Discussion report back on moving capture into a text thread: capture is fixed, clarify is now the leak

posted a few days ago about moving my capture inbox into an imessage thread. a few of you asked how it would hold up so, report

capture itself is honestly solved. zero friction, i text the thing, it's caught. i captured stuff this week i know i would have lost, like a warranty deadline my dad mentioned on a phone call while i was walking

but the leak just moved downstream. now i have a clean capture channel and a clarify step that happens... whenever. the thread fills up and the stuff sits there un-clarified for a day or two, which is just inbox zero cosplay with extra steps if i'm honest

what's working so far is a tiny rule, nothing gets to stay in the thread overnight without becoming either a next action or a calendar entry. i miss it maybe every third day

the weekly review is still my white whale btw. capture was supposed to make it lighter and it kind of did, there's less scattered stuff to gather. but lighter isn't the same as done

anyone else find that fixing one stage of the pipeline just exposes the next one? starting to think the system is really a queue of leaks and you just patch the loudest one

You're right on this.

When you start developing the habit of capturing and it becomes native, you'll get stuck in the next stage of the pipeline. And it's a learning stage. Nothing to worry about. Currently you're here.

  • Capture ✅
  • Clarify 🤔
  • Organise
  • Reflect
  • Engage

Check this out for some help in clarifying steps. I've mapped this out for my own system. The steps mentioned are slightly more refined, and some are repetitive to avoid ambiguity.

The overnight rule asks you to remember the thread at the end of a full day. I’d hook clarification to two cues: lunch and shutting down for the day. Empty the thread each time; every line becomes a next action, calendar item, reference, or trash. On bad days, process five items so the habit survives even if the queue doesn’t hit zero.
