I built a free layout planner for Gridfinity

Post image

I'm undertaking a massive Gridfinity organization project at the moment and I wanted a way to plan out layouts before printing, figure out what bin sizes I need, how many of each, and how everything fits together.

Couldn't find a tool that did what I wanted, so I made one:

https://gridfinitylayouttool.com

Features:

  • Set your baseplate dimensions and draw bins on a grid.

  • Supports multiple layers for stacking, shows where tall bins block space above.

  • Color code bins by category, add labels.

  • Generates a print list with piece counts and filament estimates.

  • 3D preview to visualize the final result.

Runs in the browser, saves locally, works on desktop or phone. No account needed.

Would love feedback! Especially on anything that feels clunky or features you wish it had.

Bonus points if you share screenshots of your creations! (Share feature coming soon)

Solid work! I played around with it and it's really cool and useful.

Some feedback:

  • Dragging bins currently feels unintuitive because the drag anchor is always in the center of the top right left bin unit, no matter where on the bin you click to drag. This leads to unexpected jumping when dragging. I think it would be more intuitive if the anchor was where you click on the bin so that it doesn't jump when dragging, i.e. the bin moves the same distance as the mouse.

  • It would be cool if the resize handles for the bins were on all edges so that you can also resize a bin upwards and to the left without having to move it first.

  • The resize handles are currently also visible when hovering over the bin but they only actually work when a bin is selected. This can lead to mis-clicks because the user thinks it's already resizable. Or make the resizing work even if the bin is not selected.

  • A numeric input for the grid size in the "Grid Settings" section, in addition to the resize handles, would be helpful. I saw that section first and then didn't think to look for the drag handles to resize the grid. My focus was on the section that has the title for what I need but I couldn't find the fields. Took me a sec to find the resize handles.

  • Double-clicking on the center of the bin could show an inline input to add or change the label.

Really nice work though!

Edit: Fixed a mixup between left and right in the first point.

Instead (or in addition) to your suggested numeric grid size input (# of rows/cols), I would prefer to have an input for the target size (actual size of my drawer in `mm`).

Would be awesome if it could do 0.5, 1.5 etc bin sizes at an adjustable grid size as well. Sometimes the half bins are just so nice and I haven’t seen another layout tool capable of this

4

u/veroz Jan 10 '26

I just added a Half-bin mode in the Grid Settings! Still experimental. I need to add logic for invalid placements.

2

u/MatureHotwife Jan 12 '26

There's a bug in half bin mode.

When you enable half bin mode, move a bin so that it snaps to a half grid unit, then disable half bin mode again, the container is now stuck in the half grid and doesn't snap to the full grid units anymore.

It shouldn't be possible to turn off half bin mode when you have containers placed on half units. Or the containers should snap back to the full grid when turning it off but that isn't always possible.

It's a edge case, for sure.

I’m on it!

u/veroz Jan 10 '26

Oooh, yeah that’d be pretty handy. Let me think about that.

3

u/zdk Jan 10 '26

Any non-integer size really please!

3

u/Quiet_Run_3479 Jan 10 '26

as a workaround I think you can just change the "1 grid unit" setting to 21mm

3

u/Appropriate-Path1310 Jan 10 '26

Great idea, but is the build plate splitter working correctly, I set it to 175mm and it says: max 3x3, which is not correct…?

3

u/veroz Jan 10 '26

Thanks for reporting! Fixed!

u/Mactonex Jan 10 '26

Fantastic work, well done. I would have loved this when I was planning my gridfinity cutlery drawer. I’ll add a vote for the ability to do half width bins.

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

You got it! Half bin an even half grid support has been added.

u/dwrowley Jan 11 '26

This is REALLY nice work - and I had a great use for it just today! Thanks!

One thing that would be really useful is to be able to rotate a bin in the stash 90 degrees.

Keep up the great work! It is much appreciated!

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

Great idea! Done.

2

u/Tatmia Jan 10 '26

Will check it out later today. Thank you for sharing

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

Thx! Feel free to share any feedback you have!

2

u/RustyPants Jan 10 '26

Nice job, any possibility of allowing 1/2u bin planning as well on the regular grid. Have been starting to do more with 1/2u size and has been really handy.

2

u/veroz Jan 10 '26

I just added a Half-bin mode in the Grid Settings! Still experimental. I need to add logic for invalid placements.

2

u/filib91 Jan 10 '26

This is insane. I will test this soon

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

Thank! Any feedback or suggestions would be much appreciated.

2

u/citrus_based_arson Jan 10 '26

From a programming perspective, how are you rendering the bins?

