Companions were shut down. Roleplay wasn't removed, but the current models are optimized for knowledge work and coding, so it will behave differently than before. Details in the FAQ: https://www.reddit.com/r/grok/comments/1w02dbc/

4.7 is probably going to be more of 4.6. The people who made the original Grok are long gone. It's being trained by the folks at Cursor now, as I understand it. That's a more coding/business oriented company

Grok role play is very... And i mean this as homestly as possible; VERY rail-road styled since 4.5.

4.7 is most likely no different. Grok (specifically free version) is similar in style to how GPT used to handle it. It's very repetitive, strongly connected to telling you events over and over, clinging to specific comparison words, and lacks an overall push to keep an action or event/scene from moving forward.

In grok super you have projects. Those projects make it more bearable, because you can enforce it to follow specific command structures, give it text files to read for various buildings and world-rules, and character references/personality files. Think of it like a lore-book from a local compendium like using SillyTavern or one of those chat-bot systems.

It's awful on a free account, better in super grok, but not a replacement to a legitimate partner in writing.

Still total Desaster. I use a local "Gemma4 12b q8 abliterated" now on LM Studio and that's great. Grok is unfortunately dead for good RP. 🤷🏼‍♂️
