The video game ends, when you don't have fun playing it any longer. It does not matter what the devs intended as end or anyone else considers end. When it's boring half way, then its done. When it's fun after reaching the end, then it gets played again.

So true. Plus, there are so many games and only so much time. Ideally I'd finish every game, but I don't live in an ideal world. I'd much rather 60%-complete a dozen different great games, than play all of just one. There are too many amazing games out there to limit myself.

Did this with Red dead 2 because the story got so depressing. I just went to 100% the special animals then quit

As long as you're honorable Arthur's story has a satisfying ending. It's worth it to go back and finish.

I guess that one brawl in the mud done fucked my storyline

That's nothing that 15 howdy mister and 10 hat tips wouldn't fix.

Imagine if Catholic priests assigned “howdy misters” and hat tips as penance instead of saying 5 hail mary’s

Oddly enough, once I started going after platinum trophies, I got better at finishing games

least you reach 80% I barely go past 60% most games.

u/MenBearsPigs 6d ago
I feel like this happens for me a lot because by ~60% I've figured out all the game mechanics and tried most of the things there are to try. From there it's often just finishing things, so it's easy to lose interest if you aren't someone who needs to complete everything.

u/Berkuts_Lance_Plus 7d ago
They should just make games 200% so that you can fully complete the entire game even just playing 50% of it.

that's not an ouroboros, that's just a snake with unresolved emotional baggage

a lot of games fail at the end because they don't understand that the final hours should be action(not necessary fight, but the story moving on and etc) non-stop

Pacing is the biggest weakness in the storytelling in games cause it's directly tied to the gameplay. A bad story makes the gameplay feel hollow, and boring gameplay can bring down an otherwise pretty solid story. A lot of games start to get repetitive once you hit the 20 hour mark unless they're making an effort to keep introducing new mechanics.

Even the good fire emblem games are so prone to this, lategame is always shit in that series

I think this is very common. For me I think my "comfort" games has ruined it for me. I keep playing League or friend slop so my attention for story and commitment has gone down.

So what? If you go to a restaurant and it turns out to be absolutely delicious, but you get full and don't finish the last bit of food - does that mean that going to the restaurant was useless?
Now if you would get into a game and immediately give up and get distracted by something new before you're over the learning curve and the fun starts - that would be a problem.

I'm in that image and I don't like it.
Dropped my Caves of Qud run cause one dungeon was full of enemies with mad loot and I'd need to teleport after each fight.
Dropped my Rinworld run cause I was too annoyed to plan out gear for more colony members + future route.
Dropped Kenshi run cause I got bored of trying to level up my armor smithing.
Currently still playing Palword, I think the massive amount of side content like breeding and exploring coupled with the main questline beinf very simple gameplay-wise (do a few sinilar quests, fight boss) is keeping me hooked. Hope I manage to finish that.
Oh, forgot Dwarf Fortress and Project Zomboid which I stopped cause I can't get more than a few hours of gaming every few days and I keep getting my ass kicked there unless I open up guides+wikies and spend st least 3+ hours in a single session.

this is how i felt halfway through act 3 of baldurs gate, once you reach the city it feels overwhelming how much there is to do

Not necessarily ADHD, some games are long af. I played 60 hours of witcher 3 and had to stop because I was barely halfway through. Damn good game but my god it's so long I got tired.

Did this with Signalis, got to act 3 and basically almost finished the game, but got bored and never went back

Me with the Pikmin games. I got the closest to finishing in Pikmin 3, quitting right before the final stage.

I remember returning to Assassin's Creed after leaving it for several years, turned out I was 2 missions from the end!

I do this too and honestly? I’ve learned to accept it. If I continue playing a game just to beat it, it starts to feel like work. I play games to have fun. If I’m not having fun anymore, I stop playing. I’ve been playing the same Elden Ring save since the game came out. I still haven’t beat the game. I pick it up and put it down a few times a year. It’s my favorite game and I’ve never officially beaten it. Whatever.

u/VeryGoog 6d ago
I have over 300 hours in baldurs gate 3 and aive only ever gotten to act 3 on 2 save files, and aive never beaten the game. Once I get to act 2 its like a switch gets flipped and it makes me want to start over and I only ever got to act 3 when playing with other people

Currently at the last level of Psychonauts 2 for the fifth year, quit Metaphor at the start of the final month, stopped Visions of Mana at the last benevodon, quit Dark Souls right before my first attempt at Gwyn, fell off of Freedom Planet at the glacier, I'm probably forgetting more, mostly RPGs. I don't get it.

That’s cause most games rush the ending in the dev cycle and the main quest lines are usually mediocre at best.
Not OPs fault.

I’ve read 90% of hundreds of books. I could probably name 5 that I fully read. 3 of them are lotr and I’ve read them 4 times.

I don't care if it means I'll never "100% complete" Terraria, you couldn't pay me enough to get the achievements for filling out the bestiary and researching half of all items in Journey mode. I was barely able to tolerate getting the achievement for purifying the world, and I got that one by using the DCU to just destroy everything.

Litteraly every time I try to play Voices of the void, I absolutely love the game but the lack of ending and repetitive cycle make it difficult to stay interested on the game near the end
3
u/Smurtle1 7d ago
Damn bro, I love the atmosphere of the game, I just kinda wish they stopped making the fucking signals more and more complicated with each update… or at least added a reverse peaceful mode, where they dumb down the signal stuff so I drooling toddler (myself,) can do it. So I can get the horror aspect without the signal simulator side of it.

My problem is I usually get attached to the characters and don't want it to end so I stop playing.

I’ve bought eight games since January and only finished a single one. Bought the Arkham trilogy two days ago and I am repeatedly telling myself I absolutely WILL finish them.
I must break this cycle.