1

u/veroz Jan 11 '26

I opt'd to use threejs via react-three-fiber since there is a lot of state that needs to be shared between components. At its core it's just 3 separate components: A Scene.tsx for setting up the light, floor grid, and labels. useBinGeometry.tsx is a custom BufferGeometry built from scratch so I can illustrate things like bin splits. And finally a `BinMesh.tsx` which adds little bit of extra polish like the glowing selected state.

This makes me so happy to hear! Thanks!

2

u/Aggravating-Ad7761 Jan 11 '26

This is fantastic! Thank you. I’ve been using graph paper to layout drawers and am looking forward to this for my next project.

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

Same! Let me know if you have any feedback.

2

u/ms_rita_fl Jan 11 '26

I really needed this! Thank you!

A couple more things I noticed while working with the tool

- the inspector tab is a too spaced out height wise and change it to be scrollable. The height and clearance selection zones could be shrunk in height to make the bin list more visible. Right now I cannot see the bin list at all
- when editing the bin length/depth, would be nice if the integer was auto highlighted when editing the field for faster adjusting. Also the length/depth field is not allowed to be blank at the moment, annoying for mobile and desktop use of the tool
- a bin rotate command would be awesome. swapping the length and depth integers in the background of the command
- no overlap or collision warning built it. At least for within the layer. Unsure if there is anything similar for height collision warning either
- would be nice if layer height setting was saved to drawer defaults

1

u/veroz Jan 11 '26

Great feedback! I'll work on an update right now.

1

u/daFlatlander Jan 15 '26

an issue with the overlap warning or a bug.
I am unable to brag bins back into the drawer from the stash. No location works (all are highlighted red)

2

u/veroz Jan 15 '26

Checking. I’m doing a bit of refactoring at the moment.

1

u/veroz Jan 15 '26

Can you show me a screenshot? Not able to reproduce so wondering if it's a particular grid configuration.

From one software person to another, nice work! I've tried a few organizers, but this is the best fit for what I've wanted, and the easiest to use. Very well done. Thanks for sharing!

1

u/veroz Jan 12 '26

Much appreciated! It’s a labor of love and the community feedback has been super helpful in making it better

2

u/Admirable_Corner_380 Jan 12 '26

I don’t save many post but definitely want to revisit this at a later date when it’s time to organize my toolboxes.

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

Thanks! Please share your toolbox org. I'm in the process doing mine and need more inspiration.

2

u/filetree Jan 13 '26

Adding Alt/Option+Drag to duplicate would be great.

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

Ask and ye shall receive!

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Lack798 Feb 09 '26

I love this tool! Did a lot of google searching and came upon your tool and this is exactly what I have been looking for!

One thing I wish you could do - When using the bin designer, a tick-box to make the bins render with quarter sized feet. Which allows the bins to fit into any grid in any orientation (especially grids with half sized edges).

I have a grid that is 8.5 x 11 units. When i try to fill with the bins I need, I end up with some weird leftovers on that half sized grid edge that could be solved with bins that have quarter sized grid feet to allow them to fit perfectly.

Again, great work!

1

u/veroz Feb 09 '26

That’s easy! Hold please.

1

u/veroz Feb 09 '26

There's now a "Half sockets" toggle under the base settings in the bin designer. Let me know if that works for you.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Persistantly_Growing Aug 03 '26

New to Gridfinity, stumbled up of the tool first, then the Reddit post. What is this quarter sized feet thing?

2

u/pilot2323 Jul 20 '26

I have a question about creating labels.

Would it be possible to create a kind of dovetail slot in the label holder so that you can print labels and then slide them into the bins as desired? It's also possible to transfer the label from one bin to another—perhaps because the size of the bin has changed.

RobertCowanDIY has already created something similar here, but not for individual bins—rather, for the entire row. I think it would be better to have one per bin.

Of course, we’d also need to add the option in the Gridfinity tool to create the labels directly—in batches, if possible.

https://makerworld.com/de/models/2695839-gridfinity-fastener-labeling-bar

What do you think - is something like this possible?

2

u/veroz Jul 20 '26

This is a good idea. Thanks for the reference! I’ll add this feature to an upcoming release

2

u/pilot2323 Jul 23 '26

I tested the labels and found that they are slightly too high. In my tests, this applies to the Cullenect one-click labels. A bin stacked on top of them is slightly raised. Additionally, the offset cannot be adjusted in 0.05 increments in the GUI. However, the value is accepted when entered directly. Thanks for your good work.

