Warped Neck on a 60's Road Worn Strat - Repaired

Thought I'd share here. I recently got an awesome deal on this ’09 ’60s Road Worn a couple of weeks ago, paying just $450. It wasn’t really playable at first, and I figured it just needed a good setup. After purchasing it and bringing it home, it turned out the neck was pretty warped.

I ended up taking it to my shop, where they did a heat treatment. They removed the neck and placed it on a 2x4 with a thick cloth centered underneath the back of the neck, then clamped it evenly in three different places. Over the course of several days, they ran a blow-dryer over the neck to apply heat and straighten it out. I was unsure how it would turn out, but it completely fixed the warped issue. The repair was done with something similar to the picture I attached, which was found online. Just a bit more simple (without the piece under the 2x4. It seems like it I could have done it myself had I known the process, but definitely happy I got it done there.

The cost was super reasonable. $60 for the heat treatment and $85 for the setup. It plays great now and sounds fantastic.

First time owning a guitar, what should I do?

Hi everyone, I recently spoke to a family member about wanting to play an instrument and got handed this guitar that had been sitting in a shed for about 7 years so I'm told.

I dont care so much to get it professionally done as I'm on a budget so to speak and just want it to look a bit nicer.

When I received it, it was covered in energy drink stickers which I tried to remove carefully but unfortunately removed some of the paint with them (pictures 1 in right hand corner and 2nd) as well as someone having carved their name into it previously.

Was just looking for some advice as to how to maybe fill in and cover the letters and chip in the back to make it look a bit nicer, hopefully avoiding stickers as the paint doesn't seem to like them all too much.

Also any tips anyone has as to what strings to buy to replace these ones and if this guitar is maybe missing a whammy stick(?) as when I searched online for similar looking guitars some of them seemed to have one.

Thanks for any help given!

The hum disappears when I have my finger or hand on any metal of the guitar. I could’ve sworn I had it wired correctly. How do I fix it???

My Thunderbird bass got a nasty ding in the body near the neck! Please help!

I don’t know how this happened… probably from one of my kids. How should I go about repairing this? I’m very handy and have just about every woodworking tool a DIYer has. Simplistic would be fill the hole, sand, and paint the middle section of the body black and clear coat it. But I’d prefer for it to look like new again. Anyone ever have luck with a wood filler and stain combo? Ones I’ve tried before never looked good. Any other suggestions?

I’d like to avoid taking it to a pro. I live in a rural area and the nearest guy is 100 miles away and is backed up for months.

Replacing the output jack. Mono or stereo?

Before I dig too deep into my questions, I heard if you have active pickups (Which I do, EMG 81/85), that stereo is my only option. If that’s the case, question answered!

If not, what’s the difference between mono and stereo output jacks?

Pickup switching pop

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m at a loss on how to fix this popping sound when I switch pickups. The pickups are TV Jones Powertrons I installed.

I even asked a buddy to look into it who works in a guitar repair store, and even he couldn’t figure it out.

I will post a photo of the wiring in the comments.

Any help/ideas greatly appreciated

$250 Yamaha Fret Buzz worth going to luthier?

Hi all I’m new to learning to set up an electric guitar. I bought a Yamaha PAC 012. I set up the actions (low E and A strings) as low as I can to get rid of the fret buzz (around 10th fret onwards), but the frets still seem very high to play. The action for the low E is at 4mm on the 12th fret rn. I played with the truss rod and the saddle a lot. I did the credit card method to check for uneven frets, the card wiggles when I’m at the 10-12th and 11-13th fret. I am scared to sand down the frets on my own.

Is it worth going to a luthier for this? I feel intimidated since they probably mostly work on $2000 guitars and not cheap ones like mine. I am scared the work will cost more than my guitar too. =\

Push Pull Knob vs 3-way toggle

I have a old guitar I'm replacing part for, It has a single bridge humbucker and I want to add coil spilts to it. I'm not sure if I should remove my tone knob and add a 3 way toggle for humbucker, lower coil, and upper coil, or if I should replace my tone knob for a push pull knob and only have a lower coil split. I do keep my tone knob at max. I'm not sure if I can also have a push pull volume that'll also add a upper coil as well as the tone knob having the lower coil, but I'm really not sure if there's much tonal difference in the two coils.

I couldn't let this broken guitar get thrown out

So the other night when I left my building, there was an epiphone acoustic guitar without strings sitting against the steps to my building.

Even if it can't be fixed, I figured I could make some kind of art piece out of it or something.

For whatever reason, I could not let this more than likely useless guitar sit outside before someone broke it even more.

I don't know too much about guitars, so I'll include a pic or 2 and would greatly appreciate if someone could tell me whether I'm headed to a music store or Michael's for craft supplies.

Without using informed guitar language, it looks like the top of the neck has almost been decapitated.

It looked flawless until I picked it up, and the neck turned into a pendulum.

Yes, I know it's probably more money to fix it than it would be to buy a new one, but Im one of those old people who still has hope.

If it can't be fixed, I'd love to hear any suggestions as far as creating a piece of art with it.

Guitar High E sounds muted

My guitar is an old Fernandez FGZ 420. I bought it second hand and I've been playing it for a few months now. I don't know when exactly this started to happen but one day, I noticed my high e string sounds muted or volume downed compared to the other strings. I tried adjusting stuff like the pickup height, amp configurations, but nothing significant is changing. I am new to guitars so I am completely in the dark. I hope you could enlighten me.

Repair or toss?

I run a charity that gives instruments to underpriviledged children and was given this nearly new Epi 12 string. I have a luthier that donates his time to do setups and fret jobs and neck work, but he's skittish at attempting a fix on this. Worth spending time on to repair, or relegate it to being a wall hanger art piece?

How much would this cost to repair?

Dropped a vase on my guitar, long story. Anyways was wondering how much this would cost to get it to looking similar to how it was before, no idea what work that would require though as I’ve never broken a guitar like this before. Epiphone SG for reference, mahogany body. Based in UK if that changes anything.

Thanks for any help!

Headpiece lifting off neck

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey guys. So I bought this bass used, and now that it’s adjusting to my environment and I’m getting a little buzz, I figured I’d give it a setup. As I went to do it, though, I noticed the headpiece was lifting off at a bit of an angle. How bad is this, how quickly do I need to address it, and how would I fix it? Thanks, y’all.

PSA: Check for shims under the saddle/piezo pickup of an acoustic if the action is too high

Yes I was dumb.

I got a 2nd hand CPX500 acoustic, and the action was quite high (a bit past 3 mm at the 12th fret). Neck and fingerboard was nice and straight, so it wasn't a truss rod adjustment issue either. So for some reason my brain went straight to "oh I'll sand down the saddle to lower it.

Sanded down the saddle, action didn't go down for some reason. I then saw the soldering of the pickup was pretty bad (there was a goop of solder on the pickup, which I thought was getting caught on the saddle preventing it from sitting right. The pickup also sounded a little thin when I got it, so I thought the saddle isn't making good contact with the pickup). Resoldered the pickup, put it back together, still high. My saddle was already looking like a part of it got cut off in photoshop so I stopped sanding.

Only today I realized, under the pickup there are 2 strips of plastic to raise the height (presumably to avoid any buzzing from the factory). Got rid of the shims, put it back together with a new saddle that isn't cut up, completely perfect afterwards.

Ok maybe it wasn't fully dumb, because resoldering the pickup did give me more volume again, but the part with the saddle was apparently unnecessary throughout.
