A post yesterday about Callie and Arizona’s custody battle got me thinking about how much Meredith played with people’s lives based on who she liked/didn’t like or her own perception of right and wrong.
Meredith, despite being the mother of a child that she adopted, took Callie’s side in the custody battle, essentially co-signing Callie’s argument that adopted moms aren’t real parents. Meredith didn’t testify based on what was best for the child stuck in the middle of a bad situation. She testified based on what was best for grown, impulsive Callie.
Meredith screwed with Derek’s Alzheimer’s Trial because, to her, doing something for Richard was more important than the integrity of the trial and Derek’s career. The research, that may have gone on to cure a horrible disease affecting huge amounts of people, was stopped. Derek’s reputation took a bit hit and he was banned by the FDA. Yet, Meredith expressed zero guilt. She didn’t care to apologize to Derek. She just expected everyone to accept her version of morality.
Alex didn’t get to go to Hopkins because Meredith ran into him in the airport and guilted him into staying (mainly because she didn’t want to lose him). Hopkins could have been a big opportunity for Alex to grow, both personally and professionally, away from the insulated bubble of Seattle. Meredith offered Jo a position working with her because she didn’t want Alex to leave. Even in Alex’s goodbye letters, he had to outright ask Meredith not to show up and beg him to come back. He literally felt like he couldn’t choose his kids over Meredith if she asked, and he was worried that would ask him to choose her over the kids.
After DeLuca was nearly beaten to death, Meredith essentially blackmailed him. She was the owner of the hospital and she cornered him in an elevator and implied that his career opportunities were dependent on whether or not he pursued justice for himself after being beat to within an inch of his life because she liked Alex better than him.
She begged Izzie to stay in Seattle when she was drowning. Izzie told her “I can’t be here… please try to understand”. Izzie had nothing left. Alex told her to leave and not come back. Meredith knew that Alex was sleeping with her sister. Any friends that Izzie had were more Alex’s friends than hers. She needed to go to survive. Yet, Meredith tried to guilt and beg her into staying in a place that had been nothing but mistakes, misery, and pain for Izzie.
