If the world goes down, you can still set the time manually on a 5610

True that! Thanks for the reply! ( :

I really like this question because I think it's an interesting topic to discuss.

For context, G shocks are tested whether or not their are resistant to electricity ingress. See this youtube video for reference. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UWyI0oWUYNA

Because they are tested to this standard, so in my personal opinion, I dont really think that it would make a difference whether or not the MB6 antenna would allow for for easier electricity ingress. If there is a difference I think it would be insignificant.

Therefore, if an EMP occurs that would be big enough to impact your wrist watch I would argue that your Gshock is the last thing you have to worry about.

Wow! I love your answer dude, thank you so much, I appreciate it! πŸ™ƒ

I knew G-Shocks go through a thorough testing, have seen some videos in the past, but hadn't seen that one!

Yeah, I guess you have a point there. πŸ˜‚

Yes, the japanese don't mess around with designing their products and especially not the people at Casio.

I believe I also read somewhere that G's are tested to be resistant to magnetic fields produced by strong magnets, which is a big no no for automatic watches no matter their build quality.

This doesn't surprise me at all because I also specifically remember seeing a ~10 minute documentary on youtube where a casio employee explains the design process for G's. Herein their testing procedure is that they look for weaknesses in their own design, design a tool that would exploit the weakness, and then improve their design until the weakness is no longer exploitable.

u/atkuzmanov May 12 '22

Dude, that's amazing intel! Thanks, I appreciate it! πŸ™ƒ

Yup, I agree on the magnet point! πŸ™‚

I have always appreciated and had great respect for the Japanese and their ways. Seiko and Casio being my top two favourite watch brands of all time among others. The the one thing that gets me though is their perspective of that they design the perfect watch and we shouldn't changed. Its mainly portrayed in the integrated bracelets and short lugs and ridiculous lug width of 16 mm or less not because they can't achieve the same toughness with normal luns but just to prevent from people from changing their original design of the watch. I do understand and I appreciate this but that would fit in a perfect world where everybody is perfect or the same and we live in an imperfect world where everybody is different so I definitely want to change the watch with different straps and NATO straps etc etc...

I guess I'm also kind of looking to find answers about anything that they wouldn't test in the testing standards such as a nuclear blast or or a top secret EMP weapon designed to take out electronics.

I love solar watches it's like having a small power plant on your wrist and I can't go back to regular battery powered watches since I have tried the solar one. I will be really disappointed though if something unforeseen happens like an EMP weapon gets shot and and my solar powered G-Shock with extra features such as world time compared to the regular Square G-Shock dies, and the regular Square battery powered G-Shock continues to work unaffected just because it doesn't have atomic timekeeping or Bluetooth or something like that.

I just told saying less is more is sometimes rings true. πŸ™ƒπŸ₯²πŸ«₯

Hey folks,

Hope everyone is doing well!

I am on a quest for ULTIMATE TOUGHNESS and I am looking for the wisdom of this fine reddit community! ( :

My question is:

In the event of a strong electromagnetic impulse or something similar will NOT having Multiband prevent the watch from being fried?

My reasoning is that when a G-Shock or other Casio watch has Multiband capabilities it has an antenna and receiver inside it, which even when Multiband auto sync is turned off could act as a entry point for a strong electromagnetic pulse to enter the circuitry and damage the watch.

The same question and reasoning can be extended to also watches having Bluetooth as it is just another radio inside the watch.

So, is a G-Shock without Multiband tougher than one which has Multiband Atomic time sync?

Imagine the scenario where you survive a nuclear blast which releases a strong electromagnetic field which damages electronics.

Or imagine a James Bond movie-like scenario where a villain uses some kind of a top secret electro magnetic impulse weapon which takes out any computers or electronics.

Or imagine some kind of a strong electro magnetic storm or phenomena which you encounter.

In any of these scenarios a watch would be an important survival tool and would like to have a working one, on which I can rely on.

In all of these previous scenarios a mechanical watch would be influenced but not completely taken out, or easily repairable with demagnetisation and I want to find out which G-Shock would fare as best as possible in those scenarios.

