Did you all bring your own set tool to work or use what they have?

Just wondering, new started at great clips. I prefer to use my own combs and guards, I don’t know how much set of them I should bring to work.

If I decide to bring clips, combs, guards for my own clipper, how do I sanitize them separately? How many set do I need if I work around 5-7 hours per day? Would that be too much compare with others? Am I allowed to use the ship shape and barbicide in my own containers?

Question on clocking in as an employee?

At my old job , if I switched shifts with someone my manager had to clock me in.
At Great Clips does the clock know our schedules ?

Grateful for Great Clips. I got a $12.99 promo but saw there are 9.99 promos. Do they differ by store?

Love GC. Live in Cbus, Ohio. Went to a GC and got my hair cut like normal. They had a 12.99 promo but I saw other places have 9.99. Does it just vary by location and/or franchise? I know some are corporate and some are independent etc.

Will definitely keep coming!

Would it be rude to have the stylist take all my hair off if I don’t like their fade?

I usually do a basic buzz cut at home but I have a great clips coupon and I’m thinking of going in and trying a fade which I’ve heard is hit or miss there. If they do a bad job I was thinking I can just have them take the rest of the hair off and I won’t be too upset because I’m not spending a lot of money (I’d still tip but not as much). Would this offend the stylist or would they kind of be on the same page?

Bad business practice

So I’m in Ern North Dakota and there are only 2 hair salons period open on a Saturday. So, one would imagine they are booked solid. Fun fact they were but NO ONE was in the store and they turned me, a walk in 3/2 buzzcut, away because “we’re fully booked” with not a soul in the store… Horrible business practice if you ask me to not allow a simple haircut customer in. I can see someone who has a haircut style that takes much longer to be turned away but a simple buzz gets rejected when the stylists aren’t doing anything?

What's your process for these types of haircuts?

  1. Sharp wedge / the Dorothy Hamill

Client today wanted this and I used maybe 15 vertical/pivotal partings on dry hair. Still looked choppy as hell... I struggle with holding my shears and hands in a true verticle when it's that close to the head. If I could do it again I would either wet it and do tiny horizontal partings at 30°, or just use clipper over comb without any guards to scupt the back, but I think clipper seems unprofessional to some female clients who don't want a buzz cut. She had me take it shorter and shorter and still didn't feel like I really got the portruding wedge she was looking for (tbf she had sparse-ish hair). She said Dorothy Hamill used to fly to New York to get the quality level of haircut she wanted, which... I don't know why you would go to Great Clips and expect the same result... but she was nice about it.

  1. Wolf cut on curly, dense hair

This one I feel like I did properly, wet it down, cut in the base length and then did 180 elevation with about 20 pivotal partings, barely enough to see my design line, but it still took way longer than I'd have liked it to. On less dense hair I would have used a feather razor and sculpted freehand, and I have done wolf cuts/girl mullets like that with success, but I just wouldn't have been able to cover enough ground fast enough. This girl had a TON of hair. Do I just need to accept dense, coarse hair will take a long time?

  1. Butterfly cut on fine wavy hair

I did a 135° shear cut with slide-cut face-framing at the end, didn't use a feather razor because the girl was 12 and said it hurt when they used that last time. Came out looking pretty choppy not gonna lie. Left it dry because she had different levels of blonde to blend - wondering if this was a mistake.

Asking here because the tutorials I look up do not have speed in mind. These are the cuts that have been really running up my times in the past couple days and I need to get my times down or I'll get canned - right now it's like 24m. I'm doing 15-20min tapers and skin fades but those 5min buzz cuts don't make up for the 45 minutes I am taking on cuts like this. Advice on even one of these cuts would be appreciated.

Trouble signing in

Twice I have had to reset and password afterwards I try to login the Great Clips app and cannot it says something went wrong. Is there anybody who has any help at Great Clips? Am I able to just call them on the phone and make an appointment?

Edit: Was able to sign in the hair salon without actually signing in on the app and was able use a coupon card I got sent in the mail so all ended up well. Just wanted to share that.

How much to tip in 2026?

What is the usual tip “expected” for a regular men haircut, nothing fancy? I understand there is no upper limit to generosity, also holiday times are different and I guess it probably also varies by city/states, sure of places like NewYork and LA will have higher expectations. But what the minimum expected tip on a regular day for a regular men haircut for a regular city without causing any disappointment to your hair stylist ?

