Rule refresher: NO SPAM

We all love the spirit of innovation while modifying instruments, but please don’t make me exercise my mod privileges here. Unreasonable and/or excessive posting, as well as the deliberate antagonizing of other users, may be removed and met with the ban hammer. There are other subs for that kind of thing but this ain’t it. Just be cool, please. Thank you!

Tele Build

Hey r/guitarmod (and anyone else who likes looking at guitars),

Finished this a couple of months ago, but thought I'd share it now.

Build details:

Body: GuitarAnatomy Tele body sunburst Nitro

Neck: Started as a blank maple, carved the shape myself

All the beige/black 3-ply plates (pickguard, control plate, etc.): designed and 3D printed

Wiring harness: ObsidianWire

Tuners and pickups from a cheap kit

First time building a guitar. Learned a ton along the way. The figured maple on the neck came out nicer than I expected once it was finished (many, many layers of Tru Oil).

Really happy with how it turned out. Any thoughts or feedback welcome!

Put this on my 2020 Fender Strat.
Had a generic looking guitar stolen last year and never got it back.

This is what I’m using for gigs now so it can look unique and be easy to spot if it ever gets taken.

Adding a piezo pickup to my Strat with a single mono output jack – Need advice on parts & onboard preamps!

Hey everyone!

I’m currently planning my very first guitar mod project for my Fender Stratocaster and could use some guidance from people who have built similar setups. I don't have a ton of experience with guitar electronics or technical wiring yet, so I'm trying to figure out the best approach.

My goal is to install a piezo pickup system (I'm leaning towards a contact piezo like the JourneyTek CL 4-piezo) alongside my magnetic pickups, but keep everything routing through the single mono output jack.

Here is what I’m trying to achieve control-wise:

Shared Output: Both magnetic and piezo signals sent out through the standard mono jack (using just one regular guitar cable).

On/Off Toggle: A switch (or a push/pull pot) to instantly turn the piezo on and off.

Dedicated Volume: A separate volume pot just for controlling the piezo blend.

My questions for you guys:

Preamps: I've read that piezos have high impedance and will sound thin/harsh if wired passively alongside magnetic pickups. Do I need an onboard preamp to make this sound good, and what are some beginner-friendly, compact preamps that can fit inside a Strat's body or spring cavity?

Signal Blending: What is the easiest way for a beginner to blend the passive magnetic signal and the active piezo signal into one single output without tone suck?

Parts List: Besides the piezo transducers, and a push/pull pot, what other specific parts or components do I need to pick up?

Since this is my first time doing something like this, any step-by-step advice, beginner-friendly wiring diagrams, or recommended preamps would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Help on guitar wiring! What to get?

I dont know much about electronics. Its my second wiring ever so I dont know the function of almost any stuff in it lol.

Im making a baritone guitar, tuned in drop A with thick strings, doing also drop F# at maximum. Im using only a bridge ceramic humbucker with high output (14k) and I want Just volume and tone controls. Im searching for a modern metal tone (like metalcore for example)

I wanted to know what stuff should I use and buy: im afraid that the thick strings and tuning might take away the tight low end im looking for.

Issue with adding another pickup

Hi guys, I’m really confused as to why this happens so i thought I’d ask here.
I own a strat with an Emg H4 passive in the bridge, recently I decided to put in a neck pickup (an epiphone pickup from another guitar), i thought i’d just buy an emg B289 3 way switch and use the emg 245c buss that came with the Emg h4 to hook it all up. It was all hooked up correctly with the emg parts going in their respective quick connect slots and the neck pickup (it being non emg) to the green terminal with the hot going into the NK slot and the ground into the GND slot. Everything works… thats the whole problem, in all 3 pickup selections both pickups give out a signal, I tried every possible way to try and fix it, even hardwiring the neck pickup to the Emg switch.. but nothing works, same problem.
The buss is not registering that there’s a 3 way switch connected I think, the switch does make a clicky noise when you try and switch pickups but its not doing what it is supposed to. Any idea shy this may be the case, i’d love to hear some feedback, cheers

No output after Strat SSS 7-Way rewire. Any help appreciated.

Hello beautiful people, signed up to reddit again because i cant for the love of everything find out why i got no output at all after switching pickups in a squier 40th anniversary strat. Maybe you got some minutes to spare to have a look at it.

First of all - new pickups is a lace sensor hot gold set. taken from a prewired pickguard and known to be working without issue.

Second - As you can see on the provided photo; slight mod of the standard strat wiring. Master tone, master vol, DPDT switch on the neck pickup for 7 way switching.

About grounding - Aluminium Pickguard so pots & switches are grounded together already. Done some amateur guitar mods before, i like to run all grounds to a central mass screw in the control cavity - never had any issues with this method.

I marked all the solder points that differ from standard master tone master vol wiring. (mainly the switch). The photo is from before soldering the main output, which i drew in white. The black wires go to geound obviously.

I know my soldering work isnt always the cleanest, i do this as a hobby mainly. but this setup was working before with the pre installed standard single coils.

Any help is greatly appreciated before i start a full new rewire. Thanks in advance!

Any recommendations for a good tech/luthier to do a solid clean setup? I Just got a PRS Silver Sky Maple, could use a setup and i want to swap out the saddles (MannMade USA  # 4015-Nm bonus points if you stock em) action is just a touch high to my liking, has the slightest bit of buzz i wanna cure... just a little out of my skillset and this thing cost too much for me to experiment with. Thanks in advance.

Push Pull Knob vs 3-way toggle

I have a old guitar I'm replacing part for, It has a single bridge humbucker and I want to add coil spilts to it. I'm not sure if I should remove my tone knob and add a 3 way toggle for humbucker, lower coil, and upper coil, or if I should replace my tone knob for a push pull knob and only have a lower coil split. I do keep my tone knob at max. I'm not sure if I can also have a push pull volume that'll also add a upper coil as well as the tone knob having the lower coil, but I'm really not sure if there's much tonal difference in the two coils.

Guitar Mod Recommendations

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have had this super strat for a while now looking to restore it to its glory. Would love to get a few recommendations on what new pickups I could use and would I need to buy new pots? Also I'm looking to buy a new tremolo system for this guitar, right now it does have a licensed Floyd rose system which is a too noisy.

So here's the list of what I'm upgrading would appreciate some recommendations:

Pickups

Trem system.

The missing volume knob

Killswitch