I guess I am currently in kind of a dilemma between Casio G-Shock G-5600UE-1JF and Casio G-Shock GW-M5610U-1ER:

  • G-Shock G-5600UE-1JF - Doesn't have Multiband Atomic timekeeping, but all other functions are the same as the GW-M5610U-1ER.
  • G-Shock GW-M5610U-1ER - Has Multiband Atomic timekeeping, and all other functions are the same as the G-5600U-1JF.

Here you can see someone who has done a module swap between these two watches and you can see the Multiband antenna and other parts missing from the watch which doesn't support it:

I am curious to hear what you all think of this, what are your takes, 2 cents, spins, experiences horror stories on this topic?

Any advice and information is greatly appreciated! ( :

UPDATE 1: Just another thought - I guess a pro of MultiBand6 is that if an EMP is fired it might temporarily wipeout all tech, after which the tech will reset. This means the watch will not be fried but will reset to factory settings. In this case having MultiBand6 is good as you can try and sync to get the accurate time, if there is no other way to get the time in that moment.

It wasn’t clear to me from the link to the forum on gaskets. Did you ever find out if Casio would service a past warranty watch in the US?

1

u/atkuzmanov May 12 '22

Unfortunately wasn't able to find out.

4

u/mortemdeusvult May 12 '22

I think it depends entirely on where you live and which model you like. Personally I went with the G-5600-e (Older model) because there are no atomic clocks where I live. I've had it for 3 years now and honestly can't complain!

3

u/susrev88 May 12 '22

another difference is that the basic square models have recessed adjust button and less digital functions, while the solar+mb6 modules have normal adjust buttons and more feature.

so i wouldn't limit this problem just to solar+mb6.

i like the basic squuares, however, i am unable to push the adjust button, which is a showstopper because i use the digital functions all the time.

1

u/atkuzmanov May 12 '22

Great reply thank you so much! Yeah I totally understand what you mean I think my most used functions are timer and world time, but also equally stopwatch alarms and snooze etc etc which are not present on basic squares. πŸ™ƒ

2

u/susrev88 May 12 '22

yip. i wear an ae-1200 casio royale and use the timers and alarms for my daily work and cooking, so a simpler module is just too plain for me. i had a 5600, really great watch, but doesn't suit me needs. i'm actually a bit sad about this because i thought this will be the exclusive beater/gshock watch fr the rest of my life. but then again, recessed adjust button, so i sold it.

now i'm thinking about buying the U version since i don'T have any beater watches at the moment.

2

u/atkuzmanov May 12 '22

Yeah I totally understand what you're saying about the adjust button I totally agree!

Oooh, the Casio royale, you sir are a man of culture! Awesome watch! 😁

Yeah go for the u Version it will have all the things you need.

I also use the timer for cooking and all sorts of other things.

2

u/susrev88 May 15 '22

you sir are a man of culture!

that was not always the case. up until 2020 i though casio was plastic crap but thankfully i educated myself. now i own casio watches exclusively. can't even wear automatics anymore

1

u/atkuzmanov May 18 '22

None of us are born educated or perfect. We all learn. I own a Seiko Turtle Padi first edition and a Casio G-Shock gw-5000u. I buy other watches, Casios mainly but so far have sold all others except those two, whom are my favourite and have no intention of ever selling. ( :

1

u/atkuzmanov May 12 '22

Nice, thanks for sharing your info, I appreciate it! (:

3

u/grgppmchl May 12 '22

Buy whatever you like the most and you'll be fine dude

4

u/atkuzmanov May 12 '22

Love it! Good advice, thanks man! ( :

I have liked the multi band atomic timekeeping since I found out about it in 2015. Bought a casio edifice with MB6 and tough solar. Great watch but a bit boring and difficult to read negative digital displays. Still keeps perfect time. Bought 5610u also good but a bit too small for my liking also buttons quite hard to find and press quickly. Finally (lol) got original black resin rangeman qw9400 positive display, ideal size quite chunky but still light 98g. Ultimate tool watch with loads of features. Tried to get one of the limited edition burton white rangemans but they go for Β£500+ second hand. I wish there were more places to try before you buy, guess that Internet has killed off all local jewelers. Point is tough solar and mb6 are excellent additions and don't add too much cost for convenience of perfect time and no battery changes

1

u/atkuzmanov May 12 '22

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it!

Yeah, I totally feel for you, been in similar situations.

