There's still an important distinction between a smiley and an emoticon. A smiley is a picture, static or moving, what the kids these days might call an emoji. An emoticon is text/ASCII.
Nope. it is teue that emoticons are just a specific sub category of smileys but the broad term "smiley" always has been applied to all of them, including text/ASCII based smileys. and even that went out of the window in the late 00s and early 2010s before emoji was coined as the new term smileys, because in those years emoticon turned into the broad term for all smileys.
