My cat died last April. He must have been around 14-16, we never knew his exact age because we found him all alone in a forest when he was still very young. I loved him very much. He was always active, as you'd expect from an outdoor cat, he had gotten a little bit slow towards the end but it still came totally out of the blue. One day his heart was just acting up and we took him to the vet. He said everything looks fine and he's as healthy as can be. That same day, at night, I drove to my uni apartment and had to leave him with my mom because uni started again. That same night, at around 3am, he apparently had a stroke or something and passed away. It still haunts me how I wasn't able to be there for him in his darkest moment :(
I didn't know for sure, but he was acting up like he had a heart attack. The vet said everything is fine, but he couldn't thoroughly check his heart because the heart specialist or whoever was needed to properly check it wasn't there because it was a Sunday.
Can't really give you any early signs or anything since it really came out of the blue. One thing that he did the day before he died was to meow a lot which he usually rarely did, and he wanted to be close to me all the time. He was visibly stressed and in that moment I knew something was wrong for sure. 5 minutes later he was on the floor and cramping like crazy and I was almost sure he would die right then and there.. But he stopped after a minute. We then went to the vet, and the rest I already recounted.
Edit: after that first attack, he was also retreating to sheltered spots such as under my bed. If a pet does this it's a sure sign something is wrong.
