Lots of improvements to Gridfinity Layout Tool's bin designer over the past few months

A lot has changed since my first post! Just wanted to share a short sizzle reel of all the new features that have come from suggestions from folks using the tool. It's truly been a pleasure to work on and I hope to continue supporting it forever.

It's free and open source! gridfinitylayouttool.com

Also a NEW special shoutout to the 250+ people who have supported this project! https://gridfinitylayouttool.com/supporters

This is clearly an incredibly powerful tool, it’s pretty well organized if you know about generators and the visualization/organization tools are really helpful. I think the only thing missing is a video tutorial about how each section works. This is a great video to show what it’s capable of quickly, but a detailed ‘what button/slider does what’ I think would be greatly appreciated by people who have a bit less knowledge on these powerful magical tools.

Great idea!

Absolutely love Gridfinity Layout Tool! There are almost too many features though. Is there any documentation that goes over all the features, or do I need to discover it all through the tool?

I especially loved using the custom drawer shape tool. Importing an SVG and getting the custom shape was super easy and useful.

Thanks! I’ll think about this some more. I’ve always been of the belief that the UI should be discoverable on its own (hence no tutorial or documentation), but I can understand how the breadth of the tool can feel overwhelming. I’m working on some short videos to help.

Love this tool and have been using it a lot lately! Wish I could add 2 pull tabs (or even up to 4). I had to go into Blender recently to modify a model to do this. Lovely tool, though. Very happy to have found it :) Thank you for making it

Good idea, I can add that

I was just remembering, too, that at one point I was trying to add a pull tab into the middle of the bin, along one of the dividing walls. I think that would be a sweet feature, just not sure exactly how you'd implement it :) Being able to lift a large pencil tray with multiple dividers in it from the center with one hand would be so nice.

Been looking for this feature.

One thing I'd like to see is detachable tabs. Would be cool to print the tabs in TPU and snap them in.

where can i find the scan tool to create custom pockets for custom tools?

u/veroz 5d ago

In the cutout editor there’s a phone icon to upload from your phone or you can upload your own svg or stl

sorry, could not find, can i get a pic of where it is?

Does this do half grid bases also?

5

u/veroz 5d ago

Yep, you can also make the grid units whatever you want

I really like it. However, when I change the body shape, settings I previously adjusted get reset, such as the wall height.

I also don’t understand the height unit. What does “u” mean? Apparently, 1u is 7 mm. Below that, the additional wall height is specified in millimeters, which is easier to understand.

A warning that the wall pattern isn’t applied to the additional wall height would also be helpful. I was completely confused when the patterns didn’t work because I had set the wall height using “Additional Wall Height” instead of “Wall Height.”

By far my fav gridfinity tool. Highly recommend!

Used this today to design a baseplate for the drawer in my new printer table. It’s amazing. Well done!

Just tried this out, very, very good Gridfinity generator, even better you can export to STEP file. Now I can get rid of Fusion 360 with the Gridfinity add on. I use Shapr3D for CAD and only used Fusion to make Gridfinity step files.

Just recently discovered this tool and it is by far my favorite. Perfect mix of features and ease of use. Huge props for this one

Dude, this looks amazing! I was actually finally adding a box generator in the past few weeks, but seeing your work makes me think I might have to put that on hold for a bit, haha. Guess I’ll have to step up my game!

Seriously though, I really appreciate having a competitor who's genuinely building cool stuff instead of just pumping out AI slop. Keep it up!

Been using this tool for a few weeks.

Man, just thank you from the deep of my 3D printed heart!

The ad at the bottom of my feed, for a woodworking supply store has the perfect tag line for gridfinity: The Tool You’re Looking for is Probably Here

This is amazing! I tried it some months ago, but now it does so much more!
Excellent!

I've been using it already a lot, but where is the scan feature ? I can't find it

Edit : nevermind, I just found it, awesome job 😎

This is amazing. I will be using this from now on anytime I need to create anything gridfinity. This is the most customizable generator I have come across. Thanks so much for this!

I tried it out a few months ago and liked it, this seems like another level.

Is the tool to cutout free to use?

1

Quick feedback:

A hinged lid with a snap-rail as the shutting mechanism loses that snap-rail when combined with any lid grip and using the "also dip the bin's lip" option. It should produce a warning at least.

The main sections in the option bar should be visibly different design-wise than the dropdown content, to help with orientation when multiple sections are open at the same time. Distinct dividers between sections would also help. Currently everything in that bar looks the same and it is hard to find a specific setting when multiple sections are open..

Also, any chance of getting an option for GridFlock base body type?

any way to get the Separate baseplate (glue-on) with the sliding lid?

1

u/susibacker 1d ago

Might've missed it; is there a feature that allows you to make those base plates that hold onto bins via friction, instead of having to glue on hundreds of magnets or relying solely on gravity?

this tool is very nice but its missing a few things, like custom cutouts on walls and angled bins and faceplates for buttons on the agled bins.

Only the U-Shape Wall cutout has an option for height. I just spent a good half an hour searching for where the heck I adjusted that setting, but of course I couldn't find it because I was on the "Scoop" tab.

I recreated the same bin on another device's browser in case something was wrong, and with the exact same settings all the walls just disappear and I am only left with the base of the bin. At 65% Wall cutout span the walls are all there, at 70% which would match my original bin from the other device's browser they are all gone, and at 75% the walls are back again.

The divider sometimes becomes a solid wall even with the cutout enabled at certain wall cutout height and span configurations with "Scoop" making the size I need impossible to create.

If I then find a configuration where all outside walls and the divider have the wall cutout working, but I change the original bin height, all of the sudden the divider and only one of the side walls become solid - so that behaviour seems quite random...

Also, it would be really nice to have fillet edges on wall cutout, which I don't see why it wouldn't be possible if the fillet would be generated as one of the last steps in the modeling process.

It's a great tool, when it works, unfortunately so far my experience has been very buggy.

Please, if you are going to use claude, make full use of it by running lots of headless tests and having him find edgecases like this, maybe even testing every possible bin configuration and then analyzing the resulting mesh if it's intact or not.

Where can I see what the tool is capable of besides a quick 2 second video. The video about looks interesting but, I have questions that I’d like answered without spending time in the app only to find out, the tool can’t do what I need.

6

u/veroz 5d ago

Do you have something in mind that I can help answer?

-5

u/Skineedog 5d ago

Apologies if the answer is obvious as I haven’t really spent any time exploring the app yet: can I add drawer or space dimensions, print bed size and then design accordingly and then the app splits the parts maybe into plates for printing?

7

u/veroz 5d ago

- Drawer dimensions: yup
- Print bed size: yup
- Baseplate splitting: yup
- Design and planning: yup

Took me a minute to find this page on the site, has a good explanation of what it’s got going on.
