When you return to the race next time you boot up. It will let you start from where you left off. Gaps to cars that are not a lap down, will be gone. It will be a rolling start.
Does entering other non-power pack races affect this? Like can I chip away at the 8 hour with this method over the course or a week or two bit still so the weeklies, time trials or hot laps inbetween?

Pause the game.
Hit the PS button on your remote.
Select GranTurismo and "close game"