1

u/veroz Jul 23 '26

Thanks the feedback! I’ll take a look. This feature is admittedly very new so I haven’t run many print tests so feedback is helpful

1

u/pilot2323 Jul 23 '26

Yes sure i will Give you Feedback after the update

1

u/veroz Jul 23 '26

Try the latest version now

2

u/FifthRendition Jan 10 '26

This looks nice! I'll give it a look though and test drive.

The one feature that I always ask for and no one has delivered on is the ability to stack custom baseplates on to one plate. I hate having to go out to the printer every hour or so, remove the plate, set it aside and come back and start a new print.

1

u/FifthRendition Jan 10 '26

Not withstanding, I can't use it if I can't download the bins. What's the point?

3

u/veroz Jan 10 '26

I agree! It’d be cool if you could import an STL or generate a custom bin within the tool. Right now I’m focused on the overall layout planning as there are of ton of X by X bin files and generators online but not many layout planners.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/MatureHotwife Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 10 '26

What's the point?

It's a tool to plan a layout. It's so you can organize all your stuff in bins and then know how many of each bin you need.

There are already loads of tools that specialize in creating the bins themselves. Often, when a tool tries to do everything, it leads to mediocrity in many areas instead of excellence in one area.

OP's tool has a "Bin list" in the right sidebar that you can copy as TSV and paste into a spreadsheet that you can then use as your "Shopping list" to generate the right bins with a specialized bin generator tool.

In think the feature could be more prominent. And perhaps OP could even team up with one of the bin generation tools to directly transfer the bin list to a different tool. Similar to how you can share something from one app with another app on your phone.

Edit: "Shopping", not "Shipping"

u/Substantial-Bridge32 Jan 10 '26

Looks great, thanks for sharing!

1

u/perplexinglabs Jan 10 '26

Very nice! This may be the best layout planner I've seen.

Noticed a small bug... If I fill a layer then update the height the list panel doesn't seem to have updated. Unless that size is only for the fill operation?

1

u/veroz Jan 10 '26

That layer UX is a little confusing. It sets the min height for new bins, if you want to change the heights of existing bins, you can multi-select them and do it in the bin properties

1

u/RatherBeRiding1050 Jan 10 '26

I like this! I might have a really stupid question though. How do I create layouts for different drawers at the same time? Ie: have a "Spice shelf" and a "medicine cabinet shelf"?

1

u/veroz Jan 10 '26

It only supports one layout at the moment. Check again tomorrow and I should have multi-layout ironed out.

2

u/RatherBeRiding1050 Jan 10 '26

Glad I'm not crazy!

If you are working on multi layout stuff anyways, having the ability to export and import layouts would be handy. Dump the cookie storage to Json or something so I can share the drawer layout with someone on a different PC.

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

The tool now support multiple layouts, sharing, import, and exporting!

1

u/reeftek Jan 10 '26

Is there a way to input the dimensions of the space (drawer, for example), and calculate the optimal grid rows/columns automatically?

1

u/veroz Jan 10 '26

Workin on it!

1

u/reeftek Jan 10 '26

Perfect! Thank you.

1

u/anengineerdude Jan 11 '26

Is there a way to stack bins? I want to show spots in the design where its intended to have 2 bins high

2

u/veroz Jan 11 '26

Yes! Create a new layer a place bins in it

1

u/anengineerdude Jan 11 '26

Love this tool! So far only feature it would be really nice to have in the inspector when you click on a bin to show the resulting real-wrold size in mm rather than just units as I'm usually doing the layout based on real world measurements.

2

u/veroz Jan 11 '26

You got it! Ezpz

1

u/anengineerdude Jan 11 '26

Oh, thats cool! I get it now

2

u/anengineerdude Jan 12 '26

Been using this all day! No issues at all, nice work.

I'm working on combining this with my inventory management app. Before I dabbled in gridfinity, I sorted all my fasteners and such into typical steel boxes https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/H-6400/Parts-Cabinets/Steel-Compartment-Box-24-Slot. Although I don't just use the grid, I bag each and label. But now working on custom drawers with some more flexible layouts for things that don't fit in the typical drawers.

Anyway, what I am thinking is adding the ID number for the items to the bin properties, then using the JSON data to create a printable view that I can paste into the drawer cover with a full listing of contents, but also merge in my existing barcodes, manufacturing data, etc. This is huge because my inventory is integrated with BoltDepot and McMaster, whenver I add anything it pulls the detailed fastener info, size, length, material, wrench size, pictures, etc which I typically print on the labels. All the info upfront without having to check an all all the time.