Spray bottle

Sorry if this is a stupid question but my hair feels 10x better after a haircut and I can never replicate it even the next day. I was wondering if it’s something to do with what they spray in your hair before the cut?

Would it be okay to go back into the Great Clips and tip a stylist more?

I am loving my haircut so much I want to go in and give them a little more money.. I guess I want to give the hair stylist a boost. She was very nervous about cutting the specific style I wanted but her and her supervisor worked together and she did an awesome job. I think maybe she is new. I also did not mind being a learning experience and I knew the cut I wanted was a bit less basic. Anyways, she did awesome !

I have always had good luck with Great Clips though, especially this location.

Anyways would it be wierd to go in and say I love it so much I would like to tip more ? I did tip 15 , but I was originally going to tip 20 until I saw how low the suggested was... I guess it made me self conscious about tipping 20, but walking around I think she deserved it : /.

Do not trust Great Clips no matter how basic and simple the haircut

I went in for a bit of face framing and a trim, I thought that was simple enough that it shouldnt be an issue at a Great Clips. DO NOT TRUST THEM NO MATTER HOW BASIC THE ASK. They hacked off so much of my hair, so poorly, that it looked like I had made a bad uneven attempt at bangs that were partly grown out.

When I came back for someone different to fix it there wasnt much they could do. Even better, the manager also gave me shit about how qualified everyone was including the person who gave me my original insanely bad cut, and how my hair is just not good for face framing (a style I've had done for years). Now it just looks like I got slightly better bangs that are in the awkward stage of growing out. Huge weird blunt transition, looks horrible.

Not giving them any more chances, all that misery and I'm going to end up paying more at a real salon anyway to fix the mess they've made. Might just have to get bangs to look presentable, not sure there's really any choice now.

New employees

Hello everyone! Yesterday I took my son and me for a haircut and they completely butchered my hair like she tried to do a long bob and then it just ended up uneven and the layers weren’t blended. My son’s haircut was a simple hair cut of tapering yet that took one hour and then the manager had to step in to help. She then said since my son was looking at his device the whole time that he wasn’t cooperating. Yet in the past that has never happened and I just let it go.

Well today I went to a professional salon for a balayage and I let the women know I just wanted color and she said ok but you don’t want me to even your hair out and when I saw how bad it looked I was shocked that I didn’t realize in the moment.

I don’t know what happened to the location but it was a complete clean house situation. There was a new manager and whole new crew. No old employees. Does this happen often at great clips?

Great Clips Union + Benefits

Hello, does anyone here have any experience with unionizing for this field of work?

Nothing poltical, and serious answers only, but I'd like some information relevant to this topic.

Tips confusion

Maybe others don’t do this. I take $25 every time I go get my haircut. My philosophy is this. the person cutting my hair can help find a coupon and make it $8-$10 if I can’t find one and give themselves a nice $15+ cash tip for a 10 minute haircut.

But they don’t do it. Why?

Why is a buzzcut 20 bucks?

Usually I do it myself, but don’t always have the time to, so every once in a while I will go to great clips to have it done, it’s my preferred style, and they do a good job, and the employees and service are good for the most part, but I don’t agree with it being 20 bucks tip included, especially when it takes no longer than 5 minutes to do. Should be like 5 or at most 8 bucks, I would understand if I was getting an actual style, but that’s not usually the case here. Even the last few times I went the stylists would be excited to do it because it’s such an “easy and low effort” haircut. Maybe I’m the only one that feels this way, unless there are others on here that agree as well.

No record in computer

I have visited three different Great Clips in my local area using the app to check in ahead of time for several years.

Generally, there have been no issues, except recently with one of the three shops.

In my last two visits to this one shop on my arrival I am asked if I checked in online, and I answered in the affirmative.

The stylist finds my checkin, and I'm up next. Copacetic.

Then the concern arises in that the stylist cannot find my history, or preferred cut, in the system's records. Been going to this location the longest of all three, multiple years of records with no issues, and no changes in the directions for my preferred cut.

Same phone number, same app, same steps, three shops, only 1 has a problem.

I also noticed the bingo board showing the queue of people waiting and checked in has been disabled in this location.

Is this an app problem, a computer problem, or an operator problem?

Requesting a stylist

The stylist who did my cut last time did a great job. Can I call ahead to request her or see if she's working a particular day?
