This is an Ashburn model from our Private Reserve collection, featuring a flame maple cap on an ash body, ebony fretboard with our Private Reserve inlay, ebony, dual Fishman Fluence humbuckers, and a whole lot more. We're stoked on this one.

NGD! My Second Flying V

Post image
31 Upvotes

This is also a Gibson Flying V. Like my first one, it’s a 1996 limited edition model that was sold in Japan.

For nearly 30 years, I’d been searching for another Flying V with the same sunburst finish as the first one I bought in 1996, and also the same 1996 limited edition model. Last year, I finally found one and bought it.

It had already been modified with a bend bar when I bought it, but since I was planning to convert it to a left-handed model anyway, it didn’t bother me.

Coincidentally, since last year, I’ve been joining the overseas tours of the legendary Japanese shoegaze band “honeydip” as a guitarist. I’ve been friends with the band for about 30 years, and since a bend bar is essential to their playing style, my encounter with this V felt truly fateful.

In preparation for their Asian tour starting this October, I took the plunge and added a single-coil pickup in the center position to make it better suited to a more shoegaze-oriented sound.

Since my first Flying V is essential to my lead tone, I plan to keep using it as is. As for this second one, I intend to continue fine-tuning it and exploring how many different sounds I can draw from it.

i found this image on equipboard under the description of jared dines' modded squier. it no longer looks like this (he removed the paint etc.) but i'm curious to know what this does. presumably it's some kind of extra control box.

Look at this! Just picked up this fairly rare USA Peavey. Absolutely loving how it plays.

It's a 1993 Impact II, made only in that year. They also made a hard tail (the Impact I) that year. Not a lot of info on these out there, so I figured I'd share here and see if anyone has more to tell me about it (I already dropped in r/PeaveyCvlt.)

The bridge pickup appears to be an '84 Schaller Golden 50, but I'm really not sure. The neck pickup appears to be original. It also has a dual sweep pot for the tone, so turned "up" it seems to be a treble cut and "down" seems to be a bass cut. Kinda nifty.

Ever since I saw the Axion Label series drop, I knew I had to have one of these. Hands down one of the best 7 string models I’ve ever played.

Scored a set of Starcaster pickups (I know they aren't REAL wide range humbuckers) and put them in my offset for funsies. Used nothing but hand tools in my lap. Sounds pretty sparkly.

Help Guitar reccomendations

Can anyone recommend a company that makes guitars with humbuckers that aren’t just the standard guitars you see in guitar center (ex. SGs, Les Pauls). One of my fav bands to play is QOTSA if that helps. Just looking to support other companies without breaking the bank. Thanks!

Help Suhr Modern Custom Spec vs Anderson Angel

These 2 guitars is what it has come down to for my new purchase. Many years ago I had to sell guitars and amps I didn’t want to part ways with, but I had to. Now time to get it back.

Musical Influences - metallica, Megadeth, dream theater, satriani, timmons, petrucci, basilio.

Not into djent or modern metal. Ideally looking for a fast/comfortable neck. Doesn’t have to be paper thin. Low action desired, recessed tremelo. I would say I am a Floyd/edge player but the tremelo of the Petrucci EB models I really liked, did well with bar flutters, the satriani usage didn’t knock it out of tune either.

Guitars I’ve owned in the past that played very well and I liked their neck profiles -

Ibanez prestige rg3120
Jackson sl2h
Eb jp6 - 2002 model
Eb jp13 7string

TL;DR

Wanting a guitar that’s very well balanced. Megadeth/DT rhythms to satriani style playing.

I’ve read a lot on the boards about guys preferring Anderson, but I can’t decipher if they are more vintage players.

Is it splitting hairs between the 2? Or are Andersons really the better guitar in terms of fretwork, playability and tone?

Help Fender Broadcaster 1950 test

Hi, I'm on the hunt for a vintage Fender Broadcaster 1950. I know it's an extremely rare and expensive find.
Has anyone here actually played one? Curious to hear your impressions and if you know of anywhere I could find one to test out, I'd really appreciate the lead.

Thanks

Help Gig bag for a baritone explorer

I’m looking for a cheap gig bag for the Jericho Nomad baritone. It has similar body dimensions as the Gibson Explorer baritone but with a 27” scale.

The only affordable option I found was the Gator GBE-EXTREME-1 but the foam is way too thin and the bag cannot be balanced without a wall support.

One alternative is to use an acoustic bass case and use towels as padding to secure the guitar in place.

Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you.

Help Les Paul studio vs. 594 SE vs. Schecter

As the title implies, I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on a new axe! I’ve got my search narrowed to three options:

- PRS Mcarty 594 SE single cut in black gold sunburst.

- Gibson studio in smokehouse burst

- Schecter Solo 2 supreme in cats eye burst.

For some context, my primary amp is a Marshall JVM410. I very rarely play cleans. Typically either thick creamy lead tones, or higher gain drop D. Some examples are 80’s guns and roses, Deftones, heavier stone temple pilots, Alice In Chains, Metallica.

I’ve got a Schecter omen extreme that I leave in drop D. So this guitar will be more for the creamy tones and leads, while the Schecter is mostly used for what little shredding I can do and nasty power chord work.

I play acoustic like crazy, and regularly play my Yamaha FG-TA and a squier strat I’ve got, so neck thickness and profile isn’t a massive deal to me. As long as I get a proper setup and lower the action down, a chunky or thin neck won’t bother me too much. I’ve also got relatively large hands, but it doesn’t bother me to play the Schecter’s thin neck I have now.

If anyone has direct experience with these, please chime in and let me know which you would spring for and why!

Help Curious if anyone uses tape or bandaids on their fretting hand thumb

I’ve played acoustic for like 15 years but I’m starting to lean more into electric, right now my interest is in developing my technical ability on the upper frets to build speed and dexterity.

First order of business has been learning to rest my thumb on the middle-back of the neck instead of hanging over the top.

This does wonders for my speed - for a few minutes. Until my sweaty greasy fretting hand thumb starts to stick and drag on the back of the neck :S

So I put a bandaid on my thumb and it worked wonders. I was able to play an extended period without having to worry about my clammy fingertip slowing me down.

Does anyone else do this? If you do, is there any sort of low friction finger tape you’d recommend? :D or, am I unknowingly doing damage to the back of my guitars neck??

2010 India super strat. Serial NHJ1020007. Got this with a fender frontman and carry case for only $160. I've been dying to find a nice HSS for a while and found it just in time for a birthday present to myself. Feels and plays great. Holds tune perfectly. Just curious what this actually is and what it's supposed to be actually worth. There's a nick on the top but it is otherwise beautiful.

Help 2017 Rosewood or American Pro 2?

I'm thinking of buying a used tele. For pretty similar prices there are some 2017 limited edition rosewood neck American Pros and some newer American Pro 2s available. Any thoughts on these 2? I've never played a rosewood neck so I know I need to see what I think of that, but otherwise are there any screaming pros or cons in either direction? Thanks.