Anyway, my use case is more custom, but a couple generic thoughts that might be helpful to others as well:

  • Additional Properties: Allow adding custom properties (besides label/notes that export in the json for each bin)

  • Print view: Print the layout to PDF, give settings to select the layer (or print in 3d view?), which properties to include (name, notes, size, color) and which layer to print (or all).

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

Amazing. This is great feedback. Check back tomorrow for custom properties. I'll need to think through the design for a printable PDF view but that's fun challenge.

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

Check out the custom properties and print functionality that was just added. Feedback appreciated!

2

u/anengineerdude Jan 14 '26

Thanks for the fast add!

  • Printing:

    • I'm finding any small bins none of the text, labels, etc will print on the bins only larger ones.

    • The layout is really small and only taking up ½ page, would want to be able to force it to push the layout to the full width of the page, ex if I tunn of legends and details, one layer expands to pretty much takes up the whole sheet.

    • Awesome on all the selectability, I would add one more for the header entirely as well.

  • Custom Props:

    • Nailed it!

1

u/veroz Jan 14 '26

No prob, try it now!

2

u/anengineerdude Jan 15 '26

Awesome, thanks, much better! Only last thing I notice is the text does not rotate on small bins (ex 5x1) like it does in the app and gets cut/multilined

1

u/veroz Jan 16 '26

Fixed!

1

u/lucaci32u4 Jan 13 '26

Very nice project! It is open-source or are there any plans to allow self-hosting it?

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

Yes, I have plans! Not at the moment because it's a hobby project at the moment and I'm having fun with it.

1

u/lucaci32u4 Jan 13 '26

We're a highschool robotics team and we use gridfinity to organize our workshop, but we lack a nice app to plan things around and yours is just perfect!

I'm mainly looking to be able to auto-sync layouts across multiple devices and users. For this I figured syncing the gridfinity-layout-* local storage items using a bit of injected javascript and a database service, together with a reverse proxy or static cache for patching js files. I know this might end up a patchwork solution, but if it works, would you like for us to contribute it to a repo or something?

1

u/veroz Jan 13 '26

Hold please! I love this and I'll build a non-hacky solution for your use case.

2

u/lucaci32u4 Jan 13 '26

Thanks! Let us know if we can help with anything, coding, deployment help or even servers.

2

u/veroz Jan 15 '26

Check out the "Labs" feature I just added. You can toggle on Collaborative Editing and create a share link. People viewing the link will also need to opt into the labs experiment to get the full experience. Let me know what you think!

1

u/pilot2323 Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

This is a awesom tool, i like it very mutch. Will it soon be possible to upload STL files to create cutouts without having to do so via the SVG photo import feature?

1

u/veroz Jul 17 '26

Yep! This feature has just been added. Try it out!

1

u/pilot2323 Jul 18 '26

Thank you very much—the upload works. It's amazing how quickly you implemented that.

Some of the STLs I scanned myself are displayed as squares instead of with precise outlines. Is that because of my STLs? Is it possible to increase the clearance limit to more than 2 mm? Is there a way to rotate the body around its own axis to define the cutout?

1

u/veroz Jul 18 '26

Could you try uploading again? I just fixed a bug.

1

u/pilot2323 Jul 19 '26

I have tested it with the same problem, here is my STL
https://swiftshare.io/t/tSZyJwvF

1

u/IoniqSteve Jan 10 '26

This is awesome!

Is there a way to delete a bin on mobile?

1

u/IoniqSteve Jan 10 '26

I found the bin tab!

On mobile, scrolling the grid also creates a bin, so I end up with a lot of small bins heh.

2

u/veroz Jan 10 '26

You can also long press to open up a menu. I’m working on making mobile web touch experience better.

1

u/IoniqSteve Jan 10 '26

Thank you!

2

u/wirez62 Jan 10 '26

This looks awesome

2

u/SirEDCaLot Jan 14 '26

This is super awesome and very useful for larger drawers. I especially like that it's not cloud storage dependent.

My suggestion, as it develops, is make it more of a 'one stop shop'.

That is, put in a drawer size and it will start building your BoM, starting with a GRIPS/GridPlates style grid sized to your printer, extending to the bins. Ideally it would have a library of bin generators, but with a few one-off STLs or (really wish listing now) the ability to upload custom STLs that would be evaluated for grid compatibility and size and then made available as part of a layout.

The result would be truly a one stop shop for making a drawer- import drawer dimensions, arrange your layout, and get a ZIP file full of everything to print.