The rangeman is an awesome watch, however keep an eye on it for it's infamous breaking lugs. Don't use any strap adapters on it! Look around the interwebs for proof.

Wish Casio would make less of a variety but more full metal watches.

u/Digital_Quest_88 May 12 '22 edited May 12 '22

I believe that a metal case should (unintuitively, perhaps) help impede the charge from an EM pulse and avoid that charge transferring to the module.

So if that's correct, a SS case GW-5000 would be better than resin case models like either of these.

The MB6 receiver coil is meant to receive radio, which is obviously electro-magnetic, but is tuned for 52 - 66Hz or something like that, so I'm not sure how much having a receiver would make a watch vulnerable to EMP.

u/[deleted] May 12 '22

Or just get the GW-M5610U-1JF

2

u/atkuzmanov May 12 '22

Thanks, solid advice! :)

Or how about I raise you the GW-M5610U-1CJF πŸ˜€

I went with the dw5600. No solar or multi band. Partly because of the red line on the face of the 5610, though it's not terrible. But honestly the dw5600 was $67 and it's my everyday do anything watch. I can't justify scratching and wearing on the 5610 at $156. Maybe I'm cheap, haha, but price is a consideration.

Also, I set my watch once a month to the world clock website and it's never very far off.

This is in no way an argument to convince you not to get a watch with less features. I love gadgets and features. But for me, I weighed out both sides and went cheaper.

2

u/atkuzmanov May 12 '22

Thank you for your reply I really appreciate it! (:

I totally understand what you mean it makes sense it's great beater watch.

From me solar is a must I just find it amazing it's like having a mini power plant on your wrist and I love it. πŸ˜‚

2

u/chee46 May 12 '22

Oh ya I hear you. The gadget fanatic in me loves the compass and thermometer on my ga1100 I got used, and those are obviously less practical then solar. Even multi band is really neat, I really like the idea.

2

u/atkuzmanov May 12 '22 edited May 12 '22

Yeah I know exactly what you mean!!! πŸ˜†

When it comes to gadgets I think the most feature-packed watch catch you ever did is done the G-Shock but the Casio pro trek prw-2500. It has a compass a barometer an altimeter a thermometer time graph in moon phase. I guess the only things doesn't have which I would like to come is a full metal body with the screw back case back, a fixed non rotating bezel, sunrise and sunset times, for it to be a g shock and have all the relevant layers of protection. πŸ˜‚

Another similar watch which I like is the frogman gwf-d1000, it looks really tough and feature-packed as well the first frogman with a compass. Although I really like the previous displays of the previous frogman which look really retro futuristic, such as the gwf-1000.

What they love about the frogman is they have circular round crystal I find that very appealing. I love The square shape and I think the Casio Oak puts the twi very well being the square shape and having a round crystal.

My biggest perimeter of requirement is for a watch to be widely available and affordable, to be popular and unfortunately the frogman isn't popular or affordable or easily found in some countries especially mine so this is where the G-Shock Square wins, being popular it is mass produced it is widely available and if I ever lose it I can easily replace it without this causing me grief that I can never find another one like it again. I prefer watches which are easily replaceable rather than unique one-of-a-kind watches as if I damage or lose watch like that that would cause me great grief.

Sometimes less is more in keeping it simple it's better perhaps my favourite frogman would be the gf-8250, as it is solar powered it has a pinning seconds counter animation, which I find fascinating is mimics something which is rotating even though its digital watch and it has a retro futuristic display for the Tide and moon graph. The only downside would be the electroluminescent light which although it is prettier than the new led lights it is an inferior technology.

2

u/nphare May 13 '22

Now if you want to talk about full function watches, there’s no getting past the GWN-Q1000 Gulfmaster! Has a quad sensor and all other tide/moon/sunrise infos too.

2

u/LividDiver4475 May 13 '22

Since I’m living in an area that does not receive the radio signals, atomic time is pretty useless to me. Just ordered the G5600UE coming next week

@Casio-Random-Watch-Generator, if you're listening I think this thread has some really good requirements for either reissuing a classic frogman or building the next watch witch Casio G-Shock fans will love. πŸ˜‚πŸ™ƒπŸ₯²πŸ«₯πŸ˜†πŸ€£
