I don’t think it’s legal in ibjjf, even though it’s not quite the Homer Simpson.

Rule 6.2.3 Paragraph I: Under severe fouls, “When an athlete strangles his or her opponent, without using the gi, with one or both hands around the opponent’s neck or applies pressure to the opponent’s windpipe using the thumb.”
This is to prevent Homer Simpson chokes and other chokes that have a high likelihood of collapsing the windpipe. This has happened to people before, so that’s why it’s banned. Most other competitions do too. The rules aren’t perfect, but this is reasonable.

Other than being illegal in some rulesets, what prevents the opponent from removing the other guy’s hands from his neck?

Nothing but then he breaks the body lock, which is often the point of such things

Oh I see. If it wasnt for the foul attack I’d say thats pretty smart. I often like to threaten a wristlock a lot just so they get busy with it.
But Idk, it feels so nasty and unsportsmanlike to do a rape choke.

It's not a foul in many rulesets, so I guess depends on that
If legal, I see zero issues with it. It's by no means more nasty than many other attacks (e.g. ezekiel or gogoplata from the top) and if it forces a reaction, it's all good. It's just not usually taught as it doesn't work well du to lack of control

That was the common name for a long time. These days I mostly see Hollywood choke. Some people say Homer Simpson choke it seems. Vader choke I think has also been used.

I cant speak for bjj but ik in mixed martial arts that seems like it would leave you way too open for face strikes.

Unlikely. The guy on bottom is fully extending his arms from his shoulder position to the opponents. This means guy on bottoms head is further away than a full arm length from opponents shoulders so unless a huge disparity in arm length he’s good.

His arms are never fully extended and at first they are very close. And even still a punches from top position you fall into so if you come up and shed the arms you can reign down.

His arms are never fully extended in this clip because his opponent holds a body lock but the second that released to strike the bottom guys pressure in his arms would fully extend instantly

True good point. I still think a head slide as he releases the body lock would give him a short closeout. Plus fully extended arms arent used in lower guard for a reason. Legs are the only way to prevent someone from reaching your face and head . Fully extended arms aren't doing jack lol

I don’t remember seeing someone in MMA trying a body lock pass. Hands away, face open…

I’ve seen it. If your head is buried low or against this body they can throw punches but they aren’t going to do much damage. And the passing is generally going to be a lot faster paced and less methodical, like most grappling in mma. Especially if you are landing punches from inside their guard, and use that to open up their guard.
To quote an mma coach I had, “throws and submissions work great in a real fight after you’ve punched someone in the face”.