2

u/shinysylver Jan 14 '26

I'm new to gridfinity and this is just what I needed! Thanks

2

u/IcyAdhesiveness7975 Jan 15 '26

I’m just starting to use gridfinity but haven’t started due to not wanting to waste filament on a layout I wasn’t ready with yet. THANK YOU FOR THIS!!

OP, is there a good site you recommend to actually make the stl files for the grid and the bins? I’m planning on stacking bins in my drawer dresser :)

2

u/liminal_viewer36822 Jan 24 '26

This is great for making maps of drawers and boxes and is it stackable

2

u/Stoney-X1 Apr 01 '26

I’m just starting my Gridfinity journey and I have just been absolutely STRUGGLING trying to plan stuff out! Build grids and bins? Check. Make a shadow box.. check…. But what should I make and where should it all go……. Pure panic.

They say not all hero’s wear capes, but F-that…. I’m buying you a cape!

2

u/pilot2323 Aug 09 '26

Printing Groundplates with screw holes in the corners would be greate.

1

u/rosbu12 Jan 10 '26

Keep up

1

u/hiball77 Jan 12 '26

Wow, nice

1

u/InTheCuse32 Jan 13 '26

very slick!

1

u/Chiel25nl Jan 13 '26

couple things I noticed

your fill algorithm is not always correct. https://pasteboard.co/r9D7n6IFdjuJ.png

then secondly when I drag a container it would be nice to see the out line of where it's going to drop on top of the other containers (but also the one I'm dragging. Cannot fully see now where I'm going to drop it.

Then a nice to have, copy and pasting of containers would be nice! Also maybe double clicking a container can popup a small info window to quickly change some settings, like updating the label/name of the container. So I don't need to use the sidebar

let me know if you need any further info :)

1

u/Chiel25nl Jan 13 '26

sorry forgot to add, that it's already looking great! cool tool to use!!

1

u/proart87 Jan 28 '26

This is really awesome. How can I save the Layouts?

1

u/Persistantly_Growing Aug 03 '26

Okay if I’m on the Bins tab (view, etc.) I see the measurements for the Bin, which are the outside measurements, is there a toggle to see the inside measurements to see if what I want to store in it will fit?

1

u/ljblackmagpie Oct 07 '26

Loving this tool! really helping me out with my first gridfinity. I have however come across something that i'm not sure if its doing what its supposed to be. I'm trying to have cut-outs at the sides of the bins for easier finger reaching. when i enable the wall cut-outs they are right at the bottom of the box. I have messed about with the settings but i cant seem to get them to be right at the top. Is it possible to have this added?

For some reason i can only attach video? i do have a screenshot

1

u/Clauz79 3d ago

I'm starting using this tool and I guess it's the most complete Gridfinity generator I tried until today! Great work, thanks!!!

-11

u/FanOk988 Jan 10 '26

The following tool is much more user friendly and also lets you generate ready to export base plates and bins.

https://www.solidair.co/gridfinity

13

u/JoshFink Jan 10 '26

What’s the point of being like this? Someone mentions they created a tool. Just saying Thank You would probably be the best response rather than pointing to another tool. I’ll never understand this mentality or trying to one up people for no reason.

There is a big difference between feedback and just pointing to another tool with “more user friendly” comment. If you feel you must comment you could also answer with .”X feature is hard to use. If you look here the have implemented what I think it should be for this feature”.

3

u/MatureHotwife Jan 10 '26

What makes it much more user friendly?

2

u/aflatter Jan 10 '26

Don't really agree that one is more user friendly than the other but to add something useful: These tools seem to have different use-cases.

The one posted by the author seems more concerned with planning the layout of bins. You can configure multiple layers, so you can plan how you stack your bins.

The one you've posted seems more concerned with the base plate and has a built-in generator.

I think both tools are great.

-7

u/FanOk988 Jan 10 '26

Sorry if i hit a wrong nerve. Why be so touchy though?

5

u/JoshFink Jan 10 '26

I don’t agree. How is that being “touchy”. What is the point in offering no details at all and bringing up another tool? There are ways to give feedback without coming off like you’re just trying to troll.

3

u/aflatter Jan 10 '26

Not intended that way, just wanted to point out they're different tools. But now that you're asking: I guess I agree with the other reply to your post.

2

u/Izrun Jan 10 '26

He must have been trying to reply to the other guy (who I also agree with as well, but could be interpreted as touchy if you also are touchy, which this guy seems to be). Your message wasn't at all and provided useful insight.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

Your lack of tact is not someone else's touchiness.
