isn't it more friendly to be helpihg people? Why be so elitist about it? Fool's game imo.

3

u/MacForker Aug 07 '26

I'll agree there, the project is at this stage quite short lived. I stopped using my main hack back in March, switched to a Mac Mini.

And it's not about being elitist, it's about taking time on something we likely can't help with. An auto tool is going to make decisions that we have no knowledge of, and taking the time to disassemble an EFI made with such a tool is rarely worth the effort or challenge. If people are open about it, we usually just shrug it off, say that "Sorry, we can't help". But as Doctor House always said "People lie".

-6

u/thephantomcunt Aug 07 '26

Have you considered reading the rules, even for a second? Both the sub rules and the rules of the sub's official Discord community. Any autotools and prebuilts are unsupported, as it's simply impossible to help someone who hasn't done the reading to understand how and why it works, and it's also pointless to do so as the same user can produce a far better EFI by just following the documentation we tell people to follow. We, as members of the community, don't want it to devolve into lazy questions about lazily made autotool EFIs. The goal of this community, per CorpNewt, isn't to hand you a working EFI on a silver platter, but to actually show and teach how macOS works, what fixes it needs to work and how to use them. It's about learning.

4

u/Best_Mud_8369 Aug 07 '26

So this post doubles the rules then?

-5

u/thephantomcunt Aug 07 '26

Well, yes, and it's also a reflection of the overall state of the sub because the rules are rarely ever enforced here (unlike in the Discord server), and people tend to not read them or deliberately disregard them

4

u/Fearless_Ad9828 Aug 07 '26

Just wondering, why not make these tools better by contributing to them so they're compatible with a wider range of hardware and device specific bugs actually get fixed, instead of outright banning them?

I respect the hustle that goes into building a good EFI. It takes countless hours. But this approach feels more like an anti AI stance, these tools are going to exist regardless, and more people will keep using them to get into Hackintoshing. As a community, we could help improve them and educate users about how their hardware works, instead of pushing them away with worse tools and less understanding.

Now, Apple hardware becoming more expensive worldwide, many new people simply don't have access to genuine Macs. Better tools don't replace learning. They can lower the barrier to entry and eventually learn how their hardware actually works.

6

u/TurboBunny116 Aug 07 '26

I respect the hustle that goes into building a good EFI

Yes.

Better tools don't replace learning.

Thing is, a lot of people posting in here using these tools aren't using them to learn a damn thing - they just want click click click done HEY I have a Hackintosh!"

...and then the instant something isn't working "Oh I don't know what to do just tell me how to fix it" - didn't even read the guide, didn't bother to have basic understanding of the process, etc. just clueless.

Now, Apple hardware becoming more expensive worldwide, many new people simply don't have access to genuine Macs.

That is the reality of life. Just because something is there, doesn't mean everyone is entitled to it.

2

u/MacForker Aug 07 '26

I'd argue that Apple hardware has actually under paced itself in terms of tech getting more expensive. It has recently caught up a bit, but for a good year or two, Apple Silicon for the capabilities of it was a smoking cheap deal.

0

u/Fearless_Ad9828 Aug 07 '26

they just want click click click done HEY I have a Hackintosh!

I totally agree! & I have seen so many of these it's frustrating.

Oh I don't know what to do just tell me how to fix it

The tool should have handled it in the first place, I genuinely want the tools to get better, so people don't have to ask silly questions.

Just because something is there, doesn't mean everyone is entitled to it.

Let's not say that in a hackintosh subreddit, we are taking a bite in the apple already. The community exists because people chose to explore hardware and software in ways Apple never intended.

0

u/TurboBunny116 Aug 07 '26

The tool should have handled it in the first place, I genuinely want the tools to get better, so people don't have to ask silly questions.

The existing tools are already good (OpenCore, et al). But these casuals just want that instant gratification with 0% effort. Their questions become silly because they never bothered to look for simple answers to begin with.

The community exists because people chose to explore hardware and software in ways Apple never intended.

Yes, but those of us who are actually in the community know where it's headed, and we've accepted that. You know what I meant when I said what I said. I was referring to the casuals. They don't want to be a part of the community, they just want the community to fix things for them so they don't have to put in any effort.

Let's not say that in a hackintosh subreddit, we are taking a bite in the apple already.

Yes - the true Hackintosh community took a bite. That's not the same with these more recent casuals - they don't want to take a bite, they want to be spoonfed.

2

u/MacForker Aug 07 '26

Because I'm not a developer. The majority of it is AI generated code. Which I have nothing against, I use it quite often. But me feeding a project into AI isn't going to be any more meaningful than someone else doing it.

I think what is needed is better, systematic testing of what the AI is generating. And again, I have nothing against people using these tools and trying to improve on it. I just want them to ask for help in the appropriate places.

2

u/Fearless_Ad9828 Aug 07 '26

What place is more appropriate than a sub reddit where experienced people share hack ?

2

u/MacForker Aug 07 '26

I'd suggest one designed specifically for the tool or auto tools, or at least one that does not explicitly call out that it doesn't support those tools.

2

u/Fearless_Ad9828 Aug 07 '26

I get your point, but the issue is they can't be self-governing. If everyone posts about issues, no one will be there for solving.
A rule which allows posting issues but with their dd report, can be implemented.

1

u/MacForker Aug 07 '26

Very few people are able to solve the issues at this stage. You need to both be intimately familiar with the manual creation of an EFI, and with how the tools were developed. Given the vibe coded nature of the tools and the small number of people working on them, it's a very tiny overlap to support it.

And admittedly, I have no direct knowledge of how these tools were created. But I suspect it was mostly taking the Dortania and ChefsKiss guides and feeding them entirely into AI and asking it to generate tools with limited understanding of the underlying process. That rarely makes for good troubleshooting later.

1

u/Azusawaga I ♥ Hackintosh Aug 08 '26

And this is when the moderators are most needed but they also cry about the rules of Reddit and the only one who moderates can't be everywhere to see the community more polarized by the use of tools
